I have been reading all the discussion posts and through each thread concerning ripping videos and playing them with VSL but I am still completely confused and dissatisfied with the quality of the videos and the process is so lengthly I will be retired from DJing before I get a collection of videos to use.
PLEASE anyone HELP and speak to me like I was born yesterday, because when it comes to the language and process of converting and playing videos Im a child.
Here are my specs.
Macbook 160 gig HD, 4 gig memory, external 250 gig HD, subscription to Promo Only videos, Handbrake with the VSL encoder and I have been using Imovie to separate the videos into single tracks typing title and artist info.
What do I need to buy?
What is the proper process to rip the videos from DVD and then separate them with the title and artist info.?
What is the best quality video settings that is compatible with VSL?

Get rid of Handbrake and use Visual Hub. That should be your first step.
Don't use iMovie to separate videos into single tracks. Use Mac The Ripper which is free.
Get that and let me know when you're ready to move on to the next step.

Mac The Ripper.
1. Insert Promo Only DVD into DVD-ROM Drive.
2. There are two choices. Disc and Mode. CHOOSE MODE.
3. Where it says Full Disc Extraction (little arrows) click on that and select
Title - Chapter Extraction
4. Now, extract each video individually.
For example: SChpt1 and EChpt 1 = video 1
SChpt2 and EChpt 2 = video 2
Notice you only have to change SChpt and EChpt changes when you change the
other one.
IMPORTANT
There are some videos that occupy more than one chapter. So, for those you need to select both chapters.
Example: For a video that occupies say chapter 1 & 2.
You would extract SChpt1 and EChp2.
S=Start E=End Get it? :) Good.
Once you have extracted all your video in invididual VOB's (which is the end result), you can rename them if you wish but you don't have to just yet.
NO ON TO VISUAL HUB TO CONVERT
You're going to do batch converting which is nice. So, all the videos will be done at once.
VISUAL HUB
1. Select MP4. - Why? It's a good container and the tag information can be edited in iTunes which will be make it easy.
2. Select Hint for Streaming and also H.264 Encoding
3. Quality - Check Standard, High or Go Nuts. The Higher you go, the better the quality but also the bigger the file. [so test each one using 1 video to see which one you like best]
4. Click on the Advanced button.
5. Select Deinterlace.
6. Select Two Pass. (you don't have to, but try it) This will take longer along with Deinterlacing which makes the picture more smooth so there no lines on the screen. Google DEINTERLACING if you want to learn more about that. Be prepared to do some major reading if you do. :)
7. Where it says extra ffmpeg flags select the last one: Use / n / keyframes
8. Replace the n with 25.
9. Audio you can leave alone but it will give you 128kbps ACC file which will sound good anyway. You can change the bitrate higher but I've found that even if you type 320, it won't go higher than 159-161. But, try it, if you get better results, let me know. :)
10. Click Save Settings.
11. Drop your VOB files where it says: Drag the files to be converted below.
Edit the location where you want them save and start.
Now just wait for the finish product.
:)
iTunes
You can import the mp4's in iTunes once they're done and edit their fields. Theere is a bug in SSL right now that won't let you show the bpm's in iTunes, but they will show in SSL once SSL has found the BPM's.
Let me know how it all went.

dude...you saved me a ton of time. Worked like charm. Props also to djsteel who posted the Visual Hub process as well. Thank you.

Yeah. I can't take credit for the Visual Hub info. I borrowed that from djsteel and modified just a little bit to meet my needs.
Couple of notes.
Don't even mess with the audio in Visual Hub as I contacted their tech support and they said it can't go higher than 128kbps.... which is not horrible but it isn't the best. It's 128kbps AAC which is better than mp3 anyway and it sounds good.
Also, you don't have to rip VOB's from Promo Only DVD's. You can also use Mac The Ripper to rip straight from ISO's.
If you don't know what an ISO, google it.

question: after i insert a disc, mac ripper reads it. i click "mode" and then "title-chapter extractION'. it's only giving me the option to rip the first "script 1". when i try and scroll to other scripts, it's only showing one script on dvd. but i play dvd, there are about 30 videos on it. any suggestions?

Script 1 is probably the main menu. There are more chapters... look around.....
