USING AN SSL1 WITH A TTM 57SL

DOUBLE A 10:25 PM - 31 August, 2007
Does anyone know if it's possible to connect an ssl unit to a ttm57sl unit, so as to be able to have 2 laptops set up, and not have to play vinyl in order to switch between laptops? The switching process from dj to dj is a bit cumbersome and doesn't really permit "tag teaming" without importing one dj's playlist to the other's laptop... any ideas would be greatly appreciated :-)

Yes this is possible, it's also possible to have three DJs (two with SL 1s and 1 on the 57). You just turn the input selector depending on who's playing.

nobspangle... if you have 3 djs... how do you connect all the ouputs of the SL1 and the phono/CD outputs to the mixer?

Damn, just realised you can't as you would have no vinyl control for the 57, ignore me.

Although seems to be a little complicated (or impossible maybe) but I can do that, he he he... ;) playing one Dj at a time... easy.

You could always use RCA switches...

So would this be correct:
Turntables output to SL1 inputs
SL1 line outs puts to Line Inputs on 57??

Hmmmm i dont have the mixer yet but this doesnt seem like it would work. I currently daisy chain two SL1's together with two laptops and it works great. Im wondering how we can do it once i get my 57.
nik39 8:18 PM - 2 September, 2007
Yes, it will work.

Great thanks :), now onto the fx issues to do research on lol.

Also Radio shack sells Audio Spilt outs..... I have a Vestax PMC Pro 08 and it only has Line and Phono inputs.... but not 2 Line Inputs per channel, which is a problem form me because I run CDJs.... So in order for me play a normal CD during a set I run my thru and line input into 2 seperate Audio selection boxes. Maybe this would work for the 3 DJ setup.

D1-Deck A on 57SL Laptop
D2-Deck B on 57SL Laptop
A1-Analog Vinyl on Left Turntable
A3-Analog Vinyl on Right Turntable
A2-Deck A on SL1 Laptop
A4-Deck B on SL1 Laptop

Left Turntable is connected to Input 1 on SL1
Right Turntable is connected to Input 2 on SL1
SL1 THRU 1 is connected to 57SL Input 1 (Set to Phono)
SL1 LINE 1 is connected to 57SL Input 2 (Set to Line)
SL1 THRU 2 is connected to 57SL Input 3 (Set to Phono)
SL1 LINE 2 is connected to 57SL Input 3 (Set to Line)

Make sure the SL1 has a power supply...

After you set it up, you will basically have 2 USB cables, one to the TTM57 and one to the SL1. I actually use Belkin lighted USB cables, one Red and one White, so I can tell the cables apart.

The laptop (A) that is plugged into the TTM57 will be assigned to input D1 (Left Turntable) and input D2 (Right Turntable).

The laptop (B) that is plugged into the SL1 will be assigned to inputs A2 (Left Turntable) and A4 (Right Turntable).

If you want to play vinyl, you would use A1 (Left Turntable) and A3 (Right Turntable).

So, it you want to switch laptops, here is how it goes: If laptop (A) is being used, and the left turntable is playing. You can plug the other laptop (B) into the other usb port, and assign the right input to A4. To mix to the other turntable, switch the left input to A2.

If inputs D1 and D2 are not playing, laptop (A) can be changed without affecting the music. Likewise, if A4 and A2 are not playing, then laptop (B) can be changed without interrupting the music.

I'm sorry if this is confusing. Oh yah, one last thing. Laptop (B) cannot take full advantage of the 57, since it is hooked up to the SL1.

Good luck! PM me if you have any questions...

Wow great post going to have to try this out :)

This all seems *way* more complicated than just playing a record or CD while switching DJ's.

Plus, whoever uses the SL-1 is missing out on the automatic BPM synchronization on the effects, and taking a bit of a hit on sound quality.

Well my reasoning for daisy chaining sl1 boxes at a gig is because i have alot of music my partner doesnt, and when something is requested that he doesnt have i just mix it in with out any interuptions. And its no possible for us to have the same music because i have a much bigger internal hd then he does. So we concentrate on certain genres and it works out great :). Also while either one is mixing if we think of a song that willblow away the crowd that we have then we can use it easily.
DJJorel 11:47 PM - 5 September, 2007
It's not complicated at all....that post was my feeble attempt at being clear and concise...

I have used this rig many times at gigs and I have gotten compliments on how easy it is to use. I have the Odyssey coffin with the sliding platform and I attach an L-Stand over the right turntable. That way, we have never had to deal with what we call the "Pizza Delivering Syndrome"....for all of you that have switched laptops with somebody on a Serato rig, you know what I am talking about.

There really is no sound quality issue...we really cannot tell the difference. Plus, at most venues, loudness is usually emphasized over clean sound...and we only use this setup for mobiles and clubs....If I wanted to record, I just use the ASIO drivers and use the SL1 as a sound card, while using the 57 as the actual mixer. Of course, I rearrange the RCAs, but that is really no big deal.

Bottom line, it's a lot easier to do than you might think...The words just make it sound complicated.

And to be honest, I've run into a lot of microwavers who have no vinyl, and I do not want the responsibility of covering their a$$...

Man, this seems more complicated than it actually is. Been doing it this way with a few DJs from the beginning. It's way easier to tag team with someone else, especially if you're going for 2 -3 song mini mixes.

All you have to do it plug in your SL1 like you would any other mixer and use the channel selector to switch between the 2

I don't understand about the sound quality, issue. it would be similar to any other serato set up.

he's just saying that the guy using the 57's direct connection will have better quality than the guy using the sl-1 connected to the 57.

less a/d-d/a conversions with using the 57 directly.

but you are correct, it would sound as good as using an SL-1 anywhere else would.
