SSL and DENON DN-HS5500????

DJ dVO 3:37 PM - 30 March, 2008
Would like to know if the DENON DN-HS5500 ACTIVE PLATTER would work with SSL and TM57SL.
DJ mle 6:37 AM - 31 March, 2008
There is no native support via MIDI. But, mine work fine using the timecode CD's ripped to wav files. Here's my setup :-)

Very nice setup. I would only use one 5500 since it is built for "2-in-1". Do you have the HDD or the CD option?
BriChi 6:10 PM - 31 March, 2008
check this one out,,,, I just finished this coffin last week

@mle: I've read other threads that said with ripped timecode, one only able to play forward and not backward. Is this true? I am leaning toward this way more and more instead of waiting for the Numark NS7.

@BriChi: Nice coffin! Well made.....

Thank you,,,

I never heard of the deck not being able to play backwards with the control signal, my decks work exactly the same as if I were using the control cd vs the mp3.

BriChi I have the same wireless head units. Does your mixer have two mic inputs. I'm using the 57SL and it only has one. Hence I have a ran MLM-42 line mixer in a rack mounted case. I also have a Driverack PA in the case with a power rack outlets. I wish they come out with a new mixer that is video friendly and has two mic inputs.

Nope, I keep a very small mic mixer in my laptop back, If I need to utilize both mics and plug in a sax player or something, then I plug the mic mixer into my aux in or channel 3 line and run both mic's, otherwise, 90% of the time, I only use the one mic on the right side so it works out well

Is Serato going to be coming out with MIDI support for active platter control? Using the ripped time code doesn't minimize latency as well as straight MIDI control would.
BriChi 8:55 PM - 30 April, 2008
They should be able to, pcdj can do it, I am sure Serato/Rane can
salsomano 4:38 AM - 19 May, 2008
I bought the denon dn hs5500 but i haven't be able to make it work with serato, i burned a copy of the control signal cd in to the flash memory but the 5500 is not reading it.

Can anybody help me out with this problem? truly appreciated!

what did you rip it as, the 5500 reads mp3 and wav only.

I would start by downloading the wave from here:rane.com

Unzip it and copy the wave file to the flash drive

Do you know how to use the 5500 db yet? you can set this up 2 ways, Use the MM software that came with it and create the database or just simply copy the wave file to the flash drive, plug it into the 5500, go into util and update/create a new database.

Also, the flash drive HAS to be formatted as FAT32, if it is ntfs or any oter format the 5500 can't see it, The best way to set this if you are starting from sscratch is format the flash drive in the 5500. Go into UTIL and select initialize then format and confirm it

Hey GiO! You from Toronto spinning salsa? :)

Did you convert the audio signal to .wav or mp3? It works when I tried it at a friend's system. You also have to select the play mode to Relative. Just make sure you select the right Deck on the 5500.

Or ABS mode

I have two DN-HS5500's with the timecode ripped to the DB through via flash drive. Is there an ability to set cue points? I must be doing something wrong because I can't seem to set cue points. Can someone let me know how to do this if its possible. I do have it in Relative mode, forward and back spinning is functional, I just can't set a cue point.

Thanks
BriChi 3:54 PM - 24 May, 2008
you HAVE to be in ABS mode for cue points, hot starts etc.... to react properly on cd players and the 5500, in REL mod it just tracks movement not the time of the track
djrhouse 11:37 PM - 24 May, 2008
I will try that now. Thanks
djrhouse 12:06 AM - 25 May, 2008
BriChi; I tried ABS and REL modes and I still cannot set cue points. I hit play/pause and then Cue and it wont set the cue point. I must be doing something wrong. The jog wheel spins forward and backward, I can scratch with the jog wheel but that is about all I get. Can you explain further.

Thanks
djrhouse 12:31 AM - 25 May, 2008
I got the hot starts to work but still I can't set cue points. Reverse and Dump also work along with the pitch control.
BriChi 6:05 AM - 25 May, 2008
first make sure u have line select in the SSL setup screen. A cue point is set when u press pause and then play again. Its different than the way pioneer does it,
djrhouse 12:54 PM - 25 May, 2008
It works, Thanks. That sure is different from how it works with the Pioneers.

I appreciate the help.

Now that is really weird!
BriChi 4:08 PM - 25 May, 2008
you can go into the denons setup screen and change cue to "other" it then will be the same as pio's.

I think denons way is easier anyway, really now weird. With pio you need to hit an extra button to set a cue point and then play the song

Denon- song is playing younpress pause where u want the cue point and then simply just press play to continue the song
pio- song is playing you have to press pause then cue then play again to start playing again

So how good is the DENON DN-HS5500? any bugs or does it perform good?
would be nice to have a compact setup, one DN-HS5500 the Ecler evo 4.
and the SSL box.
BriChi 2:17 PM - 29 May, 2008
Works great!!!! I love em, They had 'Minor" bugs but they are already worked out and new FW was released about 2 weeks ago for it.

BriChi, real nice setup. i dont have the cash for 2 DN-HS5500 right now
so i will probably buy one and a new mixer. the Empath is real nice
but i want effects.. so it's between the allen & heath xone 92 or the new
Ecler Evo 4. but a rotary empath would be real nice but then i dont have
any effects :(

how is it to mix with just one deck ?

Thanks
it is ok to mix with one deck, I didn't like it too much because I was always afraid I would forget to switch layers before I do something like hit cue, pause, etc...and it would mess up the track playing out loud. If you are real careful, then mixing with 1 deck is the same as having 2 separate ones
