Question about MIDI (not SSL)

yuri 3:00 PM - 6 October, 2005
Hi, Ive been experimenting with ableton for the past few weeks. Id like to start experimenting with it in my mixing setup. Basically at the moment Im looking to send the signal to my 3rd channel for adding elements and samples.

My question is, how can I get a midi clock sent to ableton to sync with? My mixer does not have a midi clock. Is there any type of device I can use for this? Sorry if this is a basic question, Im new to MIDI. Thanks

Hey Yuri - it seems like you don't need to have a midi clock. Midi clock is good for connecting two or more midi devices - you can make one the master which controls the tempo and start/stop etc.

In this case you are only using one midi device - ableton live. The best way to do it would be to tap in the tempo of the track you are playing on Scratch LIVE.

If you want ableton to automatically sync to the music you are playing, there are few devices that can create a midi clock from a music input.
I think the Pioneer EFX 500 has this function.

There are a couple things that can do it. The EFX-500 and 1000 should...like, I'd bet on it. And if they can't, then they suck.

PVDJ makes a couple things that do it, but they cost like $400 for a device that does nothing else - it's a complete ripoff.

The Ecler Nuo5 will also send out a midi clock, as will the Xone:3d if you're in the market for a new mixer. And the Xone will also give you a pretty good (but not perfect) midi controller for Live.

And I'm probably going to be doing the same thing eventually, I just don't have the money to drop on one of those mixers right now.

interesting. Thanks for the responses. I would like a mixer that sends a midi clock, but i am planning on getting the empath rotary so i guess that wont work out. The only other mixer id consider is maybe the nuo 4, but im pretty set on the empath.

Im wondering how good tapping the tempo would work, if im "in the mix" am i really going to have the ability to tap in a tempo? What do you think.

I must say, the effects in ableton are damn cool!

I use my redsound c-loops. It has a pretty good BPM-counter. I use this BPM in ableton and start with the spacebar. If I must adjust something, when I do with the turntable. Forget about any midi-clock. It´s too inaccuratly. I´ve a xone 92 and it has midi-clock and I can also adjust it on the mixer, but the timing is not good enough.

The best solution would be if SSL could send midi clock to Live.

Otherwise, use tap tempo, assign a fader to tempo and give it a range of 10 bpm.
That should be accurate enough

thanks for the tips.. i guess we'll see how it goes

I was wondering about the same thing lately yuri and I saw this on another forum, it might be helpfull I haven't tried it yet...

Quote:

all i do , as ive found this to be most accurate, is to turn on the metronome, tap the bpm button on ableton in time to your tunes. then load up a track and start it on a beat as normal then i just hover the mouse over the bpm readout and use arrow keys up and down to change bpm up or down. if you pressand hold shift you get .1 increments instead of 1 bpm increments. my mixer had a midi out and a push / pull knob but i find my way easier to controll and better for mixing

I think Richie Hawtin uses a cycloops sampler/looper to detect the turntable´s bpm and send that midi clock to Ableton right?
ACME 10:40 PM - 14 October, 2005
no, he uses that as a sampler only - the cycloops has no midi out.

yuri, have you tried running Aleton Live and SSL on the same computer?
