i like those subs they look like they hit hard. is EV a good brand that produces quality sound? i hear a lot about qsc and jbl but not about EV. you think the zxa5 is a better choice than the kw153's?
Joee
6:16 PM - 9 May, 2012
the zxa5, can NOT be beat by any other speaker in it's price, size or weight range, you don't hear alot about it cause it's price puts it out of reach of most dj's
i use them they are a killer box, the bass they put out for a 15inch two way is crazy

I have 2 kW 122 and am thinking of buying one KW181. I think that would be enough. Remember, party people dont want to music blasting. Music blasting equal COPS showing up and shutting down the party.

2 kw122 & 1 kw181 would be enough for 150, but what's he going to do when he has a bigger event? spend more money?
2 zxa5 & 1 vrx918sp will sound better than the qsc setup 2 vrx918sp's = WOW it's small compact & can be scaled up or down as needed

I also own the zxa5's and most djs will or should buy the 90 because of the wider range. The 60 is design to allow 2 speaker per side. Most mobile djs simply dont need or require that much power or spl. Now if most of your gigs are 500+ the 60 degree evzxa5 with 2 per side is the one for you.
Btw I also suggest the EVzxa5 + jbl vrx918sp combination. After alot of research, testing and demoing its the set up I chose to go with also. Its High quality in a small mobile package that cant be beat. Just to give you an idea of how loud the zxa5 is, I have a pair of qsc k12s and 1 ev is equal to if not louder than 2 qsc k12s. I love my qsc k12s but the EV is in a totally different league.

That just sounds like a BAD choice in venue not speakers volume. Ive never had a promoter or party people tell me to turn down the music. If anything they want me to turn it UP....lol
So if cops are shutting down your parties, the venue is the problem.
Remember you can always turn down loud speakers...... but you cant turn low speakers up with out blowing them up.....:) Having the option is better.

The evzxa5 is a special order speaker so most places can order them but they wont have them as floor models or in stock. Their not your standard commercial speaker.....

+1 on the EV's. When I upgraded from the QSC HPR122i's, I couldn't believe how much louder this ZXa5 was in comparison. It made the HPR12" sound anemic in overall loudness and bass response. 2x a standard GC or SAsh speaker's volume is definitely correct.
Buy once, buy right... EV.
GC's will not carry EV's because like Joee mentioned, they're out of most DJ's budget range. I've seen them at my local Sam Ash but in the passive form (ZX5). That entry fee scares most away as most people can't fathom $3000 for a pair of powered 2-way tops. When you see what you get in terms of output and sound quality, you'll be happy you made the choice. You'll NEVER be looking to upgrade your tops again because there really isn't a reasonably priced 2-way powered top out there to beat'em...

That's exactly what I was going to say. Haha.
I've actually been looking at getting new tops as well so thanks pdidy, Joee, and Gaffle for chiming in. Looks like I'll be getting a pair of ZXA5's.
To answer the OP's question, I currently have EON 515's (first gen I believe) and 518 subs. I've found this combo is good for 150-200 people but if you can afford it then it's definitely better to spend the extra money on what these guys recommended. From what they're saying you won't have to upgrade again for a long time.

Since you're supplying your owning here the important part here is that any damage is on you. Honestly I'd go QSC'S with everything. Their customer service rules, if anything goes wrong you get a new replacement back in a day or two.

Are your Yorkvilles subs or tops? Do you run your Yorks and Bose all together including the Bose bass bins? Like he mentions, I would only look to the Bose L1's for wedding rrceptions and ceremonies.
I think the Bose unique look alone would make brides 'think' one's system is or sounds top notch. The L1's have there place but they're not for general mobile DJ use IMO.

Not really. I got to partially test them at levels that would annoy my neighbors for a few minutes. The sub hits tight/clean. I only have one and convinced that I want another. I have shipping wound pics. EV doesn't know how to ship speakers and I need to exchange the vrx. I really like the powercon daisy chain feature, that's a new feature for me.

did you buy 1 or 2 ev zxa5s, was the vrx damaged in shipping ?
yes a minimum of 2 vrx918sp is ideal considering how loud the zxa5 can get.
they usually give you some extra powercons so you can make your own spares if you like and its very easy to do....Watchwww.youtube.com

Tough call... Your budget is in a tough spot....
You can spend a lot less and get good sound, especially for 150 people, or you can spend a lot more and blow people's minds with the quality.
Depending on a lot of things:
1. Budget (which we know).
2. Size/shape of typical venue.
3. What you carry your gear in.
4. Other factors - type of music, volume, other equipment needs (live sound for example), etc.
For weddings I'm a huge fan of the Bose L1 Model 1. They're on sale right now. As a cylindrical line array they offer unparalleled coverage and great throw. But they do lack the deep bottom end 'thump' a lot of people like. For that you'll need to add a sub which I'd run off the secondary sub output on the L1. (The 'why' isn't important - they just don't have the impact that folded horn or even traditional subs - and even though it's by design, it's not really important if your expectations are still pounding bass you need a secondary sub with the Bose L1).
For a bumping sub I'd look at the Yorkville LS701P or something similar.
You can go cheaper and good good quality and coverage...
Or you can go much more expensive with something like D&B Audioteknik (which I absolutely LOVE).
In short, for 150 people, you don't even need 1000 watts - and most basic systems will do a great job. I've used a B-52 Matrix 1000 V2 for up to 150 people or so.
At the end of the day, what you get and what I'd recommend varies greatly based on a lot of factors.
