i'm thinking about getting a 160 gb usb powered drive. looking for opinions from people who have experiance with these. the size and the amt of wires appears to be a dream come true. but not if it takes too juice much away from my laptop

do you have to plug that into an outlet? the one i am looking at has one wire. it goes to the usb, and gets its power from that too

I got the Lacie 250 gig for $109 at Best Buy. The only downside is that it needs to be plugged in, but IMO it's a minor inconvenience becasue it performs like a champ and doesn't over heat. Naturally it gets a little warm, but overall it's pretty solid.

You want one with its own power supply. You are gambling more with a usb powered drive.

The only external drives I think it's safe to not use a seperate power cord with are 2.5-inch laptop drives...these draw much less current than the 3.5-inch "desktop"-type drives.
The Lacie "Porsche" plastic cases are becoming infamous for killing hard drives with heat...you want something with better ventilation, preferably metal.
