USB 3

anyone using this already?
since it also is backwards compatible with usb2 this seems a better approach to esata.
thinking about getting a controller and disk...

and since it is backwards compatible and since the bus rate is much higher, and thus the drivers should be able to cope with larger data streams, it may be a solution to poor behaving usb2 ports and a solution for NS7 users...
i could be totally wrong also....

usb3 has not been adopted by hardware manufactures as the new standard yet so until that happens we wont see controllers with usb3. Also INTEL will try to push their own technology and try to replace usb3 as the standard so this will be very similar to hd dvd vs bluray in the future until one wins.

euh at least seagate and lacie are selling usb3 expresscards and external disks...
dell has some models with usb3 on board...
sure there will be another standard, but given the fact that it is also usb2 compatible gives this platform a wide platform to be used
i 'm especially curious as to how this behaves when the ns7 is connected to it...
gonna see if i can get a hand on one

This will suck when USB 3 is more widely adopted and people are using old cables/ old devices to connect to the new interfaces. Tech support nightmare.
marcA 5:21 PM - 16 November, 2010
i don't think so cause the usb3 cable is different from the usb2 one
(at the device side - kinda double connector)
kraal 6:10 PM - 16 November, 2010
yeah a usb 2 cable can fit in a usb3 connector
Ragman 6:12 PM - 16 November, 2010
Yeh I got a usb3 controller for a external drive dock. Dam it's fast as heck.
marcA 8:34 AM - 17 November, 2010
@Ragman : if you have the ns7 does it work when connected to that controller?
Ragman 2:03 PM - 17 November, 2010
marcA I have the V7. I never thought to try it but I'll give it a shot today when I get home from work.
marcA 3:09 PM - 17 November, 2010
@ragman : so i presume you are using a portable external disk? i mean you power the disk through the usb3 cable? if so, do you need to power the expresscard in order to be able to operate the external disk?
the reason i ask is that if i look at the lacie expresscard they mention an external power supply which can be attached to the expresscard to power the disk and that seems a bit ridiculous (since usb3 is supposed to provide the double power compared to usb2)
thx!
Ragman 3:18 PM - 17 November, 2010
Marc the dock is self-powered and has a power adapter. It's a caddy for 2 (2tb) 3.5" SATA drives. So not a portable.
marcA 3:20 PM - 17 November, 2010
@ragman : i see :)
but does the expresscard itself has the ability to be powered also?
Ragman 3:21 PM - 17 November, 2010
There was no internal power connector for the USB3 controller so I assume it's powered through the MOBO bus
Ragman 3:23 PM - 17 November, 2010
I'll test that also on my USB2 portable ext.
marcA 3:25 PM - 17 November, 2010
@ragman: is it an internal usb3 port then? if not, what brand is it?
thx!
Ragman 4:13 PM - 17 November, 2010
marcA here's the link.

www.newegg.com
marcA 4:17 PM - 17 November, 2010
@ragman: i see, it's installed in a normal pc
thx for the info

the question is, out of the 480mbps bandwidth that usb2 offers, how much is used to transfer midi data and sound through it with software like serato and traktor. If its not even 50% of it then its like a highway with 10 lanes for 2 cars.
marcA 8:03 AM - 18 November, 2010
@zaguma : since you need a real good usb2 port on your laptop for the ns7 i guess the data flow is rather high, which doesn't mean it takes all of the bandwidth, and since you can hook up a 2nd v7 to a master v7 with an ethernet connection and that connection most probably operates at 100mbit you could be right that only the half of the bandwidth is needed.
but that is half of the story i think, it's more a question of how fast the usb port is capable of transferring that data to the pc in a consistent way (and my feeling is that it goes wrong there)
so fiven the fact that sub3 is roughly 10 times faster the internals must be able to cope with that data flow and so i assume that it only can be beneficial for connecting an ns7 to that port on a system that otherwise can't run the ns7

that said, i'm looking to buy one to test this out myself, it would be great for those who now have problems on their windows machines...
