Nightmare night - goddam!

Gamble 8:20 PM - 21 April, 2007
Last night I get to this new spot I was doing a one-off party for. Get there and the left turntable has a faulty tonearm, and the needle cannot screw in. I try for a few minutes and my ortofon get STUCKS in the tonearm. I work on it for 15 minutes till it finally comes out. Still early...they get a replacement turntable and the new one's working fine. 30 minutes into the night the other turntable completely powers down and dies. I use "instant doubles" and rock off one turntable for the remainder of the night (thank you serato!).

Finally, with 10 minutes left in the night, a drink gets spilled all over the 1 turntable I was using and DRENCHES my serato control vinyl. I try to wipe it down but its not making much difference and I can't get a decent signal. At that point I rock off of internal mode on both TT's for the last 10 minutes, which wasn't too successful. Anyway, i'm just happy the last incident happened so late in the night; is the control vinyl a wrap or is there some way for me to clean it?
Dj KaGeN 8:39 PM - 21 April, 2007
flip it over.
dj disturbed 8:50 PM - 21 April, 2007
just wash it off with water (rinse it in the kitchen sink)... its plastic.. a little water is not going to hurt it... use a soft clean cloth or a new dish sponge (not one with a rough side to it) to wipe any sticky spots (might try some mild liquid dish detergent... just make sure to clean all the detergent residue off) then dry it gently with a micro fiber cloth.. should be good as new (well at least as new as it was b4 stuff was spilled on it) once its compleatly dry

WRONG!!!! You Need To Distile The Water & Add 1 or 2 tsp Of Rubbing Alcohol To The Water..(This Is To 3 Cups Of Water) Then Put The Water Into A Small Spray Bottel..Spray And Wipe With A Micro Cloth..Undistiled Water Has Alot Of Crap In It That Can Screw Up Your Vinyl Grooves.

Kagen: I don't usually use the B side because once you've been using the A side for a while, the B side is incredibly heavy to move back and forth (hard to describe) while the A side is light and easy-moving.

KRNG: I just got home and have a gig in 3 hours. I don't have rubbing alocohol so I will just have to wash with water.

Update: My Ortofon cartridge still seems to be working ok, although I did have to mess with that tiny pin on the top which had been pushed down a bit when it got stuck.

I will never dj there again. Imagine if version 1.7 had not come out with the pitch lock instant doubles update? It would have been HORRIBLE.

Gamble.. I take it you're a microwave DJ? The reason why your record may feel that way is because it's slightly warped (concave). Look into it.
Gamble 11:17 PM - 21 April, 2007
Sixx huh?
The record isn't warped. I used to feel the same way about some regular vinyl as well, remember when dj's used to put the little piece of tape in the spindle to help this issue? Not sure if this is exactly the same thing, but its whatever.
sixxx 12:39 AM - 22 April, 2007
Well, records that are thicker also feel heavier. I don't see why one side would feel that way. I use both sides of the control records and I don't know what you're talking about.

No record that I've ever came across feels different on one side than the other unless:

1. It's a one sided record. Meaning there is no grooves on the second side at all. You know. Some battle records are this way.

2. The record is slightly warped (concave) see above.

3. You got some special record we know nothing about? lol

I'm not explaining clearly, too hard to do just by writing.

I Understand What He's Sayin..He Dosent Get A Smooth Pull Back & Foward On One Side Of His Vinyl..The Other Side Is A Rougher Pull Back $ Foward..Gamble Try Taking A Small Knife And Put It In The Spindal Hole Of The Rough Sided Vinyl. And Spin The Knife Around Slightly. To Open The Hole A little.. Test The Record Until It's Right And You Get A Smooth Feel.

If the record feels heavier on one side it's because you've been playing ONLY one side and have warped the damn record. Alternate sides and you'll get twice the life out of the control vinyl, unless you are always playing those 14 minutes songs.

See? A REAL dj knows what I'm talking about... warped. lol

I'm playing with you Gamble. I really don't know what you're talking about. I wish you could describe it even if it's hard putting it into words.

Oh well, no reason to dwell into this. Try opening the whole a bit more. That could be the problem... although I don't see how... After all, the whole should be the same size no matter which side you flip the record to.
sixxx 3:21 AM - 23 April, 2007
... and I meant the hole.

You got it, that's what I was trying to say haha.
kicko 1:45 PM - 23 April, 2007
vinyl always have one side that "slides" easier then the other, it's the concave/convex theory. This can happen in all sorts of degrees, usually thicker vinyl is worse and more prone to warping.
