Hi
I am having severe USB DROPOUTS, this is a problem that I have never experienced before in my 3yrs use of Serato Scratch
My System Specs are
Hardware: Dell INSPIRON 2.80GHZ Pentium (HyperThreaded)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition (Service Pack 2)
Ran Scratch LIVE During Test: Yes
Minimum Safe Scratch LIVE Buffer Size: 5ms
512 Mb of RAM
Since this problem has started occuring I have formatted my machine & reinstalled windows( silly me I thought this might help) but I have had no joy.
I have also installed Serato Scratch on 2 other machines; 1 laptop & 1 PC, both which aremore powerfull the my current laptop & I am still having these issues. I also have a spare USB cable which I have used but to no avail. I am now conviced that it is my Scratch Amp which is the problem !!
I have used the RATT tool, though I cant make any sense out of it.
PLEASE HELP !!

Hello PhatBlankz,
1.Have you disabled any bluetooth, spyware, or wireless internet?
2.Have you installed any windows updates or other updates or programs lately?
3.Have you tried to roll back your system to a time where you knew SSL was working properly?
It sounds like you have a driver on your system that is eating up your juice. We need to find it and hopefully update it or trash it.
The RATT tool is for the Serato developers to make sense of. All they ask is that you send it to them.

Hi PhatBlankZ,
Can you please rerun the RATT tool, and run it for just a few minutes - make sure you clear out your old logs first. Let us know if you got a drop out in the time that you ran it.
Are you using any other USB devices?
Thanks
Sam

From the RATT report, It looks like there are a lot of problem drivers on your computer.
Carl or someone at Serato, can you explain to Phatblankz how to update these drivers?

Your RATT logs are crazy:-
A few things you can try,
Disconnect any network cables disable any wireless interfaces.
Disable any firewire interfaces you aren't using.
Uninstall any custom keyboard or mouse drivers.

PhatBlankz, if you go to the Dell Support Website (support.ap.dell.com) and enter your Dell system's service tag, you'll see any drivers that are available for download. (Don't bother with display drivers and except for the chipset drivers, only download and install drivers for devices that you have)
nobspangles' suggestions are really good too. What your RATT reports are saying is that there is something on your computer is causing your USB driver to respond really slowly.
You could also have a look at this thread - Marqs was able to improve his USB dropout situation quite a bit (scratchlive.net)
Do let me know how it goes.

Hi Guys
Okay this is what i have tried so far
------------------------
Disconnected any network cables disabled any wireless interfaces.
Disabled any firewire interfaces you aren't using.
Uninstalled any custom keyboard or mouse drivers.
Went to Dell website & downloaded drivers & installed drivers
------------------------------------
Still having insane USB dropouts after doing the above - i will try Marqs solution & get back to you.
Just 1 question: Can you not tell from the RATT tool log which device specificlly is causing my USB Driver to respon slowly ?
Thanks to all for the support so far !

Thanks to all for the support so far !
The RATT tool only gives us response times without the sequence in which they're taking place, so only using it, its not possible to narrow it down to one device when there are more than one devices that seem to be taking long.
You're welcome :)

Howdi Serato Team
So i spent my weekend still trying to sort my Serato scratch, with very little joy. I tried MarqS it did not work...I then re-formatted my machine, did a clean installation of Windows XP SP2 & loaded Serato Scratch. At this stage serato scratch was the only program loaded on my machine so i wasnt worried about system resources being wasted on other APPS. So i loaded my Serato scratch & started mixing, 30 secs into my mix dropouts started occuring. It was so bad that i pretty much had to stop straight away....
I am now convinced that i have a hardware problem with my Laptop because i installed Serato Scratch on my Desktop PC & it worked like a wet dream...
Now the question is, which hardware device is not working 100%
After a frustrating weekend

After you did a clean install did you go to windows update and update all your drivers?
Keep in mind that when you do this, you will need to go back to the website and check for update quite a few times before you get them all.
Go to windows update, search for updates, download, restart your computer after download, go back to windows update and run through the process again and again until it says that there are no more updates.
If you've done this and are still having issues try updating your drivers using www.driveragent.com.
This seemed to have worked for some.

Carl,
Just wondering if you knew which drivers to pick from the list from the Dell site, I've only downloaded the chipset drivers...
Thanks,
Ollie

You don't need to pay the membership fee if you don't mind doing some research.
It will tell you what drivers could use an update. Just run a search and find the manufacturer of the driver and download it directly from their sight.

ZachS - i have run windows update several times now & i am convinced i have my Latop up to date but i am still getting USB dropouts, i then went to Driveragent ran the scan then after refusing to pay for the membership did some legwork & managed to get hold of all the drivers DRIVERAGENT suggested & installed them. Still getting the USB DROPOUTS after all this....
So lastnight i uninstalled version 1.6 on my LAPTOP & went back to version 1.4 & mixed for 1hour without a dropout - WTF ? whats going on ?
I am now planning to do a longer mix tonight to test again.
Out of curiousity i uninstalled version 1.6 on my PC DESKTOP & went back to version 1.4 - it appeared to me as if 1.4 was running alot smoother than 1.6.
Ive been fighting with this for 11days now & truelly am at my wits end - i am hoping & preying that tonight version 1.4 runs smoothly & without any dropouts - if it doesnt what do i try next ??
Cheers
PhatB
PS: if i had a external power supply for my scratch amp would this not take some of the load off my USB Ports ?
But then again i have been running it without a exteranl power supply for the last 2 years & its worked 100%....

How low can you get your usb audio buffer?
From looking at your RATT report your USB port is causing the biggest problem.
You may want to get a pcmcia card and make sure you get one that has up-to-date drivers.
This will bypass the usb port your using now and hopefully make your computer run smoothly.
What version of SSL were you using when everything was running good?
Another thing that could be going on is that you need to clean out the fan of your computer. This would definitely cause usb drop outs.
Try getting some compressed air and spraying it into your computer to try and loosen up any dust that might have settled in your system.

So ive spent this weekend testing Version 1.4 & in the 5 - 8 hours i have mixed i think i experianced all of 3 dropouts. These dropouts were caused because i had my USB buffer set very low, i now have it set on 8ms & i havent experianced any dropouts. I am still not 100% convinced yet & need put in a couple more hours of testing.
: i will run the ratt tool & reload the txt file !
ZACH S to answer your question i was running version 1.4 before i formatted my machine, i then installed version 1.6 after reinstallation. But the issues did start when i was running 1.4 otherwise i never would of formatted my machine.
Can someone please answe this question for me:
IF I HAD A EXTERNAL POWER SUPPLY FOR MY SCRATCH AMP WOULD THIS NOT TAKE SOME OF THE LOAD OFF MY USB PORT ?

No.
BTW with [ b ] and [ / b ] you can emphasize without using UPPERCASE.
[ b ] example [ / b ] (with the spaces in the brackets) will be displayed as

So after almost 2 weeks it finally seems like i have a stable system. I am running Serato version 1.4 & its a hell of a lot more stable than version 1.6 - for me anyway. I re-installed version 1.6 lastnight & the dropouts came back so i uninstalled & went back to version 1.4 - no dropouts - USB Buffer set to 8ms.
i wonder what would happen if i tried version 1.5 ?? hmm something to try tonight...
Anyway THANKS go out to all Serato Staff ( Zach S & Carl M ) for all the support given & to anyone else who has helped.
I have a 8hr marathon set @ a club this Friday - i am hoping it all goes well. to say i am a bit nervous is a under statement. i hope my system plays nice & its works out sweet ^_^
