There is no seperate control box (the name is SL1 by the way) you can buy. What you get in the store is basically the SL1, two vinyls, two CDs and one USB cable. The software is for free.

I have noticed that most dj's that use serato use an apple laptop. Is an Apple laptop the best laptop to use with Serato. And how much memory is needed to support Serato effectively.I have a new Sony Vaio laptop and I'm trying to see if it will be good to use with Serato.

If your laptop is new then use that it should be great. Memory requirements vary.
For Windows XP you can run fine on 512MB but consider upgrading to 1GB especially if you have a very big library (>20000 tracks). For Vista you probably need to double those figures.

If you want to run scratch live with a low buffersize(good for dj who scratch) I would say you need 2GB. I ran scratch live with my 1GB desktop, but when I had the buffer set lower then 5 I kept getting USB-dropouts. Now I have a Macbook (2.0ghz dualcore) with 3 GB and its runs perfect at the lowest settings.

hmmm... Weird... Also when you do fast chirpflares or stabs?? I could scratch with the buffer on 5, but when I did very fast stabs and stuff like that I could hear a delay in the sound. When I did fast stabs they started to sound like chirps. I started doubting myself, but when I used regular vinyl I had no problem.
