Ripping Videos Sucks Big Time

djbigmark 3:49 PM - 2 March, 2008
We need to petition Promo provide us with a download service. They have to realize the future depends on a download service to the dj community. I spent the whole weekend ripping videos and it is boring.
D-Twizzle 5:20 PM - 2 March, 2008
welcome to the club, there's a lot of work involved to get your video library ready for serato..
sixxx 6:11 PM - 2 March, 2008
I kinda prefer it this way or we will have instant teletubbies by the 1000's.
itchie 7:37 PM - 2 March, 2008
rip videos/ ps3 inbetween...
DJ Mad Matt 9:12 PM - 2 March, 2008

DJ Mad Matt 1:27 AM - 3 March, 2008

Doug is working on it now.

I remember these kind of frustrations when we had the ability to burn CD's of your record collection over. Man... it was time consuming to record EVERY record over so you can lighten your load... same thing... different technology.

I have been collecting & editing video for over ten years. Already have several thousands in my collection. I already encoded most of it to mp4 and still updating daily. It is part of what we do as professional DJ's.

Suck it up!!

hey bigmark. i can help you out here. just send me all your dvds and i will rip them for you at no charge.
Demon 2:25 AM - 3 March, 2008
Hahahhaha, good one. I rip all my VOBS, then I run Visual Hub and El Gato at the same time overnight. You can get a few hundred done each night. I'm saving all my VOB's too just in case there's a program down the line that will encode audio higher than 156.
a-swift 2:36 AM - 3 March, 2008
u defintely wanna save the vobs for any edits you decide to do

There is... depending on if you use pc or mac I guess.

I use a pc and the program I use is TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress to batch encode. It supports up to 320 kbs for audio for mp4.

Did I hear someone say ffmpeg, runs on all systems.
djbigmark 3:13 PM - 3 March, 2008
Ripping videos is like watching grass grow. But the payoff in the end will be worht it...but as u know already a download service will be here and all this work was done in vain..the industry needs to get with the times.

at least *somebody* got the joke.
DJ-Phat-AL 3:51 AM - 4 March, 2008
I kind of figured it was a joke... but it would be like approaching a chick and saying "hey... wanna give me a bj?".. you were joking but if she said yes... SCORE!!

tell me you wouldn't jump to the opportunity to get someone else's library to add to yours... especially video!!!

I have use that software from time to time but on a pc.
the software is great because you can separate chapters.

if you want to rip straight to mpeg2/vob:

select the following:

video tab:
decoding: mpeg-2 program stream

audio tab:
audio stream: (depends on the video)
decoding: mpeg-2 program stream

output tab:
save chapters: (depends on if you are ripping an entire disc or one chapter)
output format: mpeg-2 program stream file

when you output it will be in the mpg extension but you need to rename it to vob you can.
lvmez 1:13 PM - 4 March, 2008
visual hub seems to working fine($23).
a-swift 3:56 PM - 4 March, 2008
mac the ripper is free. that's cheaper than cinematize and visual hub
Charlie Five 5:25 PM - 4 March, 2008
Loki I also use Cinematize to separate into vob's and Visualhub to encode to mpeg 4's (h.264).

Do just as Al suggested. The small files that you are getting are prob just intro's to the next video.
sixxx 7:02 PM - 4 March, 2008
I use mac the ripper to rip to VOB and Visual Hub to convert to mp4 although I'm still not completely satisfied with audio not being able to go higher than 128kbps (AAC).
a-swift 10:50 PM - 4 March, 2008
you should be able to pass the bitrate command directlt to ffmpeg through the advanced screen, ie -ab 256

that would give you 256k encoded audio

What happens if VH passes -ab 128k and -ab 256k?
a-swift 11:14 PM - 4 March, 2008
i would think that any parameters you supply in advanced will overwrite defaults. i have no idea though really. only one way to find out.

ps in a terminal window should show you whats being done while it's encoding though
itchie 1:12 AM - 5 March, 2008
how big should the vobs be per song (roughly)?
sixxx 1:37 AM - 5 March, 2008
Depending on the length of the video. Anywhere between 170-300 Megs.
itchie 2:05 AM - 5 March, 2008
sweet. im in there.
sixxx 2:38 AM - 5 March, 2008
... and after they're compressed depending on the quality, bitrate, length, etc... from 50-120 megs or so.
eye357 1:58 PM - 5 March, 2008
Understand business formulas. High demand with small resources equal greater profits. Basically, once you let your area know that you have video dj services and they will want you, because we are only a few, start charging more. I'm giving most clubs a cheap rate on the first gig now they want me back but my cost has almost tripled. Why, where else they gonna go. So, I don't mind the long process of ripping, converting etc..., make them pay. Not personal it's only business. Not all djs are gonna run out and get into vdj because it is a process and we are ahead of the game. So guys be happy, keep ripping then rip these promoters, club owners and gogo bars. Get paid.
sixxx 2:57 PM - 5 March, 2008
This is my personal conversion rate.

39 VOB's to H.264 mp4 using Visual Hub High quality with Double Pass and Deinterlacing using a Macbook 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo = 320 minutes. - That's 1 Promo Only DVD.
itchie 9:05 PM - 5 March, 2008
i've been playing videos on thursdays and saturdays at the this club/bar i dj @ and getting famous! the newspaper is gonna do an article about me and vsl on saturday. so all this work ripping and converting aint shit especially when i start jet settin to my shows... i couldn't have done it without the help of several people on this forum. and i remember when serato came out i was doing the same thing, ripping a huge vinyl collection to mp3s in real time. remember that? one pop/crackle and you had to start over. THAT was a bitch!

too bad we're in the middle of no where, huh? I heard we are getting Delta at the airport so now those international flights to and from Humboldt will be possible.

Folks, Itchie IS rocking it (on a PC).

Don't forget to jack your rates Itchie
