I have just purchased video SL to run with my SL2 thanks to the 50% discount.
I used to use Virtual DJ (which is obviously incomparable with Serato is most areas) however one function which was good was the ability to automatically play a pre-selected video for when you want to play an audio-only file. For example you are mixing videos, then mix in an audio file, serato seems to just fire out a black screen however VD would pick up that it is not a video file and play (in my case) an advertising video for the club.
Does these feature exist on Serato or anything like it?
Many thanks, Steve UK.

No at the moment...although you can manually add a video before and save it so it is always linked with that certain mp3 file(and no you can not batch add videos to a crate of mp3's)
me has a 12 video bank that it will randomly choose from when you play a mp3...or you could just do what I do and play only videos lol

I just have a folder with my video drops in them. Then in the rare occasion I run across a song with no video I toss on my video drop. I'm hoping that in the next release they will incorporate auto video selection like me does.

It's so annoying that a free software such as VDJ has this function and yet a program that is so good in other ways and costs a minimum of £400 PLUS £200 usually for the video add on does not have this basic function. Come on Serato, offer something that your competitors offering FREE software do please. If I would have paid the full £200 for this video add on I would have been asking for my money straight back. It is soooooooooo basic it is unbelievable.

where is the setting to have ME load one of the videos in the media bank. Right now i have to manually drag and drop a media in from the bank, How do i make that automated?

@Code, go to Mix Emergency>Preferences>Advanced>When an unlinked audio file is loaded: Select "load media from media bank".

i am so used to the automated setup that i don't even know how to drag and drop videos from the bank. totally clueless.

I agree with thesoundinsurgent, you should have researched before purchasing any software and where did u come up with that Vdj is a free software. Unless you went and got an illegal copy.
From what i hear it looks like theres an update coming.. But yet again its been a while.

VDJ does have a free stripped down version. You need the $299 one to do full screen video though.

VDJ is amazing!!!! I dont know where to start. It does everything Vsl does and more, and a quite a few things better. but alot of video features are not available on a mac. VDJ is like trackor, 1 program and just some limited versions of it. Setup is a little more complicated but more powerful. And on a good computer extremely stable. Timecode control works great also. Really comes down to which sound card you use. You can use any timecode. lots of midi options. far more midi that vsl.
Though in VDJ vs. SSL&ME, Me wins. Not by miles but Me wins for sure. (for now VDJ 8 is on the way)

For those who are limited because of the use of PC, i'd say VDJ is a great alternative for video mixing. And like Code E said, the software is as stable as the hardware you use. Personally I think Serato is great for music and its got good video effects but VDJ is as of the moment better for video mainly because you got everything VSL offers PLUS the much acclaimed ClipBank...... Just my opinion!!!

I thought free version of VDJ didn't have video function? Damn are DJ's so lazy now that you can't already preset a visual with your audio, or at least take a extra sec to drag a visual over? You can set (ME) to load visual automatically also, but just sounds like some Lazy lack of Prep work if your doing Video.

It does have video functions but JUST like Serato you cant go full screen and you cant hide the logo. You can use tables, cdjs or midi controllers for 10 mins then the system resets itself. Its basiclly so people can try out the software but we all know how people can be.....So Im sure there are people out there taking gigs using only a laptop, we've all seen them. But that doesnt mean its bad software either....

whats up everyone .. I recently just purchased the Sl video . i am currently using a mac pro . but im having trouble with my mixing.... I always seem to be using the cross fader under the 3 screens on the computer .. by clicking on the crossfader and moving it with my mouse .. Is There Any Easier way to enable that, or do i have to go out and buy a midi controller like everyeone else is doing or spending 1500$ and buying the ttm57? please let me know .. thanks guys !

nope. you need a midi enabled mixer, or a midi controller. Im sure theres some keyboard short cut that will do it too, but thats still not as good as either of the other 2 options. and if i where you dont buy a ttm57, its kinda old tech now. get some midi enabled mixer.

depends on what you wanna use it for.
I have a second person do all my video mixing and efx so they use this guy. (www.m-audio.com)
I love the akai MPD32 but its not really got an obvious control for video fading. but if your in a club with a djm800 (which most clubs i play at do) you can use the midi in and out on the MPD32 to have your audio crossfader (or upfaders if you dont use the cross fader) linked to the video faders. www.akaipro.com

Midi controller is a option, another free option is to enable "use arrows" setting it's under the plugin/video sl settings if I remember correctly. Just check mark that box and you can fade video with one click of the arrow keys.

i tried it with AKAI Lp8... mapping a rotary to the crossfader... works good but the workflow is not the best... should also with a x1...
What about the Vestax PMC 05 pro 4 ? Its not that expensive then a TTM but with modern hardware and midicontroll...

@gus09 Yes, in SL if you go Setup>Plugins>Video-SL under your activation code area there is a checkbox to 'Use cursor keys to cross fade video'. It doesn't get easier than that, and you get to save money and hassle of lugging extra equipment to venues. Sure it doesn't have fine control, but tap once to start the fade, once again same direction to stop.
I usually don't have the channel or crossfaders linked to my mixer (TTM57-SL) because often I run loops from the last/next track and don't want the video coming up while I'm doing so.

I have to say the PMC 05 is a great mixer... i realy like his CF and midibuttons...
But i have a few problem right now controlling vsl... i dont know if i should attach the VSL crossfader to the mixer CF or not... sometimes i like to scratch the video before mixing a new track in but sometimes it doesnt fitt... i found the button to unlink the CF on thy fly in vsl and now my question is... is there any way to map another midi device like the lp8 to the cf so if i unlink the mixer i can control the VSL cf with this midi controller ? i rly dont like to use the arrows to do so...
an other question... it seems like there is an autofade function... is it possible to map a midibutton on the mixer so serato autofades if the mixers CF is unlinked when this button is pressed?
