the system preferences are up to your personal taste. none of the settings will help performance in ssl.

there are some recommended apps that you should install tho. there is a thread on here somewhere but at minimum you should install:

Caffeine
SMCFanControl

there are a ton of other useful apps that i use as well:

quicksilver
paragon
ControlPlane
MediaRage
ScreenFlow
DropBox
EverNote

Caffeine stops your screen from dimming and going to sleep.
SMCFanControl allows you to manually or automatcially set your fan speeds
quicksilver let's you launch apps or perform commands with keystrokes. <-very powerful
paragon lets you read/write NTFS
ControlPlane lets you perform some action automatically based on some response <dope
MediaRage is the de facto ID3 tag for mac
ScreenFlow lets you record your screen
DropBox personal fileshare on the cloud.
EverNote notes, organization on steroids

Are there precautions to Caffeine or SMCFanControl?

Nope. Straight forward. Just install and use.
