Video SL Lagging Up Waveforms on White Macbook 13in With Nvidia 9400m Video card

DJ Johnny Braciole 7:07 AM - 16 December, 2011
i have a White Macbook 13inch from 2009 with the new curved body. 2GB DDR3 Ram 250gb HD, 2.26GHTZ intel core 2 duo processor. with a Nvidia 9400m 256mb Video Card.

When i play video sl offline without the box the waveforms are fine. when i connect the serato box sl1 or sl2 to my comp and my hdmi to my hi-def 46inch display for vj'ing. my waveforms LAG badly and when i hit cue points they are delayed by a half of a second.

i checked my processor status during test and only 45% of the processor was being used.
i checked my ram status, Video SL & Scratch live and other systems proccesses combined only added up to about 1gb of ram being used out of the 2gb.....

I understand this is not a mac book pro, but i believe im still running at the minimum if not a lil bit better in specs.

i also noticed if i change the video quality to low in the video SL Settings the Waveforms and cue point response gets alot better. but who wants to run their HIGH quality videos through HDMI on low quality?

does anyone get the same problem with lagging issues on this type of mac?

my friend has a base model 13inch macbook pro and says he has no problems whatsover with his mac when he runs video sl. he has an i5 processor and 4gb ram. However he has an intel3000hd video card with i believe 356mb v-ram.

i have a nvida card in this white mac book....last time i check nvidia blows away intel....

so all im saying is what the heck do i do? Upgrade my ram to 4gb and try that out? and if that dont work just upgrade to a macbook pro?

please anyone with these issues or someone from serato get back to me on what i should do! thank you for reading this hugeeeeee post.

upgrade your ram.... and do you really NEED to have HD (or HQ) video output? like really do you NEED it or is it just a wish? I run a new 17 MBP with 8gg ram and i dont even try to run on hi. At any function i play, High school dance, club, xmas party, ect.... there is no need for Hi def or super hi quality video. I think its just over-rated buy most people.

Now dont get me wrong, I use nothing but the best cables at home in my home theater, audio and video, I also run a very VERY (i could say very 10x more) high end sound and video system in my car (that car is really a big boys toy to me) and cables and connections make the difference. This is all personal preference, but when it come to the video being displayed on 12 screens with projectors well im half cut (cause really im at a bar, im most likely got a few in me) I don't really care. as long as it doesn't look like ass its fine. Im never gonna go up to some DJ and be like "oh you cheap skate, your videos are only 480p and not ever hi def, wtf they could be 1080p" I know id someone tried to bitch at be for that i would throw them out.

In the end i do think its just your computer can handle running it at the best quality possible. just something your gonna have to live with. Check in the setup of VSL and see if there are any restrictions placed on your computer. that will tell you if video VSL in theory thinks your computer can handle it. And 1 last thing, it could also be your Hard Drive. I have always had issues running videos off and computer with a 5400rpm drive, faster harddrive might do the trick for you. or at least make it a little better.

Oh i lied 1 more thing, dont forget macs put old video cards in there computer, your video card was not anything better that "good" (maybe even only "ok") when your computer was built, its almost 2012. you running a 3-4 year old video card, cant expect the world from it.

Sorry but your machine is WAY under the minimum specs. What on earth has made you think is isn't?

If you throw 4gb of ram in there you'll get away with using VSL at a fairly low quality, that will let you increase the video buffer. Your graphics are onboard, so using 256mb of your current ram: You've only REALLY got 1.75gb of ram to use. Some phones have more than that!

But ultimately if you are serious about video you'll have to upgrade your laptop to a Pro.

Core i5/i7 13" models you can get away with, if you chuck 8gb of ram in there, but really you need a 15" with a SEPERATE video card for the best performance, so a 15" or 17".

Wow, I apologise, I've just read the minimum specs.

Serato need to change those, 'cos they're just ridiculous.

I stand by everything I said above! I'm sure other users will agree with me.

In the VSL help section Anthony from Serato is recommending a 1gb video card as a minimum now...

Try running ME, it doesnt require the same specs and delivers better quality then VSL.

I used VSL since 2008 on minimum specs (2.2 gz, 2gb of ram and 128 mb nvidia card) and have no problem.
But when i'm try ME - my macbook pro works really hard... And cooler works on high speed everytime.

so VSL is more efficient for you than ME?

i wonder if this has to do with the fact that one uses more ram and the other uses more cpu...that's how it is on my system.
phatbob 4:46 PM - 16 December, 2011
I've done video at length on 3 different MacBook Pros with different specs, and ME has performed better on all 3.

for me - yes...
And one fact in advantage vsl - i can control everything (transition, effects) only with my ttm57sl.
But ME looks really serious!
tomatoslice 10:11 PM - 16 December, 2011
that's a good selling point for vsl, Guest.
i do wish i could control more ME with the 57.
Guestdj 12:49 AM - 17 December, 2011
but i beleive in vsl update:)
DJ Johnny Braciole 5:45 AM - 17 December, 2011

oh yeah and also, i do want full HD Output....i know it doesnt matter to most people, but to me i need it because i run full HDMI to samsung LED flat Screens. so i got top of the line stuff. i dont use RCA and i never will because at all the dj jobs ive been on, the setups are always having lines in their plasma screens and they use ground lifts on everything. which is costly, crazy, bad quality and just horrible.

so yeah im gunna just upgrade to 4gb ram and then just upgrade to a new 15inch macbook pro.

So hes just ripping them in HD but their really not............No good.
popnwave 2:35 AM - 18 December, 2011
I think the 720/1080 ones qualify as HD.. audio usually needs to be redone though.
