Resume for day jobs -- to include or omit DJing

sacrilicious 8:10 PM - 11 May, 2012
For those of you with day jobs (or common sense in the matter): when forming your day job oriented resume, do you include DJing in work experience, list it as a hobby, or omit it entirely?

It seems like there would be more of a negative connotation than anything, as we're perceived (correctly or not) to be booze hounds and keep late hours.

Omit entirely....unless the job has something to do with music. For example I put it on only once because I was applying for Entercom waaayyyy back in the day. Radio jobs and stuff like that put it in there.

If it's not relevant there's no point.

But say if you were applying for a job at a hotel as event coordinator or something, you could tie in the promotional/organizational aspect of it (if as a DJ you throw your on parties)

Or if it was an AV company, it shows that you have experience with gear (for those of us who have their own set ups or are familiar with old school systems)

And sorry by "old school systems" I meant traditional systems.

I listed DJing as an ongoing job, but listed it with the position title as Events & Promotions Coordinator/Social Media/Webmaster.

However, I would only list that if I was appyling for an Events Coordinator or Social Media Marketing job and if the company would be receptive (laidback fun start-up vs rigid corporate).

It could help if you were appyling to a job that is audio-related.

I listed it when I applied for Monster Cable.

Definitely a +1 to what everyone else has said. If the job is music related in some way then I would include it. Otherwise leave it off entirely.

I actually included it on my resume for my current job at a music game development studio and I know it helped tremendously. Music is engrained in the culture here so they were glad to know that it's an important part of my life.

Was leaning towards omitting and will do so. Thanks for the feedback--only thing had me inclined to keep it is that DJing has been my primary income so it looks like I've been doing a bit less with my time, heh.

I put it as a hobby. It's a cool conversation stater in interviews, you'll for sure get asked about it. You can probably relate it to client service somehow.

It was on my resume for public accounting, probably should have said that. It typically only takes up one line at the very end of my resume.

i work at a young startup and i put it under hobbies (radio show, etc). worked out pretty nicely, as my boss ended up being a dj of 20 years! we just went b2b at a company party last week, super fun
