2.3.3. rescanning files?

hi
i recently moved up to 2.3.3 and it has stuffed me up twice during gigs because when i try to load an mp4, it says "writing tags, please wait a few moments then try again" and that error never goes away. it only happened on about 2 files out of about 120 played in a 4 hour set, but it really annoyed me, and messed up a few mixes. it also seems to come up with "writing tags" when i load most of my tracks, even though i re-scanned all the files when i upgraded from 2.2. it seems to not be remembering the wave forms each time too....
is anyone else getting similar experiences?
my setup is
serato 2.3.3.
ME 1.7.2
TTM 57SL
Macbook pro i7 2.4
8gig ram
os X 10.6.8
i wonder if it's because i'm still on snow leopard? does 2.3.3 work better with tiger? i think i'll go back to 2.2 which (other than having to scan files in 1.9) was working very well....
thanks
tom

tiger?
i'd think 233 works better with snow leopard than tiger.

this could be because you scanned in 192, if i read that correct. or perhaps you were just saying you used 1.9 to scan when you had 2.2.
you are better off scanning ahead of time in 233.
also, occasionally 233 will rewrite the previous videos tags after loading the next one.
so you are going to have that.
not remembering the wave forms...it's a shot in the dark and probably has absolutely nothing to do with it, but do you have any ovb or xml files associated with those videos?
and you may want to start a help ticket.

thanks for the considered response. you are correct in assuming i was talking about scanning in 1.9 when using 2.2. that's why i'm confused, i rescaned all my files in 2.3.3, and i still get this "rewrite tag" thing... why is that?
also, occasionally 233 will rewrite the previous videos tags after loading the next one.
so you are going to have that.
.
why is this i wonder?
but do you have any ovb or xml files associated with those videos?
.
yes i do!! there does seem to be .xml data for each file! hmmmm it would be a massive job to delete my serato library and completely re-import and rebuild all my crates and so on..... blech, are you suggesting there could be some corruption in these old scan files or something? is that what an xml file is?
thanks so much for your help. i'd do a help request but i'm a bit bashful because i'm a staunch ME user....

Same issue her - Serato ! we need help on this one
All the videos i buy in Itunes are doing this. When i load a Itunes M4v it starts up "building" the track in serato each time......... :-(
Have "scan and analyse" the track but still the same issue....

Its a total crap shoot if Itunes videos are "serato ready"
unless your checking the specs before you try to play them...theres a good chance
that they might be suspect

2.3.3 has a different method of processing metadata vs ANY older version. IMO, 2.3.3 is the most stable version since 1.9.2. Yes I would suggest re-scanning your entire library to ensure that it wont re-write these files during a performance. It took me a few days to do, but Im very pleased with the results.

i think in a perfect world (as most of us should be rocking 3-4 backups)
the move would be to run a backed up drive with 2.3.3 and start from scratch.
which we all know would suck because all of the files that rely on metadata to store
track into, and such we have to do all over again.
main reason being, if you do goto 2.3.3 and rescan everything
no one can promise if you decide its not for you and you go back to 1.9.2 (with the files you scanned in 2.3.3) its going to play nice with those files...
It stands to reason, it wouldnt given the different writting engine.
like ive mentioned before, for me personally, for every 1 person running it sucessfully,
I know 2 that arent.
but now im starting to wonder if they deleted all the MD files and such... and did a
TRUE strt from scratch library intergration

I deleted my entire crate library, closed SSL, and started fresh. So far no problems what so ever

Have "scan and analyse" the track but still the same issue....
i am not a techmate so this is not the official word.
I would,
have a backup (personally 2 is my minimum).
convert the M4v files to mp4
delete all the metadata.
rescan all your files (in sections, not all at once).
with 192 and the mp4 that has ovb and xml files associated with it, i have to use mpeg streamclip to ge rid of them. something about them makes me lose loops, cues and such.
no idea if that is what you are experiencing or not.
and start a help ticket if you have not.

Changed the .m4v extension to .mp4 and it fixed that glitch for me. VSL and ME still played the new files just fine. I used an Automater script I found online to do it for ~450 videos. No problems since.

+1 and my back ups everything runnin like butter ....I think some people don't regonize the importances of having all your overviews built before playing the track

Do you mean ENTIRELY wiping the existing metadata files and starting over that way? I have all of my videos sorted by tags in the genre field, so this would be a BIG chore... but one that I will take on if it will run smoother than 2.1/2.2.
But that also means fixing all of the janky track names that I had already fixed, resetting cue points, and ALL of that, right?

Save time by highlighting each genre, dragging them (copying) to another drive, and work on them in genre batches. If you use something like Media Rage you can do tags quite quickly that way.

That makes sense, but most of my videos have multiple tags. For example, Regulate would be like [90s [HH [WST [OSK so that I can find it quickly during 90s, Hip Hop, WestCoast, or OldSkool sets...
Just thinking out loud here. :) Thanks for the suggestion, I'll have to figure out a workflow and this may help!

Oh well, you're screwed then... ;o)
I basically rebuilt my whole library again for 2.3.3.
Hopefully once you get your files sorted properly so they aren't creating XML and OVB files you won't have to do it again for a long time!
Smart Crates FTW, by the way...

Time to get a new battery for my MBP, looks like I have something to occupy my time on my bus commute for a while lol.
Sucks, because I JUST got everything tagged a few months ago. >.<

Ive done the re-write all the info 2x now..
with that writting change last time (where ssl will write the info to the mp4, rather than a MD file.... and if the mp4 refuses the info, it will default to the older method of tag writting)
I had retagged everything in SSL... days and days.
and then of course you STILL HAVE THOSE FILES no matter what you do, you cannot alter them...
going through all that again...ugh.
I might just delete everything SSL wise.
and drop everything into MP# tag and write it all there (mp3 tag often has success writing tag info where others have failed)

The 62 manual is out.
Nothing new in 2.4.
Remains to be seen what's in SV.

good that's all i wanted to hear. We don't need anything "new" they need to tweak the old features first and really get this software back to being solid and reliable! the hell with new features man..what else do we need fucking auto sync...

Fix what's already there. I could care less if I see another SSL update with "NEW FEATURES". I would like to see 2.5/2.6 and so on to be updates that just FIX all the little bugs that get put on the back burner. We have new mixers now, Awesome. Serato Video (even though I most likely won't touch it), Great. Video support for Itch (which will be a lot of Serato's "help team" home now), Ok. Now just work on getting it working like SSL used to be (1.8, 1.9 series)

I would like to know if 2.3.3 way of writing files will be the new way or at least for awhile. This would really suck to have to have to re-tag your library every couple of releases.

I think a couple of years is a pretty good run. 2.3.3 is the first overhaul since the 1.9.2 era.
