Recording in Itch - really quiet

J 4:08 PM - 19 May, 2012
Hi

I have been trying to record in itch and for some reason it comes out really quiet.

I have the little knob next to the record button at about 2 o'clock

The lights on my xone dx are occasionally just tipping into the red

When played back in itch the wave form is tiny

Any ideas?

Regards
J

Headroom, if I'm not mistaken.

recording a bit too soft is good. one simple run of normalize after should do the job.

Hi

Ok, I am new to all this.

How do I adjust the headroom?

And how do I run normalize?

Regards

the headroom you can adjust inside ITCH. options -> playback.
i wouldn't change that to anything else than 0db tho. rule of thumb: always crank up the amp, never the mixer (or the source like ITCH in this case).

normalize is a feature any audio app has. a nice and free one is audacity and of course there're a lot of commercial ones.

i had the same problem , so when i record i have the master on the mixer set to max and it comes out normal volume on the recording

master to max is really not a good idea. just run a simple normalize after and you don't have any risks of peaks for example or killing the dynamics by cutting off the tips.

always record at a slightly lower volume to retain all possibilities afterwards and to avoid peaks and loss of dynamics

Agreed. My recording leveler is always at Noon. I can post process if necessary.

If you want to record low then normalize, record at 24 bits. Otherwise you'll lose bits of information, with loss of definition in the softer sounds like reverb tails et .

Thanks guys, normalise seems to sort it out
