Xone:DX or NS6

jaeros 3:25 AM - 17 April, 2012
I recently bought the Xone:DX and absolutely love it...but I'm realizing more and more that I miss having decent jogwheels/platters (came off of using 1200s) for some casual scratching.

I bought the Xone:DX for its construction, size, and sound quality. I have been thinking about selling it in order to purchase a Numark NS6. Just looking at the specs, I think I would really enjoy its larger platters, ease of looping controls, and external mixing option.

I have not demoed a NS6 yet, but from what I've read, there seems to be a big issue with Individual channel VU meters (never really used them in the past...DJ'd by ear) and the pitch resolution. I could deal with the former, but I absolutely must have accurate pitch. I seldom use the SYNC button, and I still enjoy beatmatching manually (I really can't get used to the rotary pitch knob on the DX). The platters look like they would do for my style of DJing (mainly house, with some slight scratch effects).

Any thoughts would be much appreciated in which avenue I should stay in or go.

Thanks!

You really need to demo an NS6.

A lot of users reckon the pitch is fine, but I suspect most of them are hip-hop/mixed format DJs. I always approach a pitch control from a House perspective and when I demoed the NS6 I just found it to not be as accurate as, say, a CDJ on the +/-6% resolution, which is my yardstick.

You might want to try a DDJ-S1 too, and there are plenty of threads on here discussing the various merits of those two compared to each other.

I have both an NS6 and a Xone:DX - it depends what type of music you spin and what you need for each event. For EDM I really like spinning on the Xone:DX for Hip-Hop the NS6. This weekend I'll be using the Xone:DX for my event.

I would really think about if you REALLY need the scratching, if you really don't then you may not need the NS6. I am in no way steering you away just offering some food for thought and maybe controlling that ITCH to buy another controller.....as for me, I buy them all...lol

Hey guys, thanks for the advice!

I had originally written off the Pioneer DDJ-S1, but I may also be looking at that. A couple of things that irk me about the controller might not be too bad (no booth out, only 2 channels, no standalone mixer) since I don't use more than 2 channels and the DX isn't a standalone mixer.

@DJ MDX: the DX is great for EDM, but I also miss the use of a pitch slider. I'm still working with the rotary knob, I just felt it more easy to control pitch with a standard slider. SYNC is a wonderful tool, but since it is not 100% accurate (and I'm not a big fan of setting up beatgrids...call me lazy, I guess lol) it is tough to just toss a song in "on-the-fly" and adjust with the rotary knob. I do understand why that put a knob rather than a slider, though (easier for 4 channel mixing).

I think the rotary knob is far more precise than a slider - especially the NS6 slider. In case you don't know you can push down and twist to get larger steps in rotation ;-)

Also in regard to booth - I absolutley need booth - I did a gig this weekend that I would have been in the $hits if I did not have booth output. The DJ booth is kinda away from the floor and any speakers you could actually hear with clarity.

There are some that say you can do this many different ways but unless you plan on reaching out somewhere else to keep adjusting as needed it just is not worth not having booth out to me - much better tactile control :-)
