Serato Video General Discussion

Talk about Serato Video and Video-SL.

Licencing

jbunks 6:49 PM - 17 December, 2007
Obviously you need a product key to activate the new video software. I currently carry a spare laptop and hard drive to every gig, that way I can swap systems and be back up and running within a matter of minutes. With the licencing (which I completely understand) I won't be able to do this. Is there going to be any potential work around or will I have to but two licences, one of which I might never use.

I work for a software company and if customers want to install on more than one machine we issue them with a dongle which holds the product key. Will something like this be available?
marx 7:00 PM - 17 December, 2007
in the manual its says u have to deactivate it first....then activate on the machine you want to use. I'm assuming u have to be online to do this.
jbunks 10:47 PM - 17 December, 2007
Yeah that's what I thought. Even if you can get an internet connection if the machine you've been using has got too hot and won't start it doesn't help either!

Most professional programs allow you to install the software on a backup unit. I hope its the same here. I have been djing for years and alwayse have a backup to anything that would stop me from performing if it went out.

The ttm57 should be the license holder.
-----------------------------------------
If you are doing a gig and your main video laptop goes flying off the table thanks to some drunk guest, you should be able to pull another laptop with video-sl installed and plug it into the TTm57 you were just using. If the fist laptop was broken, an "authorization" transfer can't take place.
Dj_KaGeN 12:16 AM - 10 January, 2008
the same could be said about a beer filled mixer.....
marx 2:41 AM - 10 January, 2008
hehehe.

i agree with lajolla. nut the problem with that is anyone would be able to use the pugin if they has a 57. but i still agree with doing it this way because of the fact that computers break. if u think your fucked when it crashes...fthat. your fucked if you can't get the new computer to work because of licensing.
DJ Dub Cowboy 5:43 PM - 10 January, 2008
it should only work if you posted in every thread you read for that day. Must be signed in, no guests...
Dj_KaGeN 6:15 PM - 10 January, 2008
Regardless of how it's going to be handled.. it gonna suck. And dj's will need to be able to have multiple machines that have the license without this being a total pain in the ass..

As for the 57 hosting the code.. That sucks ASS. I roll to my friday night gig that has a 57 sitting there, I have to register THEIR 57?? then I have to UNREG before I leave or I'm fucked when I get home and cannot use my own 57??

FUCK THAT.

I wouldn't mind a small temporary usb dongle. I think Serato uses the iLok dongle for their other plugins that work with pro-tools.

The way I see it working is start Serato, plug in usb dongle for authentication to the video plugin, after it sees it, you can then remove the dongle to plug in your 57 if you're low on usb ports. Then your computer is good until your restart the program or for like 24 hours or something similar.

It looks like they're just doing S/N authentication tho.

+1000 I would love a dongle...

So basically their are gonna trust us and allow two installations per licence or am I reading this wrong?
marx 11:48 PM - 10 January, 2008
cool. just like vdj

Their trust is not required. It sounds like the software will somehow know if two computers ever use it at the same exact time. If that happens, your video-sl serial number is "permanently revoked".

That works for me. No dongle needed.
marx 6:57 AM - 11 January, 2008
right. not likely m8

Yeah we have something like this built into the software we produce. It tracks what parts of the system the user uses and how often, this is then uploaded as an encrypted file the next time an internet connection is available. Guess it will just be the same, but will uploaded times, dates and duration of usage.
marx 6:47 PM - 11 January, 2008
interesting
jbunks 1:06 AM - 12 January, 2008
It will be for those who never use their machine to connect to the internet! :-)
jbunks 5:36 PM - 14 January, 2008
On second thoughts, more often than not, both my laptops will be running video at the same time. At the moment I use to machines and have them both running for whole gig, so if the main one goes down I dont have to sit and wait for the other to boot up.

So that's still not going to address the problem completely. Discounted second licence perhaps? :-)
eder 1:28 AM - 15 January, 2008
it's going to suck if we're going to have to log into the internet to "verify" we only have 2 laptops running it each time we go to use it...
D-Twizzle 1:46 AM - 15 January, 2008
it was already said that you will only need a s/n and that's it. no internet needed, i believe it's an honor system.
DjSylert 3:44 AM - 15 January, 2008
well it seems as tho if you dont have internet running, and no internet authorization necessary, as long as you use it on one comp at a time, your good to use your serial on as many comps as you have! i see problems, like people trying to sell there activation codes on ebay if they dont use there laptops on the internet and other strange bootlegging going on...they have to have some way around this
marx 4:34 AM - 15 January, 2008
this is tru. but what will happen is when a serail number has been compromised, that serial # will no longer be available for updates. Which with this program is NOT GOOD. Unless you like having a crack serial # with bugs ; )
DjSylert 6:39 AM - 15 January, 2008
haha well we all know this world is full of hackers that try to find ways around anything, i mean if you can get 1000 dollar programs for free like photoshop now a days i would hate to be a company owner selling computer software! i guess thats why they have us buying new laptops every year to actually run the software and uping the specs haha

This is correct. If you want access to future new features, fixes, performance improvements, etc, then don't share your serial with friends or go installing it on a bunch of machines that you'll be using simultaneously.

The system used is not an entirely honour based one, but it will not interfere with your usage or require you to have an active internet connection or any such annoyances.
