Serato help (couple questions)

emesem 3:54 PM - 12 September, 2007
Hey guys,

I'm about to invest in a new setup, my old one was stolen (cdj800s, empath, tt200) Anyway, this time i'm going to be using ttx1's, either a rane ttm56/serato or a ttm57. The computer i'm going to use to run the program is my DAW, my studio pc. I'm mainly a recording/mixing engineer, dj'ing is just a hobby but i do like to have a pair of decks for creative studio use. Here's my pc specs...

Pc specs:
2.13ghz intel core 2 duo
1gb ram
2x seagate barracuda drives
M-audio delta1010 soundcard.

Question One.
Will my delta1010's latency play a role in how serato works?

Question Two.
Can I use my akai mpd24 to send midi signals to serato? Example...to control effects or looping?? If this is the case I might get the 56/serato combo

Question Three.
Does serato support rewire? A lot of my work, involves scratching samples over peoples songs. I could be in the middle of a project (using cubase sx3.1) and the artists wants a sample scratched, can I fire up serato and scratch the sample into cubase? Or will there be issues with the 2 programs open at the same time?

Any help would be greatly appreciated guys, when it comes to simply mixing/scratching I know my stuff, but I've never had to use this type of software before so I have to know if its compatible with my setup.

No, as SSL has its own soundcard. It would not be a good idea however, to use both devices at the same time due to the limited USB bandwidth (its an USB device, right?).

Maybe with version 1.8, not yet. Midi Support is planned for 1.8, and I've seen how Serato demonstrated midi at a tradeshow with a MPC IIRC. However, as you cant control the EFX with a footswitch yet, I doubt you will be able to control them via Midi either. Sucks.

First, a piece of advice, if you intend on using Cubase and SSL at the same time you might want to consider a bit more RAM. Memory is cheap and it will help everything to run smoothly.

1. No, SSL uses it's own soundcard (either the SL 1 or the TTM 57SL) so your Delta 1010 isn't involved.

2. Some people are doing this already with a midi to keystroke converter but full native support for MIDI is coming in 1.8 which will be a free upgrade

3. No rewire support in SSL yet, at the moment to do what you want you will need to feed one of the outputs from the 56/57 (both have balanced jacks) into the Delta 1010 and record from that input.

On the 57 vs. 56 and SL 1. In your situation I would go with the 57 one less thing to have to set up in the studio, just need the mixer and you're away.

No the Delta 1010 is PCI

The ram issue...I agree with. I will add more, the only reason I haven't as of yet is down to me using dsp effects, uad cards, focusrite liquid mix etc. I thought i wouldnt need the upgrade.

Anyway as nobspangle said....I was planning to feed the output of the 56/57 into the delta and record through cubase, but I was worried about the 2 programs being open at the same time having issues etc???

As such there is no issue with having Cubase and SSL open at the same time. The only time a problem will occur is if you computer is not powerful enough to cope with both programs at the same time. I would have thought that a core 2 duo would be fine with both programs provided Cubase doesn't eat all your RAM.
