Crossfader feeling scratchy?
DJ Daffy
5:55 AM - 17 July, 2007
I have noticed on my 57 that when I move the crossfader toward Channel one that I get a scratchy or grinding type sound/feeling (I am doing this with the mixer turned off so its not an issue pertaining to sound. Its a mechanical issue) It almost seems like the fader is catching on something. This only happens going to the left (Channel A) it doesn't happen going to the right (Channel B)
Anyone else have this problem?

I lent my mixer to DJ Godfather and now the crossfader makes a squeaking noise as you move it from left to right. It doesn't affect playback and I can't feel a difference. I think it's just the spring moving along the fader bar.
I would take the faceplate off your mixer and see if you can see what's causing it. Try cleaning the fader bars with a soft cloth or you might need some lube.

I had a problem with my torsion spring touching the censor just slightly.. I don't quite understand clearly what your problem is but def take your faceplate off and have a look

stick some lube along the torsion spring and along the underside of the guide rail where it touches and you should be cool...
I've got a needle dropper bottle of caig 100% and you can do it with the faceplate still on but angling it down...otherwise you'll need to remove the faceplate...

Thats kind of what it sounds and feels like. Like something is dragging as you bring the fader across. Is it necessary for the spring to touch or could it be adjusted so it doesn't?

The spring is designed to touch the bar. The fader will work fine without it but it will be very loose. Some people prefer this loose kind of fader.

Anyone else have this problem?
I noticed this happens sometimes when the spring that touched the bar gets worn. I noticed that the spring gets a groove in it after a while which seems to cause the issue (I have two mixers, one of which I use more thean the other. I switched faders when I first noticed this and it started happening on the second fader after a while, just about when the groove appeared...)
Lubing the rails fixes it if you want the factory standard feel. The spring mod fixes it and makes the fader (too?) loose.

I've noticed all my faders feeling a little sticky as well. I blasted some air on them and it didn't do anything. I also mix a nice long session and still nothing. When I first got it it was smooth like butter, now its more like parkay.........

It sounds like your faders need a bit of cleaning and lubing. Have a look here --> page manual-41 rane.com

My fader felt grindy if you will... took it to get lubed... used it once everything was great... in middle of gig last night the plastic mount broke and pieces of the fader fell in to the mixer... First piece of rane equipment to ever break on me in 8 years. I mostly play house, hardly ever give the fader a workout at all. Very upset.

At the time this started happening I had only put about 40 hours on the mixer. Doesn't seem like it should be dirty that quickly? The bars/clubs in AZ have a no smoking rule in effect so no issues there. Also no fog machine where I used to play so not that either?
I did take the face plate off to look at it and it does look like the end of the spring is grinding against the rail. It's a bad feeling but doesn't seem to effect anything. Wouldn't have expected that quick of an issue from Rane and a $1200 mixer?
Senbad I know you're a house junkie. I cant believe you broke a fader. Makes me nervous about mine now???

I have to say I'm impressed with the way RANE is handling it... I had 5 gigs yesterday, today and tomorrow so they sent me to the local rep. He told the guys at guitar center to loan me a new one for the weekend. Only problem now is that I like the way the updated version feels!
side note... Daffy, are you playing at Rain? I'm trying to remember what promoter brought your name up last weekend...

Sky Lounge on Sat/Sun. Technically Friday nights at Rain still belong to another promoter and his dj's so nothing can be officially done... not yet anyways ;)

I too have encountered this problem!! Over the last few weeks I've noticed that my crossfader has become totally stiff!! I only play 2 a week and no issues with outside contamination (ie. smoke, ect.) and nothing has ever been dumped in it or anything like that. So last night, it was totally stiff!!! I opened up the mixer and it looks physically ok (but what do I know)but the channel faders are smooth so smooth like my crossfader used to be. I can't see this fader needing a "Cleaning" as I am a mix DJ that does some turntablism, but nothing hardcore.
I've had an MP24Z that I've never once had to replace the fader and only had to clean it after 6 years of use, cuz I had a little bleeding now nothing. Plus I used that fader far more over the 8 years I had it then the 10 months (bought september, started using in January) I've owned the 57 and only used for the past 6 months 2 times a week at the club. I am really really dissappointed in this situation, plus the amount of money I paid for this mixer. I bought it with the "never ever need to replace your fader again" and now I am super chocked. If I have to clean this fader constantly that sucks, I mean I've been a Rane Mixer user since 1995! and never ever bought the competition 600 when everone else was!
I LOVE RANE, it's sound quality is second to none, and overall layout, functionality, all 110%++++ but it seems that the first generation 57 (which I have cuz I was one of the first ppl and Canada to buy one) has been causing some debate as the second generation seems to be more stable hardware wise.
As a side note, I have had problems with the B-buttons too.
I hope someone from Rane can help me out here, as I see that senbad629 is getting his fixed or what not. I live in Canada, so hopefully they can (and will I'm sure cuz they've always been really good in the past - had one issue with a MP24Z I had once, nothing major, but got it covered!) help me out here! thanks!

The crossfader are 100% not a first generation thing. Remember, those are *exactly* the same faders whave have been used in the 56 for years!

Cleaning the faders is as important as lubing them.
On a side note I finally sorted out the squeak and slight grind on my fader. The problem had been there since I let DJ Godfather borrow the mixer. I assumed it needed lubing but I didn't have any lube so I hadn't bothered opening the mixer up. As soon as I opened it for another reason I saw that Godfather had had the top off and moved the tension spring over the fader bar. The squeaky grinding noise I was getting was the fader spring rubbing against the underside of the top plate on the mixer. I put the spring back where it's supposed to be and all is good again. Also I've no idea why people bother, I think they're kidding themselves, the difference between the two positions of the spring was minimal.

The problem is I live in Canada, and I have no idea where to get the lube you recommend, as I've only been able to source it in the US.Is there anything else, or what exactly should I look to buy in a lube
I looked at the fader again, and it looks no dirtier than the channel faders at all!! I am the only one that uses this mixer and there was absolutely nothing ever spilt in it! nothing at all like that! I am not a turntablist, and I can't see how I've only used this mixer for less than 6 months it could use a cleaning already??
I own a MP24 and like I said, I cleaned the fader once after like 6 years! I love RANE and this mixer, but if I have to clean the fader only after this much use, wow, dissapointing to say the least. Hopefully I can get more answers soon.

If you can't find the Caig DeoxIT fader lube, sowing machine oil will work, as well.
Skip the cleaning procedure and go straight for the lube
Simply put, the MP24 used different faders. Unlike the MP24 you'll never need to replace/purchase a new fader for the TTM 56/57SL, but a quick lube will be necessary from time to time.

Ok, I'm not too keen on using sowing machine oil, but hey if Rane says it's ok, then maybe. I'm gonna try radio shack and see what they have. Otherwise, dunno if I'm gonna just order some faderlube from the US. Also, why is it that DJ Daffy's faders getting looked at? I just want to be sure that using sowing machine oil won't void my warranty and if that doesn't fix it, that I want to get my fader looked at/fixed/replaced?? via warranty.

No one's looking at my fader. I looked at it myself and determined it was the tip of the spring grinding on the underside of the fader rail. Kind of comes and goes now. I've decided its not really hurting anything so I'll leave it alone for now.

Sewing machine oil will be ok. It's a lightweight oil and safe on plastics. We recommended it when silicone lubricant is hard to find.

Ok, like......ummm....NEVER EVER doubt the quality of a rane unit.....I should know I've been using their gear since 15 years ago...anyhow! Problem solved. I got a nice supplier in Canada to send me some Caig MCL fader lube and OMFG! the faders are so loose, you'd think they were porn stars!! LOL!! Anyhow, they cut like butter and are even smoother than factory! I would tell everyone, get some fader lube (the actual stuff) and you'll be on cloud nine! I will say I am a bit dissapointed that it needed a cleaning and lube so soon, but for $5.00 for lube as opposed to having to buy new faders one day (for other brands) I'll take the $5.00 fader lube and 10 minutes of time any day!! THANKS RANE!! LOVE YOU GUYS!! DJ DMT!

Really, never doubt? I have been and shall remain a huge rane supporter... however since I got my 57 back from the factory within 3 gigs time both of the up faders broke on the mount just like the crossfader did. That's 3 failed faders in 3 weeks time, which was actually a total of 4 gigs.
To keep the last 2 gigs going we took the faders from my friends 56 and installed them on the fly. The mounts on the older 56 faders are a much thicker plastic, so when the screw is put in them they are less likely to fracture.
I'm really disappointed. I feel like there is no point in even sending it back if Rane is going to replace the fader mount with the same ones I have now.
So, are the mounts not made of metal because of the magentic fader design? Surely there is a metal that could be used on such a critical component.

same ting - i'm from toronto but went and played next to a pool and the ocean this summer, since i got back the faders were getting sticky - it's probably the ocean, sea salt and humidity
i tried to clean it with air but no luck that made it worse - a friend is giving me some fader lube for it this week
hopefully it works
this TTM 57 is awesome, I used to work here in Toronto @ LnM selling the stuff, and Rane is top-notch. Gonna try that lube you guys mentioned cause my fader needs a strong push to move over

^^^^You should make sure you open up the mixer to get good access to the X fader, and first clean the rails real good with a q-tip and a bit of denatured alcohol before you go and spooge the fader up with a bunch of Cali lube.
You can make the fader worse / more sticky, if you don't properly remove all the built up gunk on it first.

It's worth saying again. Open it and clean it. You will be so happy when it's done. Takes just a few minutes and if you use the right cleaning solution the fader is like butter... better than brand new.
