Recording to quiet

dreamkast 9:43 PM - 8 March, 2007
So Ive been giving recording my records a go with my maudio soundcard and using things like audacity and cool edit, and without it peaking the recording comes out much quieter than the usual tracks on my computer, how can I get over this.

Are you recording in Stereo? You may need to adjust a few settings in Volume Control in XP.

posted in your other thread:

I used cooledit before.. way back when..

I remember I would rip my vinyl into the cooledit program and make sure nothing was peaking.

- [ I didnt have a piece of software that cleans pops and clicks before, but I do now. This is where I would use the pops/clicks removal software on the ripped vinyl track...eg. soundsoap, Waves plugins software,....] IF you dont have any audio cleaning software, just go to the next step.

- then, I would use the 'hard limiter' plugin (within Cooledit pro) on the recording to boost the volume on the waveform..(i think 'hard limiter' is under the 'effects' selection somewhere under the 'edit' option on the toolbar.
- then 'save selection' to 'wav' file.
- then encode 'wav' file to a 320k CBR 'quality 0' mp3 using 'razorlame'.
- then run mp3gain on the file to 94dB.
