Serato Video General Discussion

Talk about Serato Video and Video-SL.

Feature Request - Power Point Support

DJ Quartz 5:47 PM - 23 April, 2012
I found a use for this on Friday because we were doing a carnival setup and I used a mini video switch at the first one as well so I could setup another laptop to display a power point presentation.

I realized after that if I could show a power point file right in Serato Video, it would eliminate the second laptop and extra setup gear, cabling and setup time.

Since I was already playing the music, this would be a power tool if it could.
skinnyguy 9:00 PM - 23 April, 2012
can't you just install powerpoint on your serato computer? run audio via headphone out? that still eliminate another computer.
DJ Quartz 11:30 PM - 23 April, 2012
I'm trying to eliminate extra applications running, etc.

I mean I'm playing the audio manually, not in the actually presentation. So if I could just show the PPT slideshow right in Serato VIdeo itself is what I'm talking about.
popnwave 11:59 PM - 23 April, 2012
Running power point viewer from Microsoft would have the same results wouldn't it?

blogs.office.com

One other program to not need a 2nd computer isn't that big of a deal. Just like you aren't likely to see CD+G support for Karaoke I'd think PP support is pretty low down any list as well.
phatbob 12:10 AM - 24 April, 2012
You on Windows or Mac? Keynote on OSX can export the presentation as a QT movie, you could play that in SL.
skinnyguy 1:05 AM - 24 April, 2012
ooh, that's clever....
DJ Quartz 1:15 AM - 24 April, 2012
Interesting, I do have a Mac Mini so I could do that, thanks for the tip.
DJ Quartz 1:18 AM - 24 April, 2012
It would still be nice not to convert and just launch a file in SV though.
SeriousCyrus 2:35 PM - 24 April, 2012
I thought PP presentations went out with the 90s.
DJ Quartz 9:40 PM - 24 April, 2012
People still use them at Weddings and Fund Raisers. How is that statement even helpful in anyway?
SeriousCyrus 10:11 PM - 24 April, 2012
Gotta be better, cheaper and easier ways to make slide shows, i haven't been sent a ppt in many years, not many people use it much outside of business meetings. Don't reckon it would be worth the hassle when most have moved to newer and cheaper things, powerpoint as a popular format to share is dead.

Tbh, you'd be better off converting them to something relevant.

workplace and academia seem to still rely on it quite heavily... and your average Joe making a presentation for the event he hired a dj for

It's a valid point for a feature request, but I'd rather not see software bloated with something like this. Best bet would be to find a way to convert to video format. Keynote is a great program, as phatbob said, or even using screenflow or iShowU to capture the presentation in a dry run prior to the event.
DJ Quartz 10:27 PM - 24 April, 2012
You guys do realize I'm asking for the just playback not any editing capabilities. Just the same as displaying an image.

Not everything needs to be in a movie format and add decoding overhead, etc, etc.

When was the last time a friend sent you a ppt? Facebook, flickr, photo sharing sites, anything is better than expecting your mates to have a compatible version of office, even in business, it shouldn't be overused. Most companies only use them internaly, it looks real bad sending that stuff out to clients and expecting them to have a viewer.

If it were me, i'd be asking for the source material and tell them not to waste their time, but i guess it's not something i have to deal with djing

I agree, usually a pdf is sufficient, but if you want animations or music/sound, ppt is the easiest for your average person

well if you're already playing a video set, having a video file is the most straightforward

yes, but I'm assuming you would want to play back a slideshow (i.e. more than one static image)

A little more on why ppt should die.

Of all the formats for displaying stuff in video, text or whatever, I would have thought powerpoint would be way down on the list of priorities, it's basically just an annoying way to receive things. Now that there are alternatives to MSOffice, with online tools, flash, acrobat, photo sharing sites, movie editing software, all free or at the fraction of the price, ppt is a doomed format, it's the drmed mp3, an inconvenience that serves little purpose but to keep up the marketshare of MS.

Simple animations maybe, music/sound, it's like going to a website where the music plays automatically, it used to be cool for like 5 minutes, now it's just fracking annoying. I think most people nowadays would use something like imovie to make a slideshow with music, then you can export it to a movie supported by youtube.

I would hope so in most cases, but not everyone has a Mac, not everyone can make a movie, not everyone wants to post it to youtube.

I watch 4 ppt presentations everyday (in class)... and I'm sure people at HR meetings all over the world do the same. It has a market. Doomed for social networking, yes, but there are other reasons to make presentations.

You also need to consider copyright and privacy regulations, a lot of the presentation content in academia and business can't be put on to Flickr.

Regardless... lol... to stay on track to some degree. I have done events on more than one occasion where people have asked for a ppt presentation to be displayed on the screen at some point during the evening. I can see where the OP is coming from.

However, at this point, I would prefer to see feature and quality upgrades in SV. Maybe by then ppt WILL be a dead format.
skinnyguy 11:33 PM - 24 April, 2012
it's probably easier to flip thru slides on a ppt than scrubbing thru a video file during a presentation.
DJ Quartz 2:09 AM - 25 April, 2012
^^ How true

To answer the previous statement about the flipping slides, that is correct because no one is going to give you a one slide presentation.
SeriousCyrus 8:55 AM - 25 April, 2012
Damn PPT users.

As a suggestion, you could make a slide show viewer in Quartz Composer fairly easily, with ME you could assign MIDI controls to advance the slides. I'm still playing around with quartz files in video sl, pretty sure you could do the same thing with a little extra work using OSC or QC's own MIDI controls, not as simpe as ME's MIDI mapping, but not exactly hard.
DJ Quartz 2:03 PM - 25 April, 2012
Quartz files are for Mac only.

If I wanted to run MacOS I could but I'm not interested. I have my MacMini for developing my iphone/ipad/ipod app and that's all I needed it for.

The only difference is the operating system as far as I'm concerned. The hardware is basically the same and I'm not switching my whole platform for one file type.

Not to mention my current laptop is killer and I can't even house two hardrives in a MacPro 17" which with what I need will cost minimum $3000.

Forget it!

If I had a dollar for every guy that said this then switched to Mac and wondered why he waited so long...

^ I'm just playing Quartz, but really, this is a cliche line around here
DJ Quartz 3:11 PM - 25 April, 2012
Ha ham it's all good.

Honestly, though when I got my 1737, I followed the specs of the Macbook Pro at the time just to ensure compatibility.

But the price vs features was no comparison.

I have every connection port needed, backlit keyboard, HD Led display (1920x1200), dual internal hardrives, core2duo (64-bit) @ 2.4ghz, and 8gb or 16gb ram limit. Not to mention excellent cooling design.

I recently went to Windows 7 64-bit because I was having major database problems due to the 32-bit memory addressing limit.

Since then it's like having a brand new laptop, so honestly can't see me upgrading for a least another three years if necessary.

Six years to get out of a laptop is a very good run.
