Sup Peeps!
I've had serato for a few months now and rocking it reguarly with my hiphop crew who i DJ for as well as using it for cuts and dmc custom routine practice. ive got some gigs coming up where id like to rock serato as my main mixing tool with my decks and therefore need a portable drive. size wise im looking at around 100/120GB.
ive found two western digitals from my favourite IT retailer. ive heard and agree that WD are very reliable and seem to work well for SSL. One is small, the passport model with 120GB space and the other a much larger physically sized 250GB, both are WD. the passport is much smaller, lighter and powers through USB whereas the larger drive powers off AC mains. ive sussed out the tech spec of each and am leaning towards the passport. with that said im not sure what to look for specifically in terms of seek time, cache, spindle speed and so on. i was just wondering so i can purchase one of the two by the weekend. both are in within my budget and in AUD are very reasonable for what they are.
WD PASSPORT 120GB: www.ht.com.au
WD Mybook Edition 250GB:
www.ht.com.au
the passport weighs 105g compared to the 1.3kg of the 250GB.
id really appreciate it if you could suss them out quickly and let me know what you reckon. basically either size im happy with but what i want is reliability and the model that will run at similar speed and so forth as my internal.
thanks for the time, hope you can help.
peace!

I highly recommend the passport. They had a 160 GB version out last time I checked... go with that one (bigger the better).
I can't say how long I've ran off that thing, but I KNOW it's been waaay longer than 6 hours. I believe this drive will go as long as I need it to. It doesn't get hot. A lot of DJs from the seminar I did said they're going to switch from a powered drive to a USB powered drive due to problems they've had when the drive lost power (data loss or corruption issues).
Now for the really good news... I've personally seen one eat it from +5 feet up to a concrete floor more than a few times (the same drive). Still works like a champ. The last time it fell, we just laughed cause we knew it was dead (we have backups). Not a bad sector on it.
Go buy him.
