Password Protect External Harddrive

Josh218 6:25 PM - 7 September, 2010
Hey guys.... I have an WD external hd and I want to put a software or something on it, so just in case you loose it or it gets stolen, they cant access my library on it. I do have it backed up on 2 computers. I want to know what you guys are using to protect your HD just in case this happens. Please state the name of software if you do use it. Also, how does it work wrt to Scratch Live. Do you have any problems with it during Live performance... Thanks in advance guys

I use USB Security 3.2 Pro. the free version only works for under 4GB storage, i think...

Works pretty well. I haven't had any problems. It separates the drive into 2 partitions - 1 very tiny partition for the application and hides the other partition. Once you enter your password it shows the hidden partition and hides the app's partition.

Now this does not affect the music library cos it's not actually hiding \ compressing any files. pretty cool.

Give the free version a try on a small memory stick.

The only way you are truly going to protect your files is encrypting your files, something that may not work well if serato is reading from it.

You are right about encrypting your files is the best solution, but serato might have issues reading the files...

I will try windows security 3.2 first and then if i like it i might upgrade to the full version. I just want something that can hide the music just incase someone just grabs ur harddrive n runaway, i do live in Brooklyn, so it is a possibility... Happen to some friends already...

yes I wouldn't risk encrypting my files...

Phat-Al has used encryption software with great success... can't think of the name and am too lazy to search, but it's on here somewhere

I think it was TrueCrypt.

I just want to know that if you use these encrypted/password protection software, does it affects your sets in SSL, does it go into AutoLock and you always have to re-enter password to get to your files... Thanks again for all the help guys. Will keep you updated

I tried truecrypt. If I remember correctly, it creates a vault for the files which I didn't like.
DJ Pullout 5:57 PM - 9 September, 2010
dont use true crypt
Josh218 4:29 PM - 10 September, 2010

IMO you're just asking for more trouble than it's worth.

If your HD is stolen, Oh well...you're beat
They're just music files.

You have more chances of something going horribly wrong during a gig than someone copping your HD if you fudge around with it.

You are right about asking for more trouble... But if HD is stolen then he gig is over, that is a very important piece of equipment. Thats what people hire us for, now think about the hard work you put into getting your music organized, why should someone else steal it from you and make things easier for themselves. its just my opinion. Thats why I would have at least some sort of security for that piece of equipment..

Password Protect doesn't prevent someone from stealing it.
I'm all for keeping your music files YOURS but I feel it's not worth the POSSIBLE trouble the program might cause.

Tape a mousetrap to it LoL
Josh218 8:05 PM - 13 September, 2010
Mousetrap? They might steal that too ....lolz not a bad idea thou...

i think the only way to know if it works or not is to try it... jus have backup music (like i always do; mp3 cds). I might not go the encryption route but just the password route. It seems like a more reliable way to go b/c it gets turned on when hd is ejected....

thanks alot guys
