- why is the recording volume so low, when i'm in the yellow?
- (not recording related) what is the best way to disconnect the usb from the 57sl mixer to the mac laptop. do i need to turn one or the other off first before i even pull the usb out of the mac?
thx

Turn the recording gain/knob where you activate recording...position it to 3 or 4 oclock..trial and error.
There are a bunch of posts that talk about recording...search the forum

good one, is it bad to turn off the mixer while still connected to my mac (which is on)?

yeah, it seems ok at 3 to 4 o'clock. i just don't like the idea of even being in the yellow when recording though. just wish i had a little more headroom.

I push it to the yellow just before hitting red. You obviously don't want to go into the red(digital distortion very bad...analog distortion good). I'm going to assume you are trying to record your mixes because remember if your archiving vinyl you can use the ttm as a soundcard.

It's safe to go into the red on the 57 there's loads of headroom due to the 24bit internals and if you use that up the limiter will kick in.

Ok..If there's loads of headroom then why is there not another color after yellow or some way of knowing when limiters kick in so that way we know exactly how far to push the sound in a recording or any other situation for that matter?

ortofon88...from what i've read on here you're not at 0db until you see red...so there'll be no cliping as long as you keep it out of the red. Going from the last green to first yellow is somewhere around -6db i think.

the serato input meter should be set around 2 oclock. and your 57 should not be hitting red.
i recorded about 12 tracks yesterday and it seemed to be the best quality to me.
i also use the mp3 gain at 93db.
none of the tracks where hitting red.they where mostly in the yellow.sound quality seemed good.
i hope this set up helps out:)

thx - yeah i am recording mixes. this last one i took to a friend who said it came out pretty good, i just got pretty deep into the yellow on that one, on the first couple i wasn't that far in and they came out a little quiet.
i had my meter at about 4 oclock

4 seems to work pretty good for me too. you can always normalize and work with "ok" levels but never with distorted recordings. since using the 57 to record, my mixes sound a lot cleaner than with audacity.
