Was everything working properly until recently or is this your first attempt at playing video files?

This is the first time I installed the video-SL plugin. I tried installing it many times, I also removed my quicktime version to install the one that come with your setup.
I use the latest serato version, and the latest version of the plugin. I tried many video formats (mov, avi, wmv), but nothing shows up, neither on the output window, nor in the video panel.
PS: I have the "quicktime alternative" codecs installed on my PC, should I remove them?

It's definitely worth a shot. If it's easy to do, give it a go and let me know the results.
Are you using the SL1, SL3 or the TTM 57SL hardware interface?

I'm using ScratchLive 1.9.1 with the SL1 on Win Vista SP1 32bits.
I tried removing quicktime alternative, then quicktime, then videoSL, clean up the registries with CCleaner, then reinstalling videoSL again, but no changes... ScratchLive don't even display a single frame from any video :(
It's strange since I've never had any problem with any video player/editor ...

When you open SSL, do the video SL preview decks display properly?
See attached pic :)

When I start SSL, I have to click on the "video" button to display these preview decks, but when I load a video in one of the two decks, no videos are shown in this panel, it's always black.

Are both video channel faders in the up position?
Is the corssfader in the middle?

I haven't touched anything in the video panel and I tried the left deck.
I launch SSL, I click the "video" button, then I click "demo" (I planned to purchase but I want the demo to work before). The 'output window' shows up, displaying the "demo mode" logo, Every display widget is black, as expected (no video).
Then I drag any video, wmv.avi, or mov, noticing that many audio/video codecs are unspported, and when I finally find one with no codecs problems, it displays no video (neither in the panel nor in the output window), and plays no sound, the time on the deck scrolls, but not the white arrow on the vertical display. With a wav or a mp3 it works as usal.
notice : I had one single .mov file (a short movie I made, encoded in 2001) on wich I could use the sound track, but still, no video at all.
I tried then the right deck, the turntable signal was ok in the setup (lefts turntable too), I moved the crossfader to the right in the video panel, and still, no video display.
I begin to think I won't get this to work :(
I got just a last information for you: I'm using a dual-screen display, could it be the cause of the plugin problem?

Ok, I just tried with these videos: No video, no sound, nothing displayed in the vertical scroll (no video frames, no waveform). The time display is correct, and the white arrow in the vertical display scrolls in the void.

This sounds like a video card issue.
Please go to laptopvideo2go.com and locate the correct driver for your OS and video card.
Once installed give it a go and let us know your findings;)

Your video card may be up to date when going to the manufacturer of your computer's website but we often need to have VSL users download and install a third party driver for their card to get the card to run at full speed so to speak.
Please download and install the correct driver by going to the link above and post your findings.

Hm.. good question.. I would assume so.
Try finding your graphics card on the site. If its listed then download and install it.

I updated my driver to the lastest version, but I won't install any 3rd party drivers, I had a lot of problems with them in the past so I'm a bit supersticious.
And still, I don't think that it could be a video card problem, cause VSL can't even get me the sound track of any video. I tried on many many format (avi, wmv, mov, vsl, divx, rm...) and I had sound on only a single video, wich was encoded by myself, with a very bad compression (quicktime format, more than 400mb for 7mn video). And for this video too, I did not get a single frame of the video in serato...
Maybe am I doing something wrong? I open serato, activate the video plugin in demo mode, browse trough the "files" panel to find a video, grab it to one deck, tap play on my turntable with the SSL record, everything is fine in the setup graph display, and then... nothing :(
ps: I used serato last night with only audio files, and it runs like a charm even after several hours of hardcore scratching and beatjuggling ! I love this software BTW :D

Use the MovieInfoBatch program and copy the results for a few video files to this thread. This will give us a better idea about what's going on. It will tell us how the videos were encoded, what was used to encode the videos, what audio the video were encoded with and what your computer uses to playback the audio.

These tracks are all over the place.
Please drag/drop one of the demo content videos the Serato team posted into Movie Batch Info and post the findings.
We need to see what your computer is using to decode your files.
Usually we would see something regarding Quicktime in these printouts.
Yours says nothing about Quicktime which leads me to believe you don't have it installed.
Please install the latest version of Quicktime and test again.

I'm afraid the last thing I can suggest is to update your drivers from --> forums.laptopvideo2go.com
If it makes you feel any better I have not heard of these drivers mess anything up.
It has only fixed a ton of problems with Nvidia cards and VSL.
Also.. if there is a problem solving it is as simple as deleting the driver in your Device Manager and reinstalling the newest driver from Nvidia's site.
Click on the link above, click on your operating system, make sure your video card is listed in the list provided, and download/install the driver.
Let us know your findings.

Ok, I just installed the drivers for my video card from the link you gave me, and VSL still behaves the same way (ScratchVideoPlugin.exe crashes as soon as I drop a video, I'm not even playing it)......
So what should I do now? Just give up? :(
At least I can feel lucky, this was the demo of the plugin, cause I almost purchased it...
(I have to add one more thing: I got a friend that tried VSL with the TTM57, and he also had a lot of problems, he was only able to play mpg files at a very slow framerate; I don't want to offend anyone, but it seems this plugin is still pretty unstable, at least on windows computers...)
Now I'm just hoping that a next release will solve the problem, but if you have other ideas of things I should test, I'll be glad to give you my feedback!

So what should I do now? Just give up? :(
What version of Quicktime do you currently have installed? I ask because we're getting reports that any of the 7.6 versions of Quicktime cause VSL to crash after playing a video file.
We're definitely working on PC compatibility improvements :)

Ok, I just installed the drivers for my video card from the link you gave me, and VSL still behaves the same way (ScratchVideoPlugin.exe crashes as soon as I drop a video, I'm not even playing it)......So what should I do now? Just give up? :(

(I have to add one more thing: I got a friend that tried VSL with the TTM57, and he also had a lot of problems, he was only able to play mpg files at a very slow framerate; I don't want to offend anyone, but it seems this plugin is still pretty unstable, at least on windows computers...)We're definitely working on PC compatibility improvements :)

I'm not at home yet, but I'm pretty sure I'm using quicktime 7.6.4, since I downloaded the latest version @ Apple about 2 weeks ago. If it's not the 7.6.4 version, at least it's a 7.6.x.
Have you got a link of a quicktime version that should work with VSL ?

it still does not work at all.... When a drop a video on a deck, nothing appears, neither the video, nor the audio...

no, nothing loads, I got an empty display, and when I play, depending on the files I play, 2 different things happen:
- either the cursor does not move at all (I mean that when I presse play nothing happens),
- either the cursor scrolls in the void (the mark on the circle rotates, the white arrow scrolls down vertically on the central display, but no spectrum is displayed)...
Hope it helps! Sorry for my english btw ;)

Hi Shini,
Looking at the initial movieinfobatch data you supplied the problem is that your video files were encoded using video and audio codecs that Video-SL doesn't support. Your files were a wide range, using the video codecs IV41, XVID, DX50 and m1s and the audio codecs MS, twos and QDM2. Did you encode these videos yourself?
Video-SL supports the video codecs H.264, DV, Motion JPEG A, Motion JPEG B, MPEG-4 and the audio codecs PCM, AAC, MP3. Make sure you use these when encoding your videos.

To Shaun: Yes, Serato works perfectly with audio files, no problem so far since more than a year, even with intensivee skratching/beatjuggling
To Michael: I tried to use VSL with the demo videos from your site (here : www.scratchlive.net) , so it can't be a codec problem!

Hi Shini,
You're right, it's definitely more than a codec problem however those video files won't play on any Video-SL setup, so I suggest re-encoding them to a format that is compatible.
Can you please tell me if you load the demo videos in QuickTime do they play ok then?
Also can you please give me the specs of your graphics card?

My video card is a nVidia 9500GT with 1GB memory.
Concerning the demo videos, I think they load fine in Quicktime, but I'll double check this this evening.
Thanks again for your support!

Hey Shini,
Thanks for the info, please do let me know how you get on with the demo videos in QuickTime.
If you go the Setup screen in Video-SL and click the control tab can you please tell me the 5 digit build number of the version that you are using?

Hey Mike!
About the demo videos, they play fine on quicktime player (the version you told me to install), no problems playing the vids so far :)
About the 5 digits number, it's 11025! And I insist, I'm not a registered user, it's just the demo! I need this demo to work before purchasing!
I sincerely hope my posts are helping you to find what's wrong, I really need to get this da**ed plugin to work!!!

Hey Shini,
Can you try this please:
1) Open movieinfobatch and tick the "Video-SL Debug Panel Enabled" box.
2) Open Scratch Live and Video-SL - you will now see the debug panel displayed on the right of the Video-SL panel.
3) Click the "yuv422" dropdown box and select "one".
4) Try playing the demo videos.
5) If they don't play, click the "yuv422" dropdown box and select "off".
6) Try playing the demo videos again.
Please let me know how you get on.

Ok, I tried to do the manipulation you told me, here are the results:
- No video when yuv422 is on "one" (the white arrow scrolls in the void in the central display),
- Same behaviour when yuv422 is set to "off"

Hi Shini,
Can you please tell me where you got the "quicktime alternative" codecs you mentioned earlier from? I'd like to test these out, as currently I'm at a bit of a loss as to what is the problem here :(

Hi,
Here is the link for QT alternative: www.clubic.com
But I removed it from my computer to test VSL with an official Quicktime version, so it shouldn't interact (except if the uninstaller keep some files on the hd)

Hey Shini,
We'll need to look into this a bit more, we're thinking something from the QuickTime alternative is interferring somehow. We'll need to test this and get back to you.

Hi Shini,
We've done some tests here and installing the QuickTime alternative you linked to caused issues on our setup. If you can I'd recommend re-installing your OS and starting again.

Hi,
What kind of issues? Did you get the same results I had (no video display at all) ?
Btw, I think I'll install windows 7 soon, hope it will finally solve the problem :)

No we didn't have that issue, the QuickTime alternative left our video files unplayable in QuickTime.
I'd suggest holding off on installing Windows 7 as QuickTime is not compatible with it and you'll be unable to run Video-SL.

Ok,
I tried to VSL with the demo movies on my fresh install of Windows 7, using quicktime 7.5, then 7.6.4, then 7.5 again, and I still have the same problem, VSL behaves exactly the same : no video, no audio, no preview... It acts as if the plugin can't open the file, the only thing that is correctly computed is the length of the video (my deck gives me this informtion).
The video plays correctly in quicktime, with no sound (so I assume there's no sound on your demo videos), so I think this is really a problem coming from the plugin itself, that occurs when it attempts to open/decode the file.
btw, are you planning to support more formats? Maybe I could get the plugin to work with another codec, like mpeg, or xvid, or wmv, or anything else!
I'd be glad to test some beta versions of vsl, I really want this plugin to work on my computer!!

Unfortunately, this beta version behaves exactly the same way on my computer....
No video at all, neither in the output window, nor the video decks :(
(i managed to get the sound track of an avi file though, but it was very chunky and the pitch keeped jumping randomly)
