DJ AM Power 106 Tracklisting
DeezNotes
9:07 PM - 13 January, 2006
What we're gonna do here is put up the track listing to the mixes posted here: scratchlive.net. We will post each "track" numerically. Each track meaning a song loaded to one deck. If someone gets something incorrect, the correction can be posted with a new track listing. If you make additions, post the new track listing with your additions to keep it accurate and up to date.
Hopefully we can keep this interesting and fun by expanding our knowledge of music, 'cause I know I can't name all those tracks. Hopefully we won't have too many arguments on multi-tracking and pre-recordings (let's leave that for the other post).
Here are the links to the mixes if you don't already have 'em:

i strongly agree with mr. king.... i really feel like i'm a f'n loser. i quit.
give your mailing address, i will drop by and hand over everything i own that has to do with music (I'll even throw in my ol' Ensoniq EPS.... but you gotta hold down the center right above the keyboard in order to calibrate the keys). that's tha last thing i'd want to be, a F#*King Loser.

Why because only a corn ball amature dude would post on here wanting to know the names of the songs on that mix... the only thing I could say is that the 38 special song is a little off the beating track but its also some LA cornball rock shit. If you DONT KNOW the songs on this mix instantly u proably should not be posting on her u should be practicing behind your turntables not wasting time on the internet......
Also the Black Eyed Peas Kevin Scott remix biggest piece of shit i've heard in a long time.
Also Sweet Home Alabama should be banned, unless u are getting tipped dough it should never be played.....

Not that I want to make any assumptions about how old anyone here might be, but let's say someone is in their late teens/early 20's (born 1983-1988)...some of those songs came out a decade or more before they were even born.
I can be as big a Music Snob as anyone, but not only do I actually like "Sweet Home Alabama" I've played it at the end of the night to my Music Snob-infested Deep House crowds and most of *them* seem to enjoy it as well. I'll take a *whole night* of classic rock (even the most played-out stuff) over any of the commercial "bitches, bling-bling, bam-bam" (or as I also call it "KMEL Hell") garbage that currently infests the charts, clubs and radio.
And then there's the old saying "the only stupid question is the one you didn't ask"...even if people *did* take your advice to "go back behind your turntables" how are they supposed to learn what songs are what if they just do that and don't "waste time on the internet" asking questions? And even if you find it "corn ball" why spend the time insulting people (3x)?

Don't let him get to you guys. There's a LOT that can be said about him. It's just not worth it. I almost replied to him, but I realized it's not worth my time. I'd rather spend it making the list of the rest of this mix where kevinscott left off.

mark and deez are on to something crucial regarding the "negative attitudes" recently being displayed here on the ssl forum or any forum for that matter.
i could just imagine how differnt these guys/gals would have reacted to AM's or anyone else's mixes (ex: slyce) if it soley incorporated the music of their liking. they'd probably be the first to respond and post their analysis and breakdown to school us.
looking at it from their point of view, it would be like me dissing on a dj who just posted his/her grand-mixmaster-cuttup-materpiece of their classical opera collection (not that there's anything wrong with opera or classical music, just using a contrasting example). my dad isn't so fond of the music i grew up with, and i'm pretty sure my dad's dad wasn't so fond of his either. is this disconnect call the generation gap?

Sorry but I can appricate any DJ who is dope no matter what kind of music they mix. I just think its pathetic watching all these young guns sweat like a whore in church over this below average mix. Its not like its a dj Riz or spinbad mix, I mean its AM for god sake, Do u guys forget that he was in the "butterfly baby" rock group? I mean basicaly he's a toy who got real lucky. Yea he can scratch and shit but so can a thousand people. His sets are not creative and there is no flow. Ive seen him in clubs and let me tell you that AM dont fly in new york city. I mean really, listen to the 90s hip hop set in there. Could anything be worse that that? And as far as the rock stuff, djs in NY been running that shit for a long time. Records like sweet home alabama that may seem like taking a chance to you guys from out of town are like played out bullshit that u hear every night here.......
The reason I started posting is because I came up aroud hip hop heads and if u didnt know an obvious song back then u didnt ask motherfuckers like "hey dude whats that song that everybody but me knows?" U took notes and did research. If u wanna know what a song is type the lyrics in to google and write "song lyrics" then check out what u get use deductive reasoning, listen to clips on itunes and within a few minnutes you will have your song.......U dont need to make a fool out of yourself and look like a toy on the board. Being successful in the dj world as far as nightclubs etc etc is all about image. Look at AM he would never be where he is if he didnt get his gastric bypass... So im giving out free advice on how to not look like a herb.
PS I know i cant spell so no need to point it out if u hate me.

This is exactly what I am talking about.... here you have some kid who's hip hop knowledge is basicaly at a 3rd grade level but insists on posting and letting everybody else know he don't know shit. THis is what Not to do in a situation like this. if you clearly dont know shit about common knowledge samples breaks and classic hip hop u should really shut the f*&k up and wait for the grownups to respond.
J_dim dont get mad at me for this take it as free advice.
Dont play yourself out, keep your hand close to your chest, this dj shit can be like a game of poker and sometimes the best hand don't win, the winnners are the people who hustle and play their cards right.........
We are talking about AM right, a perfect example of a good player in the game....
If you dont know the answer dont raise your hand and waste the classes time

I just want to help out filling the playlist with the songs that I know. I admit that I don't know every hip hop song/break in the planet, thats why im doing my f*cking homework. so don't even trip im not wasting anybody's time.
If you know all the songs in that mix why don't you give us a hand and kindly post them up.
If not keep it moving

KingOfDisco12's: With all due respect, I hear where you're coming from. Although I understand, I don't agree. Your reasoning would mean that everyone should be afraid of asking questions to keep from looking stupid. There is no such thing as a dumb question. That's what forums like this are all about. Almost every post is a question; and if you never ask, you'll never know (or it'll take you a lot longer to figure it out). Guys that have been in the game should drop knowledge to the younger cats, because they are the ones that will carry this legacy on. For their sake, I don't want them making the same mistakes, doing the same research. I say take this knowledge and move forward from here to get further then we have.
If being negative all the time is who you are, then do you. It's a shame you gotta be that way, because I'm sure you have a lot to contribute. We all don't know everything, but I know you have some knowledge you could bless us all with. There's nothing wrong with constructive critisizm, but DEstructive critisizm is something I try to stay away from. That's why I hesitated to respond in the first place. I hope you can understand what it is I'm trying to say rather than preparing a Fuck You-type response.
When I joined this forum, it was because of all the positive energy. Let's keep it that way. SSL is blowing up. How would it look if all the new users join and see a bunch of arging and off-topic discussions? For real, let's cut the bullshit and keep the vibe positive.
If we didn't share ideas & information, SSL [and we] probably wouldn't be here.

Damn man just stop just Fning stop.
The kids are trying to learn, they are asking questions, we as the ODL school should be providing knowledge and apllauding that they even asked. Damn I'm glad someone is trying instead of being that whack ass who doesn;t know anything on permant basis. The same attitude you portray in your posts is one of the main reasons our American School system is so Fed up today. Kids sitting in class at Crenshaw high now and the late 80s, afraid to ask a question because some jerk in the back thinks that it's a waistew of their time and will vocally say so. It's a forum man. a discussion board to provide and ask for answers. If you think this is a waiste of your time thread then don't come and read it. You would have gotten a better outcome from just telling people to google the lyrics as a suggestion then trying to degrade them.
You also would have gotten some credibility out of your peers.
All you new DJs trying to advance please keep asking and give it shot by posting what you think. Those of us here trying to help will keep trying to answer your questions. Maybe together we can both advance.

There's still a lot more left over. I really want to know the 2 baltimore club joints he used. The production sounds too good to be one of the newer producers from bmore. It has the old baltimore flavor I like.

And for the record, I like 'Sweet Home Alabama' too.

FYI Deez, the bmore club tracks are:
Pharrell "Can I Have It Like That" (Chad Hugo RMX) -- he got this directly from Chad a couple days before the show. STRAIGHT HEAT! Not sure if its going to be an official release...
Snoop Dogg "Acid Drop" -- this was a white label vinyl house/bmore club mix.

Thanks Kevin. I knew it was too good to come from bmore. All the old school producers who made all the good stuff don't make it anymore (at least not as much). '96 was a hot year for [baltimore] club music. That was the year "Watch Out for da Big Girl" and "Pick 'Em Up" came out (maybe '97 for the latter). I just dug up all my old club from those years, and trust me - if everyone likes those two tracks, they'll love all the other old stuff. I doubt it'll get re-printed.
I'm really trying to get my hands on some of the underground Chicago stuff from the late 80's - early 90's. I have a little bit, but not all the stuff they played in the clubs and on the radio from back then.

Well... since I ain't a hater and trading music hear is a no no. DJ_Mike_Coquilla and DeezNotes, I might have what you're looking for. PM me and I'll help you out. I know how hard it is to get white label stuff. B-more is where its at! the look on people's faces when i start bumping it during my sets are priceless. They at first get weirded out by it and then all of a sudden the bass kicks in and people start going nuts. As a point of reference, it doesn't fly in hollywood clubs though, people are idiots there.

On a side note, K-Fed ruined papazao, a thoroughly great beat. Thank god I have the original.

Hey speaking of the above message.
Anyone remember when your DJ status was elivated because you had new unheard music?
I mean when people would go out to the clubs to hear music you wouldn't or couldn't hear on the Radio?

The snoops acid drop is NOT A BMORE CLUB RECORD.... it was done by les Rymes Digital aka Thin White Duke AKA Jean Lu Conte
If you want it lemmie know I'll u send it but you gotta gimmie somthing in return.
As far as the Can I Have it Like That It is also not Bmore it has not "Sing Sing" Or Lyn Collyns so it's not really b-more but I heard the neps are working on b-more style LP...
Same goes if u want this track will trade....

Naw its all good its a regional thing so u cant help but not know. its A style of club music orginating in baltimore maryland. USA. Its basicaly like the baltimore version of miami bass and detriot booty. Its house speed usually 124-132 BPM it's like ghetto house shit, but its got a really dope feel and swing to it. Its not stiff like the Detriot shit and its got a more underground edge that miami bass. Most tracks lately use the drums from "sing-sing" by Gaz salsoul Lp or 12".... Or Lyn Collins "Think" most recent thing u could hear that might give u an idea is the diplo remix of holla back girl. but thats not really b-more but it will give u an idea what it sounds like. Diplo goes overboard and is an overated producer/DJ but it will give u an idea of the style
For a long time you could only hear it in bmore and DC but in the past few years its crept to Philly and now is hot in Downtown scene in NY
go to google and google baltimore club music of go to Baltimoreclubtracks.com for more info...

Wow.... that's a LOT of posts since I went to sleep!
Ok here's the deal... everyone can find info on DJ Technics' site listed above. I'm born and raised in Baltimore. I still live there. I grew up on that shit.
nik39: I remember when club records cost $5.99, and they usually came with at LEAST 2 hot tracks, plus remixes, instrumentals and acapellas. Once we hit 2002, prices started to jump over $10 and you would get one hot track on one side and a dud on the other. I remember talking to Technics and Dukey Man in their store telling them I didn't want to buy a particular record, because it was like buying one track for $12.99. They (and other people) responded "I never thought of it like that."
They would never sell their tracks for .99 like iTunes, because they're not moving units like iTunes is.
KingOfDisco12's: All shit aside, thanks for explaining the Baltimore thing. I KNOW I have the Rod Lee track you're looking for. Just PM me. It's sad that Baltimore club has been defined by "Think" and "Sing Sing" drums. Those are the new [younger] producers in the game. Like I said in my last post, I dug up all my old Baltimore Club and the shit from back in the day was much more creative with samples from EVERYWHERE!! You rarely heard those drums from back then. If they were smart, they'd push all the old shit from Griff & Booman, DJ Class and Jimmy Jones instead of making a bunch of new stuff.
I could kill a set of old Baltimore Club and it would be all new shit to everyone even though it's 10 years old. "Watch Out For Da Big Girl" is 10 YEARS OLD.
KingOfDisco12's is right about Mr. Postman too.

No problem. I thought someone else would beat me to it. There's a lot of knowledge on this forum since most of the vinyl junkies have switched to SSL. It took me a while to catch on to the whole "breaks" and "digging" aspect of DJing, but I don't know many younger DJs who are into that sorta thing. It's almost like either you were a part of the culture (back in the early hip hop days) or you learn to mature into it as you get older.

KingofDisco - I gotta give it up to you man, you talk a lot of ish but you do know what you're talking about! And sorry for the confusions but the King is also right about the snoop and pharrell acid remixes, I didn't make that clear in my last post. As for the Mr. Postman song, is it me or did Juelz Santana sample the postman b-more beat? Also PM me, I might have what you're looking for.
For all of the DJ's that are just finding out B-more house, please be warned that if the crowd is not coming to watch you or if the crowd is not open minded enough, you'll clear the dancefloor immediately. Immediately followed by some corny ass girl asking you to play something that she can dance to.
And on a side note: my favorite 90's rap track is......
L.O.N.S - Sound of the zeekers. The beast change was ridiculous back in the day. Too bad people look at me weird when I try to play it out.

As far as I know it was the heatmakers, young cats that prolly don't know much about b-more at all besides the stuff that was semi-popular in the early 90's in the Black club scene, ala FrankSki, etc.

That would be ridiculous. And of course they would get all the credit for it. Hope you b-more producers sell your ish high, cause people can gonna make a lot more off of you.

Not disputing you but that beat definitely sounds %100 like something the Heatmakerz would make. That's their style %100. Dante Ross, as far as I know, has never made anything that sounds even remotely like Mr. Postman.
And as far as production credits go, I would think it would be the other way around, ie., Dante taking credit for a Heatmakerz beat. I mean, he's Dante Ross, a legend to some. The Heatmakerz aren't even at his level to take credit from him.

Those were 2 different songs:
1) Jungle Brothers - Because I Got It Like That
2) De La Soul - Buddy (Native Tounge Remix)
The lyrics for "Because I Got It Like That" are similar to the lyrics in "Buddy." This may be confusing if you've never heard "Because I Got It Like That" and "Buddy" is labeled as the "Native Tounge Remix." The "Native Tounge Remix" is the more popular version of the song; no one ever plays the original version of "Buddy."

I wasn't really presenting it as a judgement call either way. In the context of DJ AM's mix, I guess it's a good thing because there's no other way you'd be able to loop other drums cleanly over something like "Sweet Home Alabama" (recorded with a live drummer in 1974).
As far as the now-huge volume of older songs that have been quantized and remixed to sound more "modern"...personally I'm way beyond bored with this, but occasionally I run across something that is particularly clever or creative...or manages to respect the integrity of the original. Dimitri From Paris's re-edit of the O'Jay's "I Love Music" would be a good example of the latter...it mixes perfectly with current house, but still sounds like it did in 1975.

Yo dimitri's edits are really dope...... The way he balances the locked beats and classic 70s sound is sick...
Yea as far as like classic rock shit it kinda sounds shitty when you have it all quantized, I personally will maby lock an intro by cutting and pasting but I try to find clever ways to mix them in their orgional form if I can.... Slight edits where the croud cant tell the difference and it makes it easire to mix are the way to go all the shit where its like sweet home alabama with Some drums underneath it or some "rock breaks" shit is wack. The ony thing that seemed re done in this mix was the journey, but the thing about that is Dont stop believing is all about the build up and remixed like that it loses its punch, also if you dont let it play to the end you are basicaly wack... and people will hate you....
getting back to what I was saying take the magic carpet ride you could go in to Pro tools and put a snare or high hat on the four or a 1 bar intro so you could cut it in, but then leave the rest of the song the same, so it will drop on time and will still sound the same to the croud and you have an easier mix than finding the exact stop in the feedback or cutting in the "I Like You" wich is not exactly the best sounding way to do it.... When I play that song I have a cue point set in the feeddback where the snare would be and I cut the feedback and drop it on time....
Havent had time to edit it yet...
Those pop rock edits are terrable.... but they have the right idea on some of em...

KingofDisco I am not sure I understand your question regarding turntable lab but I used it as a resource to buy vinyl for clubs in the past. If you are referring to "what is dope" in LA in terms of Stores, there really is no great spot to DIG. I have what I call "record brokers" who I call and find me what I am looking for or I EBAY it.

DJHSL: Assuming we accept the fact the MIX was done live and assuming you know the music he is playing You can usually tell if something is a remix or not based on how it is inserted. If you listen closely to the sound the scratch makes or when a DJ inserts a record on the 1 of the 8 bar count you can usually tell in the first few seconds if it is a mash up or not. Or you can always use *GASP* deductive reasoning.

I generally don't fuck with too many re-edits.
Set the record a little slower and ride the center with your finger.
Live drummers are a b!tch but do enough old 70s or parliment and you get use to it.

I mix unquantinzed shit all the time from OG vinyl. If you have light (damn near perfect) hand control or use the pitch slider to make adjusts while it's playing, you can do it. But you have to know the record back and forth.I generally don't fuck with too many re-edits.

corny. Step ya blending game up a little and you'll see what I mean.
Hologram has the right idea...
Please have been using their ACTUAL hands instead of re-edits for years. Come on man, this ain't dj preschool.
and I'll take that challenge on the U2. Gimme 2 copies, I'd flip to the break first then come back in on the intro after. I never tried it before but I guarantee that it'll work. Live re-edits son!!!
I mix "New Year's Day" by U2 with no problems for 8 bars until the big truncation occurs. 32 counts ain't a long time especially at like 130.
You're supposed to be better than that if you wanna talk as much sh!t as you do.

What the fuck are you taling about dumb ass.... THe intro for the u2 is 4 bars open drums so if I wanna mix it for thirty two beats i ether need to A. Use cue point, B have 3 turntables C. Have a re-edit... I've been djing with live drummer record for years but some shit needs an edit.. no matter what u say, Take "Smells Like Teen Spirit" the intro goes from about 110 to 116 in 4 bars. so no matter how dope you claim to be, I dont really see anyone mixing those guitars really cleanly over anything. Even if you have the hands and pitch on lock people will hear the pitch shift.... so I quantized the guitars and locked em at 116, thats not wack or not being skilled its just fucking working smarter not harder....
Yea we all know experienced djs can blend anything if they know how to ride it but certan shit is not possable to to super clean.... as far as the u2 what fucking break are you talking about? The only "Break" in the traditional hip hop sense IE Drums and nothing else is at the intro Dumb ass.... So you are wrong about the u2 thing, yea We both could proably do it on three turntables but who the fuck wants to do that. I djed a night with 3 tables and lt me tell you there is nothing more tireing that djing with records on 3 tables. Fucking 2 hrs of that shit doing blends and quickmixes and dubs will leave you feeling like you just djed for 12 hrs...
So now that I have serato I work smarter not harder....
Also I will agree some shit should just be mixed in its og form but if you creating intros for your specific set or some custom shit for specific blends I think thats dope and the way shit is heading...

You're funny.
All these assumptions. I have a 54 because it works for me. I'm not a mad scracher so I haven't had to replace the faders in over 6 years. Preventative maintence does wonders. And who ever said anything about that making me OG.
I guess the pyramid mixer I have on my work bench must be becasue I want to be OG. NOT! I still have it because it still works.
The only thing I was pointing out was how to do it with a live drummer. I made a loop on the intro and because its a live drummer its not perfect. Yeah I could go in and edit it and make it perfect but hell never had a problem just using my finger. I don't do Janet over it, I use it as a break beat but need to ride it when I mix in the next song. I have a few break beat records that some of my boys just looped the intros of rock stuff and pressed up 500 almost 10 years ago. Sorry they didn't have the money to buy all the stuff to edit it perfectly back then.
So lets see.
I don't have a 54 to be OG.
I don't replace faders all the time.
And yes there is a way to do it with out three turntables.
hmmmm 0 for 3 dumbass

You can also download, listen or comment on the full UNCUT mix here:

Enjoy! There are also several other previously unreleased AM mixes on my Soundcloud and I will be posting a few more this year as well. So get your follow on!
Also, regarding the U2 vs. Janet Jackson mashup, it was originally done by Go Home Productions out of the UK (www.gohomeproductions.co.uk). There were several versions of it floating around (incl. Party Ben's) but it's the Go Home Productions version that was used in this mix.
