Serato Video General Discussion

Talk about Serato Video and Video-SL.

Will a HP Pavilion g6-1331ea comfortably run Video-SL?

Alchemy 12:35 PM - 10 February, 2012
As the title suggests, I was just wondering if the HP Pavilion g6-1331ea would comfortably run Video-SL? The specs are:

CPU Type: AMD Quad-Core
CPU Number: A6-3420M
CPU Cores : 4
CPU Speed: 1.6 GHz
Internal Memory: 6144 MB
Graphics Card : AMD Radeon HD 6620G
Graphic Card Memory Size: 1024MB

I know 1.6 Ghz is below the recommended spec but does the fact its a quad-core compensate for that?

Of course it would but maybe with 15 FPS or lower and no Effectes available...

Beside your CPU power, shared graphic card memory is totaly no go for VSL...
If you want to run VSL on PC you will need some more CPU power and a dedicated graphics card with 1GB + of Ram ( imho )...

Fair enought. ThoughI thought AMD Radeon HD 6620G was a dedicated card?
Alchemy 1:06 PM - 10 February, 2012
But a quick google shows me otherwise!

Forget the GPU, AMD processors are not supported full stop.

DO NOT buy that machine to use with Scratch Live, let alone VSL/SV.

If your gunna go for an HP, try the Envy series. It's kind of their version of a macbook pro. I've got an HP Envy 15 and it runs SSL and VSL but I wouldn't say comfortably because of problems with the old VSL plugin. Hopefully things get better with the new Serato Video coming soon.

Yeah I hope Serato Vido makes it easier for PC users to mix video. I'm hearing more hype about Virtual DJ these days though, perhaps because VDJ 8 is coming out soon,as I understand it VDJ runs video on PC much easier then Serato does? Anyway how do these specs measure up for Video-SL? T'd struggle to even afford a refurbished mac book, this is pretty much my limit :(

2nd generation Intel® Core™ i5-2430M processor
4GB memory for top system performance
500 GB Hard Drive for storing all your digital files

AMD Radeon HD 6490M Graphic

I presume you are exaggerating here? AMD is on the recommended spec list for VSL. Surely there would be a lot more complaints if everyone with an AMD graphics card was struggling?
DJ Soup 9:59 AM - 11 February, 2012
He's not exaggerating about AMD processors. It's best to stick with intel and not test your luck. VDJ does run video better on Windows than VSL but VDJ's audio engine is garbage IMO.

How fast is that i5 processor you listed and how much ram does that Radeon graphics card come with. You want at least 1GB of dedicated ram for the graphics card.

Check again. AMD PROCESSORS are not recommended. I'm not talking about GPUs.

Sorry phatbob, my bad. As you can tell I'm not very technicaly minded!
DJ Soup > the i5 processor 2.4 Ghz. The Graphics card has 512Mb though, you reckon that won't be enough then?

Oh and one extra laptop to throw into the mix.

Dell Inspiron:
Processor 2nd generation Intel® Core™ i5-2450M processor (2.50 GHz, 3M cache) with Turbo Boost 2.0 up to 3.10
Operating System Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit
Display 15.6" (40 cm) High Definition (1366X768) WLED with True-Life
Memory1 4GB2 Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz
Hard Drive 640GB1 SATA hard drive (5400RPM)
Video Card 1 GB nVidia GeForce GT 525M
phatbob 12:22 PM - 11 February, 2012
The Dell will be better. No guarantees with Windows machines though.

You're always taking a chance.

Personally, I'd suggest if you really want to do video, you save up a while and get a MacBook Pro. Even if it takes 6 months, it's worth it.
TealONE 2:01 PM - 11 February, 2012
That Dell machine should do the job... Im using a Samsung RF511 with i5 and GT 540M with 6GB ram... Video SL runs with constant 60-80 FPS @ latenzy 5... BUT !!

It took me about 2 Months to figure out the perfect settings for Graphic Driver, System Config. (especially CodecPacks) and Serato Settings... It wont be plug and play and you realy have to be willing and able to tweak the system... if you have problems tweaking the system you should realy stick to mac, should be easier... if you want to save some money and have "some" time, take a pc ;)

There ya go... 6 months waiting to get a Mac, or 2 months of hassle to make a Wintel machine work... ;-)

I don't know a dj thats running a windows machine successfully running video..just for the record. Mac's are simply built to handle more. Macbook Pro i7, Nvidea video card, Intel HD graphics..your lookin at the best quality possible. I'd save if i were u or buy a refurb if your serious about mixing video. I'm telling you this for your own good.
DJ Tecniq 9:57 PM - 15 February, 2012
Oh and there have been issues with AMD processors running scratch & vsl. Just search the forum and find out.
