First time playing Nu Disco on a House Set: Mixing/Transitioning? Experiences?

ruthless deejay 10:40 PM - 9 May, 2012
Nu disco is usually slow, around 120 BPMs mostly and I havent played Nu Disco in a Club or Bar before so i dont know how they will respond to it either but i only plan on playing the best nu disco tracks so they'll actually appreciate it. The problem is how do you introduce it to the crowd? Transitioning tips? Throw some madeon in first perhaps? also i'd like to hear your experiences as well when you first played Nu disco in a House Set.

Share ur knowledge
Thanks!

Blend it with something that the crowd are familiar with.
phonze 2:36 PM - 10 May, 2012
I normally play it to open the night. if you're going to throw it in the middle of the night when you're already playing progressive/top 40 house then that does sound tricky. Throw in some disco house first (think Duck Sauce, Solidisco, etc.) then transition towards it.

what kind of club do you play at? and how do they respond to nu disco?
phonze 4:07 PM - 10 May, 2012
most people just treat it as background music till I can get to the progressive/top 40 stuff. I play different bars/lounges every once in a while, but not really "music lovers" type of crowd. More just kids that want to get drunk and dance.
Dax 12:36 PM - 12 May, 2012
i play nu-disco all the time, but i play at clubs that play it.
find some remixes/edits of tracks they know and start them off that way or just jump in with both feet and hit them with a 30 min mix of stuff you think will go down well.

here's some nu disco mixes of mine you might find the odd remix on one or two of them.

your more than welcome to leave some cloud comments.nice one Redselecter.

Ruthless did you have a listen? you may like the start of Vol5,starts off with a mix of Jose Gonzalez Killing for love by Beatfanatic a track everyone knows but given a Nu-Disco twist.
DJ Remy USA 1:54 PM - 16 May, 2012
man I love this Nu Disco, I normally open with it if Im going to play it at all. check out Miami Horror awesome group check out Chromeo too as well. Anything remixed by black van is normally decent as well. Enjoy playin them nu disco tunes
Mr. Goodkat 6:08 PM - 16 May, 2012
try to use the tracks with vocals, if you are playing to mainstream crowds.

^ good universal point for mixing music the crowd may be unfamiliar with.

Sounds like you're going to open with it which is the best way to go, in my opinion. I open a lot with nudisco and or a "samples" routine of ultimate beats & breaks style tunes to set a nice vibe.
Dax 5:38 AM - 17 May, 2012
look out for some rayko, todd terje,The Revenge or mighty mouse edits

It's perfect opening music, especially if you get some remixes of popular songs from any time period.

Some of my favorite artists for Nu Disco type stuff: Lenno, Justin Faust, Gigamesh, Madeon, Miami Horror, Fred Falke, The Knocks, Oliver, Grum, Russ Chimes.

Definitely some others too but if you just check out their soundclouds you can't go wrong.

dont forget matt hughes & miguel campbell

i wonder tho if itll be appealing to a top40 crowd

I kind of look at Nu Disco as that music nobody else listens to but other DJ's, that's why I love it. It's great to play along with some classic soul/funk/disco/rnb stuff as it blends in pretty well and people think you are playing cool obscure disco music when in fact it's a chromeo/gigamesh/etc. track.
Mr. Goodkat 8:47 PM - 18 May, 2012
nu disco is going the way of downtempo i.e. hotel lobby's and 'indie' chain restaurants playlists.

i heard todd terje 'ragysh' at chipotle yesterday.

Still really dig it regardless and have a deep collection.

guys ive seen or opened for that play nu disco/house sets that you should go see(in the last 6 months)

u-tern
flight facilities
aeroplane
the twelves
plastic plates
cassian

Definitely. From my experience, generally people aren't aware of nu disco as a genre, but they are familiar with some songs that would be classified as it, they just didn't know it. I always have people asking me about the songs because they really like it since it has really good vibes, kind of a fusion between 80s/pop/disco/funk/progressive house type deal, so a lot of people can relate to it in some way. I have gotten so many friends hooked on nu disco more than any other genre. They just all seem to love it after being exposed.

As for a Top 40 crowd, I say go for it and see what peoples reactions are. My guess is a lot of head nodding/foot tapping. It makes for good background, fun mood setting music while people are starting to drink and get drunk.
DJ Remy USA 2:18 PM - 19 May, 2012

its a good track, i had it when it came out. it was just really weird, because whomever programs music at chipotle has really good taste. i was also a big thievery corp fan and that was the first time i heard it outside of a lounge/club/hotel bar was at chipotle.

inspector norse is the current terje track that i play currently. i like how it goes into disco overdrive around 3:30

I'm dyslexic so spelling and grammar are not one of my strong points, but your right we need an edit button.

inspector norse is a great record,i can see that staying in my playlist for a long time.a record i feeling big time at the moment is "Pachanga Boys - Time " more on a deep house tip but works well for end of the night,it's 15 minutes long so you need to be brave to play it early, but i think it's a magical piece of music.

whats chipotle ? a club/bar ? I'm in the UK and haven't heard of it here.

I'm really digging Dj Kue "Dynamite"

it has a sample of EWF's Boogie Wonderland, and it takes some lines from the movie Black Dynamite.

nice track, but thats actually disco/filter house not nu disco. kue did a couple other disco/filter house songs like that.

I'll check it. I've got a mostly nu disco mix coming out in October
sacrilicious 7:55 PM - 15 September, 2012
Very nice tracks but I wouldn't call that nu disco. I think your description "Cosmic Disco" is much more apt.
Dax 8:23 AM - 16 September, 2012
thanks,
so what do you call nu-disco?
sacrilicious 4:43 PM - 17 September, 2012
Stuff more in the style of Aeroplane, Classixx, Oliver (and U-Tern), Poolside, Breakbot, Tensnake. Generally a little slower and a more sparkly production style. Or at least that's the style I'm into
sacrilicious 4:50 PM - 17 September, 2012
Also: Bag Raiders, Miami Horror, Cut Copy, some Chromeo, Grum, Shook, The Twelves, Fred Falke and Alan Braxe, and a lot of other guys listed above
DJ Remy USA 5:45 PM - 17 September, 2012
Nu disco to me is anything that has elements of 80s synthesizers as apart if the production. I like the sparkly tunes with the smooth digital baselines and either a chick singing or some guy who sounds like he's crying...Breakbot comes to mind

i love aeroplane caramellas, one of my all time nu-disco fav's and Tensnake make some great music.
but the rest of your list wouldn't be played at a nu-disco night here in london.more at an electro pop night.

you might like this,i have no idea why but i cant stop playing it.

i guess its really house, but to me it dates back a couple of years, when Hercules & Love Affair, Azari & III (recently signed to dim mak?), and others really started using the older elements of chicago house(ie m1 organs((show me love)), piano breakdowns, and lots of drum machine work(mainly 909).

of course its officially 'house' but to me it what makes it different, is that most are staying very true to house music roots, uses soulful vocals(sparingly or short choruses) and are generally new artists. Also, its closer to deep house than tech/electro/big room house.

i don't know, to me it has a very distinctive style and subset of people that play it. I label it that mainly for my crates in ssl, because of the sound and where i would play it.

i would say these are good examples of what im talking about
