Can mp4 files be edited...

in Final Cut Pro? and then re-saved as mp4s?

or do they have to be DV?

Talk to be me, I don't have FCP yet- just started encoding today

I edited one in I-Movie on my mac yesterday. I took a full movie and cut scenes i wanted into smaller sections then re-bounce them as mp4's again. I think it make have lost some video qauilty though.

okay so... I guess the better question is... "can one edit mp4 files (Video-SL ready) directly, without losing quality?"

what exactly are you trying to edit in the video? if you just want to replace the audio, there are tools that will replace the audio without affecting the video.

What if you want to cut out part of the video....say like a little skit that's in the middle of the video or editing out the end of the video that goes into another video when ripping Promo Only videos with Handbrake. Is there anyway to make changes like that and do a save as without re-encoding?
marx 6:08 PM - 29 January, 2008
nope :(

visualhub
ffmpeg
mencoder/mplayer

lots of tools can replace the audio without affecting the video and you won't lose a generation with a re-encode.

however, the moment you talk about EDITING a COMPRESSED file, you're almost ALWAYS talking about losing a generation when you re-encode the edited video to a new file. Of course there are exceptions, like DV, you can edit DV and save to a new DV file without re-encoding the whole video stream. There are even a few MPEG cutters out there that will let you chop MPEG video somewhat shabbily without re-encoding the whole stream but in general, when you are talking about editing a compressed file, you're talking about losing a generation when you re-encode.

I directly edit MP4 on Joyoshare Media Cutter. It can output the MP4.
