Doin' Store Gigs...

dj_esentrik 7:11 AM - 13 March, 2007
I've been doing gigs at Express clothing store on Saturdays for awhile now and the customers that come in always crack me up. They be dancing while they shoppin and buying lots of shit cause of the music lol... But i always get questions about using Serato from young to old. "People still use vinyl?" "What do u need a laptop for?" and my favorite "so... what happens when ur shit crashes?"
Anybody have gigs at stores?

What kind of music do they have you playing?

I wish the Express store here will do the same hire Djs.

If you don't mind me asking, How much is the rate for doing a gig in a store?

I also spin at a local mall store and yes esentrik, they do dance and ask tons of questions about the equipment and djing in general. Its fun though, the customers appreciate you alot. I love it when all the hot chicks come in, gets me motivated. I play anything I want, underground/old new school hiphop, dancehall, house, r&b, 80's, etc....

there is another thread, but it got all fucked up.

yeah I work at A larger girls clothing store. Pay is decent, all the equipment (tech 12's, sure447's and mixer) is there, and there is 2 of us dj's on rotation. I love it cause i can play w/e and screw around. dirty or clean, they dont care. I use it as another chance to be practicing!

they're supposed to give me a playlist of the songs the company wants played but they always forget lol. So they just tell me to play whatever, just nothing too gangsta and any dirty versions. So, I'll play Billboard top 40, hip hop/rap, R&B, 80's, disco, 90's, pretty much everything. 80's and 90's seem to work great with the customers.

That sucks. So, like, no good-looking thin girls ever come in? Hahahaha

I did some grand openings for a few Hollywood Video stores back in 2000. Not very fun - they had me outside in the middle of August playing mostly pop music. Not the good kind either - like Britney and NSync. Easiest (and longest) gig though.

I spin at the Guess store, downtown Miami. It's fun as hell. Nice females, pay is decent. I play mostly mainstream Hip-Hop & R&B and dance/house. I'll throw in some older classics, Latin Freestyle, reggaeton, salsa, merengue....every now and then. When I first started, they would send me to different stores throghout south Florida and they would set up analog decks for me, but this gig is pretty much permanent, so the store installed their own booth with CD decks. Before I took this gig, I never really played electronica and I never spun on CD decks. But I been spinning for about 10 years, so it didn't take that long for me to adjust.
