Talk about Serato Video and Video-SL.

What program can be used to edit mp4s video and audio

I like to use Vegas through parallels to edit my avi and mpeg videos, however when it comes to mp4(which I realize is the most reliable file format with video-sl)Vegas doesn't recognize them to import or export.I use iskysoft and handbrake to convert to mp4 and I use vixy to convert youtube videos to mp4.The problem is when I get an mp4 with good video and low volume audio,or great audio and poor video. Is there a program that allows you to import the mp4 edit the audio and video and export it as an mp4?I keep downloading hese conversion programs thinking they are the answer and all they are doing is cluttering my desktop.Since mp4s are the video-sl standard we need the best tools.I like serato and want to remain loyal to video and audio mixing with it,but I'm spending more time playing converter man searching the web for the right tools than djing and vjing.
Thanks for taking the time to hear me out,

Hey, are you sure vegas doesn't recognize mp4?! I swear edited a video on my pc that has vegas on there like 5 months back. Did you try more than one file? Maybe its just that file.

Vegas will edit some mp4s depending on the specific codec. Most convert to dv format for editing.

Which version of Vegas are you using? I currently use Vegas 6.0 and cannot import mp4 files created in Handbrake.... However, a friend of mine uses Vegas 8.0 and has no such problems.

Can anyone confirm this? or is it just a codec isssue?

To answer my own question.....

Vegas 8.0 imports H264 MP4 files correctly - Vegas 6 only imports the audio

I have vegas 6.0,but now I'm on mac anyway and parralells is kind of sluggish with vegas anyway. It isn't worth the vegas upgrade price right now.I am using final cut express to do some editing now. Thanks for your response to my question.I am however a Vegas veteran and love how easy it is to get right to business!!!I haven't checked out Hyper Engine yet though.

i would not recommend editing mp4 files at all, for numerous reasons. get the original VOB file if you can.
nik39 8:43 PM - 23 March, 2009
a-swift, can you elaborate on the reasons?
a-swift 9:05 PM - 23 March, 2009
1 major reason is the mp4 he has was probably created by recompressing the DVD VOB file so it is one generation less quality.

I meant besides that obvious one :) Trying to learn.

I have vegas pro 8 and it imports mp4's as audio. If anyone can tell me how to get it import as a video file i would love to know how.

a-swift is on the money. trying to edit mp4 ends up looking and sounding like ass to me. try working with a vob or mpeg2 (same thing) and you get way better results.

^yup.... importing and editing mp4 was in my rookie days ;) a whole 6 months ago lol

I was just tryin to make a non-stop video mix on dvd for early night. All my vids are now either .mov's with h.264 or .mp4's with h.264. the h.264 .mov's work fine. Oh well.
