i was reading an article about the QFO and how it has 60% pitch shift abilities, then afterwards i went 2 the toilet.
and i came up with this idea!!!
i'll try 2 explain it, but its a bit hard.
i use SSL mainly for music production purposes.... i like 2 think of my turntables as an instrument and SSL helps me use original samples that i make up, then make up scratch riffs & lines etc. what i generally have 2 do is either come up with a single-shot sound, or come up with a pre-sequenced line (e.g. synth line, brass line or whatever)
what about having something like a step-sequencer (maybe similar 2 the layout i believe that's used in Fruity Loops) or an appregator (im not sure if this is the right spelling or word!!!) that CAN control either the pitch OR the sample.
Think about it - u have a single-shot sample, like a single synth note. Then u can program the step-sequencer to change the pitch of the note at regular time intervals or BPM based. so when u scratch, u scratch the same sound but the pitch will change up or down according to what has been pre-programed. It wouldnt have to be elaborate like they have in sequencers or whatever, even something simple like a 4-step sequencer so every half bar the pitch changes and therefore instead of scratching the same sample at the same pitch - u can change pitch (essentially change the note of the sound) and create more melodic scratching. This would help instead of using the pitch control to manually change the pitch, and this would also make pitch changes much more accurate.
With the sequencer changing samples, it could replace the "scratch sentences" that u have on current battle records. So SSL will change the sample for you whenever u want.
Reading back on what i wrote, i can understand how this feature may not be needed by the majority of SSL users, and also it seems pretty far-out etc, but does anyone think this has any merit at all?? To me, this would be a "Creative Feature", more than anything. I think it falls under the "Effects" banner.

I think this could be generalized as 'change the sound while you scratch', which I like very much ;)
Or more generally, send audio to the turntable in real time. Lots of interesting applications...

i think its a cool idea, however, rather than incorporating a sequencer, you could make an auto play/ playlist feature- a little window you could drag and drop individual samples into and once one sample was finished playing in ssl, the next sample would load automatically onto the record of your choice. while you would have to sample the different notes of your synth individually, thats not that much work, and it would be alot easier to implement than a sequencer (well acutally, it is kind of a sequencer isnt it). anyway, this would also allow people to use ssl like winamp which could be a bonus.
another thing you could do is just make a big wav. file with all the samples you want on it, and boom- youve got your own custom scratch record which could do what you described no problem.

but i imagined what i was suggesting to be more of an "auto sample changer". the angle that i was on was 2 have the samples auto change at set times or intervals (or however u wanted 2 set it up by - time based, or BPM based, or whatever).
eg, lets say u wanna play notes like C, E, D of a single synth sample. and lets say its a simple musical scratch line that u wanna scratch like the following (in musical bars)

u could program the step-sequencer to change the pitch of the sample from C to E to D then back to E at the start of every bar. I guess the immediate problem with this would be how would SSL recognise the tempo and when to change etc - but more than anything i just wanted to illustrate the possibilities of what im suggesting.

yeah i hear you. what im suggesting wouldnt quite give you the exact same effect, but you could do something very similar by just editing the scratch phrase you want to work with before hand. if you had short seperate samples of synth notes cceeeddeee all in a row, back to back on the wav. file you mapped to one of the records, you could work with it in a very similar way.

i hear u as well.... i guess the reason why i think this feature would be cool is because u could just come up with your 1 single sample (1 note), and u wouldnt have 2 prepare ure lines beforehand by playing the notes and recording it etc. as simple as it sounds (believe me, i am doing this now), the act of keying out the notes, normalising, making sure the spacing is sufficient, then exporting from sequencer to a wav or mp3 file is time consuming. also with my idea, u could choose the notes on the spot then test it out. with coming up with the notes in 'scratch sentence style' wav file, if u dont like the notes, then u have 2 start again. i guess im looking at it from a band perspective - just say u get 2gether 2 come up with a new song.... im not gonna sit there and go "hang on guys, let me just do this this and this".... u get me? believe me, im doing now what u r suggesting!!! very tedious! :)

word- i could see how it could get tedious- and being able to fool with samples in real time would def. kick ass, dont get me wrong. just curious though- have you checked out LIVE? its a fantastic program for manipulating samples in real time, designed to be played in live environments (hence the name) and it might be better suited to your needs if your playing with a band. its also a kick ass production tool.

yea, i know about it... but i wanna scratch my samples... not just play loops & stuff..... & besides i use SX3 for my production needs!
