Editing ripped DVDs - best to rip and leave uncompressed first?

Mr Margaret Scratcher 7:38 PM - 7 February, 2012
As it says, I'm going to be grabbing sections of videos from DVD, and also making animations/visuals etc. I'm assuming the best thing to do is to rip them and save them uncompressed, edit together and save, again, uncompressed, and then use handbrake to compress using the VSL preset?
phatbob 7:55 PM - 7 February, 2012
Correct, although you can save a step by just outputting from your NLE with the same settings as the handbrake preset.

Aha... I'm using the sequencer within blender, I'll have an investigate...
Mr Margaret Scratcher 11:51 PM - 7 February, 2012
Soooo Next question - what's the best way to rip DVDs without them being saved compressed?
phatbob 11:55 PM - 7 February, 2012
MacTheRipper. That'll get you Vob files.

Then convert to whatever uncompressed format your NLE can handle.

Excellent, I#ll have an investigate... :)

Don't forget to IVTC them.

IVTC>?

(Editing for the sake of not having capital letters)

This thread (which really should be a sticky): serato.com

Prepare for a long read, but a lot of useful info.

also you can't IVTC in OSX. OSX developers aren't as smart as the windows developers who made shit like virtualdub or avisynth.

You will need windows for the proper tools.

Suits me! #mac-hate ;)

Compressor does an inverse telecine. In the Frame Controls window.

sigh. sorry but compressor cannot properly perform inverse telecine.

it cannot handle material ripped from dvd that have pulldown with a broken cadence which is the majority of music videos not shot in HD.

also the Deinterlacing in Avisynth blows other tools out of the water.

Like I say, suits me fine, I've kept my Dell for 'proper' work - having to use that tiny screen/horrible keyboard and the OS in general generally causes me a fair bit of rage...
