50yr old + crowd???

dj hes 5:39 PM - 8 September, 2010
So i am djing an odd event. I can give you all details if anyone is interested but it is a weird event for sure.

anyways, it is for a retirement of a pretty big local community person, and the crowd will likely be 50+ yrs old.

Any idea of what you would play if these were some of the suggestions?

The Beatles - Here there and Everywhere
The Beatles - In my Life
Bob Dylan - The times they are a changin
Neil Diamond - Beautiful Noise
Frank Sinatra - I did it my way
Van Halen - Happy Trails
Devo - Workin in the coal mine
Rolling Stones - Im Free
Clash - Should I stay or should i go
Kool and the Gang - Celebration

The reason i am asking you guys is because i can search lists online easy, i am looking at more of pp that have successfully djed events for this age, and what might have worked well for them.
dj hes 5:41 PM - 8 September, 2010
This looked like a good source, this event is going to be way different than usual.

Take a listen to DJ Soo's Baby Boomer Mix for an overall feel.

You might also throw in some Pink Martini for NW cred.

A 50 year old wasn't even born in the 50's and would've been a child in the 60's so i wouldn't overdo it. Half of those suggestions are 70's/80's

Just play the regular cliche ass music that most of the Dj's around here would suggest when they're stereotyping crowds

;p

My mother is 52 this year, she was 20 in 1978, 30 in 1988. And I listen to way more Retro than she does, I remember in the mid 90's when she had a party and was complaining to me about this jackass Dj that was playing all Retro (I thought it sounded like a good time).

What I'm trying to say is these people aren't geriatric and may not listen to people stereotypical image of "old people" music. Not to mention that there will probably be family members of all ages there as well. Also the fact that they`re a big community person as you said, more all ages. I would keep it fresh and move around the music, making sure not to focus on downer tunes. If you over plan you will take away from the spontaneity of the crowd and may bore the shit out of them.

I did a 40 year reunion recently and every request was for something from the 60s 70s 80s

This is what I'm talking about. This song came out in 1989 and referenced swing music from the 40's that would've appealed to old people then, this was 20 years ago. We got a whole new set of old people now, Playing cliche clunkers that are no longer relevant to the demographic all night is on some cornball shit. The song itself may work, who knows? But creating a whole playlist around this shit is gig suicide.

I'm not trying to be a dick, I just see so many stale notions about crowds and playlists sometimes it boggles my mind and I'd rather see people steered in a more realistic direction.

I have to agree with DJ Shamann ..

9 out of 10 weddings I've done the past 5 years or so .. all the "older" people always are the ones requesting the more current tunes .. ie: 3 weeks ago I was spinnin' a wedding for 350 peeps .. i was in the middle of a cool cheeze 80's set .. brides mother came up and wanted to hear David Guetta's "sexy bitch" .. not the edited version .. but the raw dirty mix ! I contribute the top 40 being more popular at weddings and other "older" events to the boom in top 40 radio stations and more music video channels on satallite .. regardless .. it's great, I get sick of playing Dion's "run around Sue" and Chubby's "lets twist again" ..

in short .. mix it up bro .. drop some cheezy classics .. but bring in the newer stuff too .. just 'cause they are up there in age doesn't mean they are oblivious to modern music .. they like to bust a move as well ..

just think of it as this .. when your 50 - 60 -70 - 80 and are at a wedding .. do you want to hear "stuck in the middle with you" or some stupid polka and such ?? probably not .. I'm a DJ for life and will ALWAYS be in touch with the current music .. hell .. i want my son growing up having a "COOL" dad that is in tune with his musical tastes and can hold a conversation with him about music/artists/equipment etc ..

just my 2cents

cheers

thanks for the feedback and i agree, we shall see how the event goes, it is tomorrow! The person retiring is 65, and many of the pp staying later are said to be a bit older. but i think it should be an easier gig that i thought, i was given 2 hrs of song suggestions (most of them i would have never played, but they are dedication songs to the retiree on honor, so i have to play em!)

and the gig is 3 hrs max, so this should be easy stuff. Ill try to update with what went over well and what type of age group actually shows up.

thanks guys

Whoa, some of you all are way off track if the person is about 50 - look toward some Disco, Funk, and Soul - even 80's music. If the crowd is Rock oriented, you could probably get away with some of those Crooklyn Clan mash ups that use Rock songs (or the originals - Journey, Stevie Nicks, ACDC, etc).

You'll be in trouble if you do too much Beatles and 60's music. That person was a toddler/pre-teen in 60's, cool for a quick look back but not the whole night.

Do that Mobile Beat playlist above - you should be good.

Ooops just saw the person is 65 - continue.....

70s hit and early 80's hits, unless they request 60's or 50's ..good luck

jive bunny - swing the mood always goes over well. motown is HUGE as mentioned above. carlos santana - smooth,

one thing to watch out for is too much bass. try to avoid anything that goes thump...at least no more than one or two max in a row... tina turner - simply the best. also a lil swing never hurts, cha cha, salsa, merengue. you'll hve to judge by the crowd if much classic 60's rock will work because that was a niche market back then, even though ebjoyed by many....a lot didn't like the new rock sound, it was offensive. sock-hop tunes are always good to spice up the energy a lil.
