Hi ! I Just woked up from my Gig Yesterday
and want to report something:
I noticed that some people of the crowd wrote some
of my new song´s into their handy´s notepad.
I don´t like that, because I don´t think the go into next
Record-Shop and buy the Song, I think they go home and
download it from the net.
So I think it would be good when SL1 fades the Song & Artist
Name away after a few second & maybe fade-in when
you move the mouse over the Song & Artist field.
What do You think about this ??
(If there are any write-errors, Sorry for my bad english)

In general, as someone else said, share knowledge and compete on the execution. But I agree, some would need that function.

They just glance at the laptop :(

the more i think about it, the more i agree..... DJ's love to play tracks that other DJ's dont have. You have DJ's that hound the booth checking out what tracks you got, so they get an idea as to what tracks to get. i remember doing this when i was younger! so this feature does make sense. and besides, once you load the track, do you really need to be constantly reminded what track you're paying?!?!! "Oh crap, what im i playing again, oh yea! good thing SSL has a LARGE display for the artist and song title!"

Hehe, the last sentence is again a valid point :) I rarely use the Artist Name + Track Name after I mapped the tracked.

again a modular GUI would address this issue. IMHO, only the overall wave view, and track collection/crates display (and pitch/play controls when using internal mode) are really essential. the rest of displays could be hidden because they show us non essential information.
this is how we spin with real records. we only have the records (and the info that give us the color of the grooves) and our record crate. these two things would be translated when using SSL in two overall wave views (record grooves) and library/crates display (your music collecion or records crate).
you know, some djs put a big sticker over the record label to hide the record info. i dont like that but i understand some people prefer to be the only ones who knows what track is playing.
i think i should start another different thread about the modular GUI idea in the feature suggestions section, though i have talk about it across several different ones...

Nah, I disagree, SSL is a good vinyl emulation but there are certain things which are missing due to its nature. I mean, different vinyls feel different (yeah... believe it or, UK presses feel different than US pressings for example), you have differetn cover arts, you have different stickers on the records, you also memorize the "overall" appearance of the record, the place where you put it in the crate. All this info is of course lost when using SSL, therefore SSL needs to give additional info, like cue markers for exampl. I know you dont like the rotating wheels in SSL, but they are really helpfull after some time you find out how to use them and you really use them. For me, its handy to have a cue point and now I can (I dont have to I _can_) simply needle drop to the rough point, then I cue to the exact point with the help of the rotating circles (the moving bar gets fuller the nearer it get to the cue point). With real vinyls you had a sticker, you needle drop near to the sticker, and the sticker takes you to the _exact_ point (its a tricky sticker technology ;) You cut the sticker and apply it in a way that it "forces" the needle to jump to the correct position, not so easy to describe, hiphop djs use that technique, maybe someone else can explain that better... please jump in :) ) So there are real practical cases where the well-thought (except for the too smal overviews) SSL GUI comes in.
BC, I know you were givin your POV, same do I, hope ya dont mind :-)

Yeah, I don't like it when DJs just come up and put their face in my screen. I remember suggesting a while ago that those fonts should be smaller, but this thread brings up some good ideas as well.
The only time I've found it useful was when I asked myself questions like "Did I play the CLEAN version???" It's in big bold letters... after that, it's not needed.

i hate people staring at the screen trying to see what your playing
i dont mind sharing knowledge but biting sucks and having people looking at the screen every time you play a track is annoying

I'm thinking with "stealth mode" on, the song info should disappear 3 seconds after load. If you need to know which song is currently loaded, use ctrl-L

or why not choose for how long the artist+title should be visible .. personally if i had the oportunity i wouldn't display it at all except when i press ctrl+L .. 0 sec option in other words ..

Until then, just buy one of those privacy screens and tape it over your laptop (or cut it and just place it over the top third where the song titles are. It will only allow you to see the screen if you are directly in front of it. If you are looking at an angle, the screen is blurred. For ultimate privacy, you can buy a hood (usually used for watching video monitors when in the field (under bright sunlight).

Personally the record info being visible isn't much of an issue for me (or WOULDNT be I should say, no SSL just yet,) but I d think that a skinnable/configurable user interface is a must with a a program that costs as much as SSL.

Maybe it should work like this:
After loading, song dissapears after XX seconds (selectabele)
& when roll over the songinfo with mouse it appears again and dissapears when leaving the songinfo field.

yeh i can agree with this. As much as this is not the most crucial thing in the world, there def is a growing trend of folks that straight up sneak up in back of u to see what u working with. I was never one to hold out song names from folks, but there is a difference from when someone asks me and when they just sneak up and look at the screen

Who cares about the fact other djs steal your tracks. Most of the time when you are playing something and people ask what the name of the track is you tell them. DJing in terms of the art form is about sharing and helping other progress. Too many djs now a days are selfish and don't want to see the next guy get better. I know we are all competing for the same spots, but at this point it should be about the skill and not the track. I have the same tracks as a lot of my buddies, but we all don't play them the same nor do we transition into them in the same manner. Also for now if you don't want others to see your song titles change the name of the song or simply erase it, but put the real name in the comment box so others can't see it. come on guys think...

I think hiding track name is important cuz i spend hours/days/months/years digging and searching for those rare tracks, and it's just WRONG when anyone can see it and use it.
LET THEM DIG THEIR OWN STUFF
and it should be called "digger mode" not "stealth"
cuz every song you load will be automatically called
"Music - mp3"....let them net-dig forever ! :^)

I neither have anything against sharing the artist/song-information with customers or fellow dj's but as somebody here said, most of them just go home and download it from illegal sources. Back in the days they used to ask on which record this song can be found and so on so that they could get it that way (by buying the record).

Another suggestion would be to enter AM in the bpm to enable Invisibly (stealth) Mode. That would be hot. Then make it impossible to undo it unless you restart Serato ;)

A solution... Which sucks... but you could do it... put the artist and track name in the "COMMENTS" section of the ID3 tag. Do this for your secret tracks only. obviously if you're dropping a really popular song everyone will know it anyway. But if it's some sick new tune, just put the artist and track in the comments... you will still be able to search for it in serato, but when you load it, it will appear blank!

amitai, no reason to do that anymore. Download SSL 1.8. Load a track. Click in the tap BPM section of the track. Enter the letters AM and watch the track dissapear. Enter AM again to make them visible again.

VERY EASY !!!
Simply CLICK on TAP (BPM) and type AM. and hit ENTER and that`s it SONG NAME DISSPEAR.... if you want the names back... just type AM and hit ENTER.

This is a good feature, but what does "AM" stand for? What is the mnemonic device used here? I could not find it in the 1.8.0 update notes or in the manual.
But it is a good feature. Decades ago, there was a code that DJs would be discreet and thoughtful in asking another DJ what a track is, and also not write down playlists. With the Internet, people have become more indignant in their right to own everything for themselves.

I was at a show once and the DJ had the names blacked out. When I asked him how he´d done it, he didn´t know, some friend of his had used it, and after that, it was gone. I didn´t black out or anything, it just wasn´t there.
On the other hand, in my opinion, one of the DJ´s important roles is to promote music. When you recieve promotional records, play them out and people respond well to it, you should get on the mic and scream the name of the song and artist.

The funny part about this is, now, my opinion has changed. Because when I go scouting clubs for new tracks, I use my Sony Ericcson TrackID to grab the titles. If DJs aren't remixing the tracks entirely, anyone can get the title with a clean 10 second sample.... ahh, well, technology. Or, I could just chat with the DJ haha....
