I'm a new user to SSL, love the program, addicted to it... but haven't been able to do a job on any of my computers with out a freeze up. I have built all my overviews, deleted all the currupt files, and my computers are all G4 desktops running panther with more then sufficent requirments to run SSL. It seems like everytime I have a freeze up it is a different track, and it's never at the same time of day. The Computers are completely dedicated to Itunes and SSL, and never use them for online stuff. It could work fine for 15 min. maybe 2 hours but it has become obvious that sooner or later there will be a freeze up of some sort. My Oldest G4 will have a dialog box that comes up and says i must restart my computer... where my newest G4 will freeze up sometimes I can still move the mouse but not click on anything, and other times it won't allow me to move the mouse at all. I suspected maybe currpt files might be to blame but it freezes up sometimes even on freshly imported tracks from a CD, and I thought that the Build Overviews feature was supposed to weed out all the currupt files. Any clue what I should do any advice would be much appreciated.

1.Are you using an external usb hub to plug either your SL1 or a external hard drive to?
2.Are you using an external HD and if so, what is it formated to?
3.What version of SSL are you running?

I am running 1.6.1, and I am not using an external usb hub, and I am not using an external hard drive, I have exact librarys of about 7500 songs on each computer on the original internal hard drives

How much hard drive space do you have left?

On the newest one I have 25.75GB out of 80, and on the old one I have 3.94GB out of 60GB

the new one also has an additional 180GB with 164 GB left, the old one has 2 additional internal drives with 10GB each

What is your USB audio buffer set to?
If its set to low it may be choking your computer.

it is set to 10 i haven't changed it since the install because I was unsure what it would do

Although this might be your issue with the older Mac, I don't think it would be with the newer one?

I see you have 4 different computers.
Do you have SSL running on either of your PCs?
I would just like to rule out the corrupt file issue by using the same library on different computers.

That definately sounds like the the problem with the older mac, i will change the buffer on that one and test this afternoon, as far as my newer G4 I am still lost. Unfortunately my PCs are far too dated and I don't believe they meet the requirements for running SSL, I use them mainly for office work and web surffing because they are old and cheap, i'm affraid putting any kind of library on them may cripple them they tend to crash speraticly already.

Yes, building the overviews should find them. Just so we're clear, when the builder crashed after it came across a corrupt file, did you delete it from your library or re-encode it before playing it again?

yeah when i restarted the program after each crash i deleted all the currupt files that were listed with the little broken CD icon on the left

Will the computer freeze right away or does it take awhile for the first freeze to happen?
Also, just to make sure, can you open SSL and go to the setup screen, look in the bottom right hand corner and check what version you are using?
Often times people download a newer version but don't realize they are still opening up the older one.

Hey sorry it took so long my town had a power outage... it is running 1.6.1 I just checked and it dosn't freeze right away some times it will be fine for 15 to 20 minutes before I get a freeze up and sometime it could be an hour or two and then it will freeze up.

yeah it has a couple of times, but most of the time it dosn't. I believe I happened to of saved one of the messages, I am at work right now and will send when I get out 2:30ish EST

I had the screen Freeze up on my the other night.....but it was still tracking the loaded tracks in the background but it never came back!! using 1.6.1, I was able to switch over and load a CD in the CDJ1000's and kill the app and start over again, I gave it like 3 mins but I had to move on ppl were getting sick of that song

in this whole process I have been running the program as much as possible to see if I can pinpoint the problem, I finally got it to freeze up on the same song twice so I deleted that track and restarted and ran the program some more, and of course it froze up again, but this time just the program froze up, I can still move my mouse and do anything else I want to on the computer, actually I can even click on the buttons on SSL it says that the play button is on because it is red, but the overviews will not move they are froze and the virtual decks are froze as well and will not move, I can still file search and even drop new tracks on to be played but they won't play they just cue up to the beginning and sit there as if they are stoped or on pause... Frozen... i don't know if this helps but I though it was interesting and would relay it just in case... anything to get this working, I want to switch my whole company over to SSl if I can get it to run smoothly..

PS. When I went to close SSL when the program up it ended up freezing up the whole computer and had to shut down the computer manually

I see that you are running version 1.4 - I think the first step is to upgrade to 1.6.1
We have much better reporting in 1.6.1, so if the problem persists, and you are able to get 1.6.1 to crash, send us the crash log (as you have done here) and we'll be able to narrow it down.

I am running 1.6.1 and have been, I guess the error report must have been from before I upgraded, if that's the case i'm sorry didn't realize.... but it is still freezing up under 1.6.1

I haven't gotten any report messages under 1.6.1, checking back and looking now the two that I saved were from before the upgrade, i get just freeze ups now... no messages

yes i am in fact using 1.6.1 and have been I checked when you asked before and I just did again... I didn't realize that the crash reports I had recived before were before the upgrade, so please disregaurd that crash report, I upgraded about 2 weeks ago and have not recived any crash reports since... now when the program freezes up it it allows me to click and move my mouse, and do anything I want on my computer but the decks are frozen and won't play, won't move, even though the play button is in the play position... then when I go to exit SSL it completely freezes my computer and I am forced to manually restart... but no error reports, and I am DEFINATELY running 1.6.1 sorry for the confusion. JME

I just had another freeze up this time the whole screen froze mouse and all.. had to restart manually... I am also keeping track of all of the crashes and compiling a list everytime it crashes and of what songs, I am then removing the songs from the library just in case... but that whole process could take weeks to play through 18.9 days worth of music with all the freeze ups, and restarts

If you ran your overviews like you said, that should have picked up on all your corrupt files?
Have you added any new tracks to your library that need to have their overviews built?
It does sound like a corrupt file issue.

Are you using crates?
If so try deleting the 'databasev2' file from your ScratchLive folder in your music folder.
After you've deleted it open up SSL again to build that 'databaseV2' file again and see if your still having the problem.

I had another freeze up last night and this time I had a grey box with multi language messages that told me to restart my computer

What you experienced was a kernel panic.

Search in your spot light for a Scratchlive crash log and/or an OSX crash log and post it.
This could be the cause of installing bad RAM?

i couldn't find an OSX crash log

I suggest repairing your OSX permissions using the Mac Disk Utility application found in your Utility folder. Then try to reproduce the crash.

ok I did the repair permissions on the original 80GB MAC Drive, what exactly dose that do? It seems to be working so far... but I will let this run overnight tonight and see what happens, and report back in the morning. Thank you ahead of time if this indeed works you are my hero!

ok, I left SSL going last night and checked it periodically, it didn't freeze up as often, but every couple of hours it still freezes and comes up with that grey multi language box that says to restart, a kernel panic as you put it. Any ideas, i also checked my ram the computer recognizes all 3 chips that I have that add up to 1GB, so no dead ram chips either.

I just re-located my itunes library and consolidated it. I was building overviews for 80 GB of music and the prgrm closed unexpectedly. In 2 months, the only other time it crashed (the prgrm only) was re-scanning id3 tags and playing (@home). During that process too, the virtual deck is completely innaccurate. It's not something I practice regularly, especially since it caused a problem.

Ok did the Pram thing and it crashed again, this time no grey box screen froze but froze so the mouse was over a button so I could click and unclick the button but that was is it I couldn't move the mouse, and everything on the screen was frozen.
