EasyCap as external video live feed via quartz composer?!

Freddy Simple 11:40 AM - 20 January, 2012
Hey,

I read in other threads that there are possibilities to live feed webcam footage via a quartz composer. I downloaded it but it won't work in any other way. Is there the chance to get it let me feed the contents of my Easy Cap video grabber?
Reason: I want to feed my ipad output with visuals live into my dj set without an external video mixer.

Thx

Hey Freddy,

I'm not too familiar with Quartz Compositions sorry. I'll move this to the Video-SL general discussion area though as the other users may have some better input :)

Quartz Composer is free so I'd say hook it up and try. If all you want to do is use the output from your iPad and not VSL, Serato Video, ME etc... you don't need QC... just hook up the output of your iPad to the projector.

Hey Big Wiz,
I also thought about that Option but my Problem is, that i cant swich between Serato and the iPad Output without a Protection dropout with a Blue Screen on my projector and i would like to use Seratos Internal Video fx on the iPad Output. I thought it might be possible though it Works with an external webcam. I also tried to Change the settings of that qc file Because i already have qc but i cant figure Out how to Set it for that purpose.
Thx for your advice anyway!

You'd be much better off buying MixEmergency and running it into a VJ program like Resolume or Arkaos via Syphon, rather than trying to shoehorn an iPad into VideoSL IMO.

if your capture device appears as a webcam on your mac, then it is doable with a quartz file
radikarl 3:50 AM - 30 January, 2012
for example, it works for me with this device (Terratec G1) www.terratec.net

but not with that one (Elgato Video Capture) www.elgato.com

the latter only works with the delivered software, which has really good results when you actually want to capture old tapes.
but not as a live input for anything that is quick time related (quartz in your case) as it is missing the corresponding quick time component

what you need to do is
open the qtz in quartz composer,
select the purple video input box
click on the patch inspector symbol in the upper left of quartz composer
in one of the tabs, select your device as input instead of the camera.
close and safe.

if that is not working, and every time you re open it reverts to "default"

then you could try installing "ManyCam" manycam.com which will be your new default, and just select the sources there. just make sure it is running when you need it.

Thanks radikarl!

Sounds very good I will purchase a Terratec and try it!

maybe you don't even need to buy anything, as there is a quicktime component:
bentrask.com

Okay I guess I am to stupid or something. I installed the quicktime component, but I wasnt able to choose the input in Quicktime or in QC like you said.

However I was able to capture the source in Manycam. So the easiest way would be to get a quartz composition, which directly streams the Manycam output. I also found the Manycam plugins in QC but I cant make it work just like this. What can I do to get a direct Manycam output im QC?

connect your device
start manycam
select the correct input source in many cam
open the qtz in quartz composer,
select the purple video input box (click on it)
click on the patch inspector symbol in the upper right of quartz composer
in the drop down chose settings tab
select many cam device as input instead of the camera.
close and safe.
now load the qtz file in video SL

should work...

next time you should only have to start many cam and load the qtz file.

Freddy Simple 9:09 PM - 1 February, 2012
@radikarl
Thats exactelly what I did but I cant select any other Input than "Default" in the Patch inspector. its grey and there is no dropdown menu.:-/
radikarl 9:28 PM - 1 February, 2012
did you install the many cam driver?

do you e.g. see the many cam source in Skype or other apps?
radikarl 9:28 PM - 1 February, 2012
cam Twist ist basically the same as many cam just another app
Freddy Simple 9:44 PM - 1 February, 2012
Yes I do. It is recognized by Skype, Photo Booth and Even by the dv Plugin for mixemergency I found in another thread. I have no clue whats wrong...
The_Devil 9:54 AM - 10 June, 2013
same problem like Freddy Simple. in QC is no selectable input from Manycam.
just
- DEFAULT
- and the Build in Cam
option is allowed
whats wrong ?
