Batch Normalize?

skotdub 9:15 PM 24 October 2005
I originally had this in the Tips and Trick section, which probably wasn't the appropriate area.

Anyway, I'm looking for software to batch-normalize my entire Mp3 collection. What are you people using, and what would you recommend? Any opinions on the peak vs. "spectral analysis" normalizations?

I read the thread related to MP3Gain but I think I'd prefer software that did non-clipping, PEAK normalization. In other words, is there software that will automatically convert to Wav, Normalize, re-encode.

On a related note, will re-encoding after normalization cause much noticeable quality loss?

3rd times a charm... this isn't the appropriate section either :)

this should be under 'general discussion' since it is not pertaining to ssl, but to digital dj'ing in general. while you're over there, read the sticky posts at the top that talk all about what programs users here use and the pros and cons of them.

Personally I would rather, leave my MP3s as they are and just use the Gain knobs in SSL.
However, Adobe Audition/Cooledit pro will do what you want in a batch job.

You can tell mp3gain to do non-clipping PEAK normalization instead of using RMS normalization. Also mp3gain does NOT need to reencode the mp3s, which is a very good thing, as it wont affect the quality of your mp3 files.

Reencoding will generally loose quality, though only few people can hear the loss of quality if you reencode only once, but the more iterations of reencoding you have the easier it will be noticeable.
