Vinyl is making a comeback!

"NPR ran a story this morning about the comeback of vinyl. It seems that sales of new vinyl records are up about 10%; sales will approach a million this year (as against half a billion for CDs). NPR mentioned the popularity of a turntable with a USB interface — they didn't specify the brand; could be this one, or this — and speculated on other possible reasons for the resurgence. They mentioned sound quality and lack of DRM as possible causes. Sound quality can and will be debated, but DRM rates a resounding 'Duh.'"

a few major labels have already announced they will no longer produce vinyl at all, even for djs...

vinyl is spent. its really not practical. i love it, but unless your a collector or a nut, whats the advantage?

The advantages of vinyl:
1. You look so cool while playing it. No other format makes you look as cool as vinyl does.
2. The sound is in fact "warmer".
3. It's not as easy to duplicate vinyl to another vinyl. Yes, you can record it into CD format or mp3. But, if you have a rare copy and don't make a copy of it... no one else will have it. With mp3's... sharing just kills it.
4. So... referring to 3 above, with vinyl, if you had all classic cuts on vinyl that were hard to find on CD, you were the man. Now anyone can pretty much play anything that has been out and with people ripping their "jewels" and passing them along, it's pure maddness out there.
5. Vinyl IS still practical. I mean, without my control RECORDS I wouldn't want to use Serato.

i agree with everything you're saying sixxx but if you trying to travel, would you ever want to bring your vinyl? maybe people should stop sharing their hotness. i still buy vinyl but i just record it and let it sit.
its does sound better... it does look cooler.. haha. unless you're a dj, NO ONE CARES! people just want to dance. "fuck chicks tonight, I JUST WANT TO DANCE!"

In all seriousness, I wouldn't mind bringing a small bag of vinyl. Now, I wouldn't be stupid enough to bring crates and crates and crates like the old days.

and the "unless you're a dj" no one cares... that's not necessarily true. Trust me. Lots of people do know and do care.

haha. honestly, i have heard some crazy things since i've been on serato. people don't think your actually doing any mixes.
when i say people don't care, i mean, people can't tell between 256 and 192... or between 256 and vinyl. no one would know. your "hip hop heads" comment is funny and kind of holds weight, but there are so many trendy hip hop heads who have no idea what they're talking about. i want to start throwing blows when stupid make stupid comments.

I got you. What I meant is that at some real hip hop shows, it does matter if you're using turntables or not (whether you're using Serato or real vinyl). No joke.
As far as trendy hip hop heads... fuck them.

i hear it for sure. if i were at a dmc comp, i wouldnt want to see serato. although, im sure turntablist would bring it to an even higher level with digital.
sixxx
7:32 AM - 17 April, 2007
Yeah. I guess so. I'm open minded when it comes to that. I like innovation one way or another, really.

7:34 AM - 17 April, 2007
I think serato is def gonna open it up big for turntablist...but I also rather see someone gettin down on ol skool vinyl then for them to just press buttons.
sixxx
7:39 AM - 17 April, 2007
Yeah. I feel you on the whole pushing buttons thing. It would be like going to see car races with automated drivers. It just wouldn't be fun... unpredictable and stuff.

telling between bitrates or even mp3 vs wavs is debatable. But I can always tell the difference between vinyl and digital - even if it's CDs vs vinyl.

Maybe...that would be a good way to see what people want to see more. I think it would be obvious at first....ol skool katts will go see deejays rock it on reg vinyl....and these new skool kats who go buy lap tops with windows vista without even doin research and find out that serato doesnt even run with vista yet will go watch new skool deejays rock tha crowd w/CV's
sixxx

I think you mean between vinyl and an mp3 from CD... because an mp3 ripped from vinyl can fool you.
sixxx
7:41 AM - 17 April, 2007
Probably. I think it would come down to skill and entertainment. Just like you wouldn't want to see a DJ rocking regular vinyl who sucks... you wouldn't want to see a serato DJ who sucks.

^ for sure.
i really don't think you can tell unless it's 128 or something like that.
in high quality headphones or legit monitor speakers, of course you can tell. in a club system, can you honestly say you can hear the difference.

I think the katts that started with wack tables....a crappy radio shack mixer...and searchin everywhere for those hard to find tracks on records are gettin a lil jealous with tha new katts that are just pickin up serato and they got everything. I know I kinda am. I go on this forum everyday and i read about these noobs say "okay i just picked up serato today and i got my first gig in 2 days....soooo...how does serato work?" I was a bedroom deejay for over a year b4 i headed out to my first gig....that wasnt even the reason i started deejayin....i just loved music.

7:50 AM - 17 April, 2007
I feel you on that Ab-Loon. I'm actually not jealous, per say, of people who come up with a music library so quick. I know I got lots of shit that isn't available anywhere that I ripped from vinyl and that I won't share for my dear life!!!!
It does bug me when they wanna be all microwave and be DJ's like in one month.... asking for playlists and what to do here and there...
It's good to ask questions. Nothing wrong with that. But, no amount of words can beat going out in the real world and experiencing this shit we do.

Got ya sixx. I love teaching new katts how to spin. I still don't know if I consider myself "ol skool" yet (only been spinning for 10 years) but i always grew up on hip hop and always studied all the ol skool deejays b4 i actually go on turntables. Theirs actually a thing at cal poly pomona every once in a while where they have session for deejays...emcee's and b-boys. and you go there to either get down or learn...and i trip out when i get on tha tables and peepz just watch and ask me questions.

Small world. 4 years ago, I lived in Huntington for awhile and used to go watch the CPP DJ competitions and Session A competitions at Cal Poly Pomona. There's some awesome talent at that campus.

I am in canada and the record pools out here have switched to straight digi due to no more wax being done by labels except universal, which is making vinyl obsolete in about 4 more months as well.

yeah man....its session A and its still goin strong. But from what im hearing (and im not a student there...soo i dunno for sure) is that they are trying to shut it down. Their was a visionaries show there and some katts ended up taggin up the outside of tha building where they were having tha show. So for now they have security checkin peepz bags and everything. Wat Im also hearing is that students that really feel hip hop are on tha cal poly forums saying they dont need that "garbage" at their school. Like I said I dont go there....Im just telling tha rumors that i here. I think session A is a good way to keep hip hop alive. The shows they have their are free.....not just for tha students but the outside as well....they didnt have to do that. I just hope they dont bring it down.
