It depends on who you're opening for. I usually shoot for songs that aren't played all the time, esp. songs the later DJ doesn't usually play.

Damn, I need to go back to school cause that post above ^ got my re-reading it a few times and still don't understand :(

Well, also, are you hip hop, house, top 40 remix, what's the club format?

I try to play song that you wouldnt play at peak time but sometimes you can always fit one or two in depending on the crowd that is there. Opening is keeping a vybz that people will stay in and warm up until peak time but you dont want to bore them so you gotta know when to turn up the energy depend on how long you are playing for

I do openings 3 nights a week (and full nights on 2 nights). I'm the only DJ in the club here that does video, which helps keep a level of early entertainment (sometimes it's like 50 zombies staring at the screens...).

As far as what I do, I like to dig. I like to play songs that other DJs don't play all the time. Like the later DJs don't play Duffle Bag Boy (Playaz Cirle). Or Louie Bag (Blood Raw). Get Crunked Up(Iconz). I also like to break new songs early as well (although the DJ after me is the radio mixshow DJ, so we sometimes drop the same brand new song at the same night, like the other night Dope Boy Swag came on the record pool and both of us played it in our sets.

I've talked to so many DJs in my time, and among all of them it seems to be a standard issue: Opening DJs don't try very hard. And then they wonder why people wait till 12 to come to the club. I don't see anything wrong with being your own crowd draw.

It takes a LOT of mental effort to really put 100% into playing for a small group of people at 10:30 at night but you just gotta take yourself out of the "crowd" and into the set. Think of yourself as a radio mixshow DJ, you don't have a crowd to look at. I remember going to a club one night that was dead at 1am. He wasn't even trying to do anything to keep the 10 or 15 people who were there entertained. Just crash track to track until the night was over to collect his check.

My tricks for a good opening set:

1. Play for girls. If you can get girls up and dancing you are setting up the night for a good party. Dont be afraid to play the "corney" beyonce lady gaga type tracks.

2. In the interest of not burning the headlining DJ (playing songs he was going to play later) I went back pulled all my hottest prime time songs from about two years ago and put them in my opening set crate. If people walk in and hear something that they know, like and havent heard in a while it gets them comfortable. They may not get up and dance but your playing in the part of the night where people are just drinking anyways so keep it light and keep it comfortable.
