Beat Juggling with the 57

hamzter 1:56 PM - 25 January, 2008
ok, so I wanted to practice beat juggling with the 57, but since I will be using SL for my tracks, I have a question.

I was thinking of using the buttons to load up the parts that I would want to use for juggling/scratching. Would this be the best way to call up different tracks or sections of tracks quickly? If not, what other way is there to do that?

Should I create a crate and just call the tracks up this way? If so, is this the fastest way to do so?

Sorry for the newbie questions, but I am still trying to get comfy with just using the buttons on the 57 instead of the laptop to call up tracks.

thanks,

Hamzter

maybe it helps: i made a youtube video with fast mixing using the 57 with small juggle-parts: Watchyoutube.com

Smooth B. tha's very cool.

so, can you explain what you are doing to get thru the tracks... did you build your crate first and then all you do is scroll thru and load? are you set in relative or absolute mode?

what other settings do you have that are not custom?

thanks and props again for sharing your video.
DJ Smooth B. 2:33 PM - 25 January, 2008
I work 100% in REL-Mode and yes, i have several crates for showcases, so i can scroll very fast through my library.

And i modified group 1, so i can use the joystick for keylock, instant doubles and set bpm for effect 1...

Do you watch the screens or do you just rely on the stickers on vinyl? If latter... how do you make sure that they are properly aligned?
nik39 3:52 PM - 25 January, 2008
+nice video!
hamzter 4:01 PM - 25 January, 2008
tha's a good question for Smooth.

I myself when I scratch, I look at the position of the record in relationship to the sound.

for mixing I look at the screen...
DJ Smooth B. 4:20 PM - 25 January, 2008
i always trust in my markers on the vinyl and my cuepoints :-) when i jump to my cuepoint, the markers are properly aligned
nik39 4:22 PM - 25 January, 2008
I dont understand... lets assume on the right deck you have the downbeat at 12oclock... how do you make sure that on the left deck it is aligned as well at 12oclock?
DJ Smooth B. 4:23 PM - 25 January, 2008
i set my cuepoint on the left deck also at 12...
hamzter 4:35 PM - 25 January, 2008
Smooth, in relative mode, you don't experience any drift?

since I mostly scratch, I spend a lot of time in Absolute mode, and don't experience drift from what I can tell.
nik39 4:40 PM - 25 January, 2008
hamzter, there is no drift in relative mode either... since V1.6 I think.

yup, the drift is a solved problem. I didn't recognice any drift since over a year
hamzter 5:30 PM - 25 January, 2008
right on... and the cue points don't get triggered in relative mode unless the vinyl is playing right?
nik39 5:37 PM - 25 January, 2008
You can also trigger them with the vinyl stopped, if thats your question. However, you wont hear any sound obviously as the record is stopped ;)

this is a must for me. i always move my marker to 12 o'clock first and then hit the cue point.

this is a bad habit for you bro.
djmoneyd425 9:23 PM - 26 January, 2008
^^^bad habit to RELY on the waveforms, but the visuals can be very useful.

so should I be looking at the waveform when I scratch?
djmoneyd425 10:40 AM - 27 January, 2008
fundamentally speaking: you should have your records marked and do everything by ear

-BUT-

The waveforms are there for a reason. Don't be afraid to use them to your benefit.

i use smooth b's method as well, setting cue points from the mixer. the only downside is that the b1-b6 buttons don't always work so sometimes the cue point doesn't set.....in which case if i dont have enough time to scratch preview where im at, ill take a quick glance at the screen to see that the cue is set
DJ Smooth B. 2:35 PM - 27 January, 2008
that's right :-) i try to use the "drop to cue-point" method more often cause of the problems with the buttons...
midihendrix 1:31 AM - 28 January, 2008
yea...

or sometimes i'll just hold the record where i want it and press B1 like 3 or 4 times....as this increases my chances of the button functioning at least once.
nik39 1:33 AM - 28 January, 2008
Hey guys, BTW. I just wrote a small wiki article about how to clean the buttons so that they work again.

After the whole procedure, my buttons feel dope again! No more malfunctioning :)

hey nik, thru all this B1-B6 button and fader cleaning talk I haven't seen anything about whether or not its possible to clean the contacts for the joysticks? my left joystick is starting to get less sensitive when i press it to the left (instant doubles). It seems like i've almost always got to push it left 3 or 4 times before anything happens. seeing as how you're the resident genius i thought you might be able to help me with some info.

Sorry man... I can't help you with that issue :( Probably the best thin is either talk to Rane... or maybe ask around on the forum (new thread) if people came across this issue yet.

Nah, you're mixing things up... the resident genius is AKIEM. He posted the instructions on how to clean the buttons. ;) Did you read his posting about how he modded a SL1 into his TTM56? That was way back when there was no announcement of a TTM57!
G-man NYC 9:35 PM - 31 January, 2008
Cleaning the buttons on your personal 57 is fine but I work at 3 different clubs that have 57's and the buttons are almost useless on all of them.

I carefully sprayed deoxit in them a couple of times which helped a bit but I can't imagine doing this every time is going to be good for the mixer.
djcrxxx 12:02 PM - 16 February, 2008
killa mix smooth!!!did you have your headphones on using the master cue??
DJ Smooth B. 12:13 PM - 16 February, 2008
thanks dude! yes i have always my headphone on...
hmr1979 12:36 AM - 18 February, 2008
Hey Smooth...where did you get those white records? Those look dope as hell. Is that scratch live?
DJ Smooth B. 2:00 AM - 18 February, 2008
i only remmoved the labels, i do this with all my CVs, i hate the smudgy labels. the white records are a special limited thing from rane, they gave them to some selected djs and that's it, there is no way to get them. when my pair is worn out i have to use the regular again...

Smooth B. can you tell me how you set your cue's to trigger at 12?? I can't see how your doing it, I haven't really beat juggled since I went to relative mode because my cues are never on point.

1. move your control vinyl to 12 O'Clock
2. Press the cue button
3. Repeat for second deck

That's all there is to it.
nik39 11:13 PM - 27 February, 2008
What about moving your record to 12oclock and then hitting the cue button as nobspangle said? ;)

nevermind, I watched his video, that's how I was doing it too (still a pain in the ass to me)

I agree.

We need something like "sticker stick", if you copy a track to the other deck it should also respect the sticker position so that they mathc for both decks.
nik39 11:47 PM - 27 February, 2008
This is like the ONLY thing I need for rel mode. I swear.
djcrxxx 12:05 AM - 28 February, 2008
i just get the record stickers spining at the same position THEN load.is that what yall do?

oh and those scratches were annoying, I hope you don't do that much at a club, not a diss, just constructive criticism, might wanna get them cuts a little more tight before putting them on display to the public.

hehe, don't worry i can live with your criticism, of course it's constructive, but i don't scratch that much in a club, i blend most of the songs. i made this video for showing how fast you can mix with SSL and how easy you can beatjuggle with this system....
