Ok Im a jerk!.. I know that I am, and I really dont care if people call me one cuz I know the truth. But I just want to know what you guys would have done?

I have this rare remix and I have been playing it at least once a week for the last month. Im sure everyone will be rocking it within the next few weeks but Im probably one of two DJ's in Chicago who have this remix. This guy comes to the booth and asks me the name of the track. I said the name of the real song. He said no, my friend is a DJ and he wants to know what version that is.. I started laughing.. I said if your friend is a DJ im sure he would know.

Would you guys give some complete stranger the name of a hot promo or remix that is in your possession???

I sure as hell wouldn't!!!!

I would !!! I'd rather smoke them at turntable skills than horading the name of a song, and with RIAA's permission even give them a copy.

*hoarding*
Dj KaGeN 7:33 PM - 17 April, 2007
the dude knows the name of the song, knows you have a remix, and wants the name of it. I have been on the receiving end of that deal so many times. It is part of the game. I'm not hating on you for hoarding it - but you better not be leaning on the track to make you big, you better have mad skills to be that cocky.

Man, what is this the 1980's/70's, where you hide the name of your tracks. To each is own, but part of the reason DJing (especially turntablism) started progressing more is because people opened up and started sharing ideas. This is one of the reasons why I like Serato so much...no more "out-exclusiving" me because I don't have the record on vinyl, you actually have to "out-skill" me now. If you choose not to share the name of the track, that's on you.

oh yeah...I would have just told him the name of it..chances are he was a bedroom dj. I know every dj thinks other djs are out to steal the next guys job...but music is public..skills are your own.
tribalmadness 8:27 PM - 17 April, 2007
If it is that exclusive it wouldn't matter if he knew the name of it. It wouldn't make it any easier for him to get a copy of it. No harm in telling him what it is. Be cocky about it and you lose a potential fan. PR is a large part of being a DJ, you should be friendly to everyone.
DJ CISCO 6:11 PM - 23 April, 2007
yeah Im friendly... But I remember back in the day when people (including myself) used to put stickers or flyers on their labels so no one would know what track you were playing... I also hate the fact that fools in the club are always looking at my screen to see what track Im playing or whose remix it is.. I guess its just the old skool kid in me =)

I dont mind in sharing with other DJ's I know, but not with some complete stranger who's asking for his boy who couldn't even come up and ask for himself...

Its a spanish track anyways....
