ok..
so I went through weeks of re-organizing my library.
renaming files, modifying tags, etc.
I set up an external drive to be synced up to my master copy on my home workstation.
I built the crates in serato on the external drive, built overviews, etc.
All the tags are in place! Artist is in the artist field, title in the title field, I put version of the song in the comment field, source of the video (promo only, screenplay, etc) in the album field, etc...
all is good!!! I play with files, make cue points, loops, etc...
well...
I add some more tracks so I do the update thing. I go through the whole process of re-syncing the external hard drive with the master copy using allway sync (PC app). Works great!
Now the pain the ass part... I now have to open serato and drag over from the folders of what I updated... not always easily found in the multiple folders I have all my videos in.
After that I have to rescan id3 tags in order to find out what is now deleted.
well... after it rescanned all the files... it made the tags of the files all jacked up...
now in the title field it has more than just the title... it has almost the whole file name instead... it reverted some tags back from before I fixed them..
wtf ?!?!
....
this needs to be a SERIOUS fix !!
anyone have a work-around until they fix this?
I am using a PC for my main workstation and syncing to the external drive.
I DJ on my MAC.
Which doesn't see the files, crates, drive, etc.. until I am DJ-ing.

it has nothing to do with the hard drives.
I did all this on my pc.
I update my hard drive with new content.
and while it is still connected to my pc I start up scratch live and proceed to update the crates.
How I update is basically drag and entire folder of videos back into a crate that has the same content. The reason is because I have no idea which tracks are new. It will only add new content and not make double copies into a crate.
That part is fine... I can see the new tracks right away. The problem is when I need to figure out which tracks I deleted. The only way is to "rescan id3 tags"... that is when it resets tags back to another version which I since updated. .. as I pointed out in my initial post.

Yup, that is a problem indeed.
What probably would work (I haven't tried it... my logic says that there are a few pitfalls) is to backup your metadata folder before using the id3 rescan function and then eventually trying to put it back. This means however that files with a new location are kind of screwed. You would have to manually copy the metadata files into the proper new location. Hope that makes sense.
BTW: Not to start a flamewar ... aren't you using VirtualDJ anymore?

flamewar?
I have been slowly transitioning to just using Serato Video now. I have a found that more and more venues here in Las Vegas have the ttm56sl and my backpack actually allows me to carry both laptop, mixer and other things with ease.
I have posted time and time again some of the desperately needed improvements with Virtual DJ to the right people. They seem to be focused on getting more of the controller support fixed than anything relating to the timecode using club dj. All year long I have told them the importance of being able to read tag info from mp4 (h.264) video files and they just brush me off like it is not a big deal. ... so I go with what works.
I never said I didn't like serato video before.. just that it needed some improvements on certain things. They did that so far... and keeps improving.
Virtual DJ seems to be focusing more on the mobile DJ market and I need something that is serious about the timecode club dj user... which is me.

TTM57 I hope :)
They had to remove writing to mp4 tags directly due to some issues.

I meant for VDJ to READ tag info for the mp4 (h.264)... not serato.. it READS the files great... and I love it.
and yes... I meant the ttm57sl... whoops..

the guys over at VDJ are just not listening to the serious timecode using club dj right now.. that is the problem with them.
Great product and it worked during the time I used it.. but if they had listened to more of us and was more pro-active for the club dj user then I would be having a different conversation right now.
oh well...
