So Id have the rane set to the analogue channels so that my freind can play via SSL3 and then get him to set his box to through to allow the control signal to run my rane using the digital channels - will that work? Two decks, one mixer, on box, on pair of decks?

No cause the mixer will either be set to 1 or the other. Unless you have 1 channel each.

This is not so that we can play at the same time, but so that we can switch over....

Yes you can daisy chain an SL3 to the 57, so two DJs can play back to back/tag team style, see my post in this thread for how to... serato.com

Thanks so much for this - rocked this set up at the weekend and despite a few teething probs (having to unlock playing tracks and being mindful that I use rel and my partner uses abs) it worked a treat - Wont need to splurge on the new Rane/SL4 now!!

I open two different Serato software 2.2.0 & 2.3.1 on a MBP 13" 2010 with sl1 & a ttm57 with two Pionner cdj 800. both soft. work.

its best to use an sl1 for this. because the sl1 has a thru for the turntables, you can connec the sl1 to the Line inputs. so on dj can be on the 57's USB input and the next dj can be on the SL1's usb input. When the first dj is finished, he needs to eject the free deck so the second dj has a place to go. Switch from the digital signal to the line in signal and you are off.
