it's not about being a dj its about making money. pauly d draws a crowd... a porn star will draw a crowd... here's an honest question to ask yourself...
If you owned a club and had the dollars to spend on getting a non local dj would you A: hire someone you know and love that the masses in your city really don't know and make maybe 10% more than a normal night OR B: hire a household name that may or may not suck ass and make a killing?
It's not about keeping it real it's about creating buzz and making money. Keep it real when your ass isn't on the line.
chances are it wasn't even her idea to even be a dj....

I fully understand the motivation for a nightclub to bring her in. But in my opinion (for what it's worth) I think it would have been much more appropriate to have her there in the capacity of something like "Special guest host and MC for the night", rather than a DJ.
Of course, I'm saying this without ever having heard her.
Either way, I don't have anything against Sasha Grey. I'm not trying to attack her. But I'm sure plenty of veteran DJs find it interesting (to say the least) that all these celebrities seem to be coming out of the woodwork and jumping on this trend deciding that they want to be a DJ (for more examples, see djfameorshame.com )
This would have never been possible back when everything was done on vinyl (or even CDJs for that matter – it never used to happen back then). I guess it's part of the price that we pay for such technological advancements like DVS systems. Maybe it's kind of a double-edged sword. Depends on your perspective, I suppose.

Technological advancements such as Serato are indeed a blessing and a curse. Sure, if we were still in the era of vinyl, where DJ's had to actually beat match on their own and carry around countless crates of vinyl, people like Sasha Grey wouldn't be DJing. Since we can't go back in time, we're all going to have to find ways to adapt. These Pete Wentz, Caroline D'Amore, Sasha Grey, Pauly D like celeb DJ's are only getting high profile gigs that pay a lot. Yeah, I think we should be pissed, but I think that everyone on the S.K.A.M. roster (skamartist.com), Deckstar (deckstar.com), etc
should be the ones who are really pissed. Those are the ones who have really put in work to get where they are, to get the gigs they have and have branded themselves. They're the ones that actually possess talent when it comes to mixing, scratching, interacting with a crowd and so forth.
I don't just dislike these celebrities turned DJ's, I dislike people who front like they're DJ's and take gigs from people with real skill and passion for DJing and music. Unfortunately, to keep getting paid to do what we love doing, we're going to have to step our game up when it comes to promotions, marketing, etc. It takes away from DJing, but it's the sad truth.
Damn you celebrity turned DJ's! lol
I got to get going right now, but I'll probably be back to elaborate more.

bottom line is no one cares who your host or mc is...
here's a few examples pick which you'd honestly go see...
Donald Trump MC or DJ
Jay Z MC or DJ
Beyonce MC or DJ
Jessica Alba MC or DJ
Pure honesty I would not pay to get in a club if any of them were the MC or host.... however there's a good chance I'd go just for the novelty of them being the dj. That's straight up honest... It would be funny, entertaining no matter what, and I'd get great pictures!

I meant it as, they're the ones that are really having the gigs taken away from them by celebrity turned DJ's. Just wanted to clear that up. :)

Well put, DJ FAME OR SHAME.
And yes, I understood exactly what you meant the first time. A long-time friend of mine is on the S.K.A.M. roster and my initial thought on this topic was similar to yours.
Additionally, I think that this sort of thing only serves to trivialize what we do as artists and performers. It's hard enough for many DJs to get the respect that they deserve.

Ya i really feel bad for the skam artists who have to wait another 15 or 20 minutes before their assistant gets another call from someone wanting to book them after a fake celeb DJ takes their gig........that must be a very stressful 15 minutes of wandering where your 3rd 10 to 20 grand gig of the week is comming from lol

I really do think youd do just as well paying someone like sasha an apperance fee and having them just hang out around the club. I think the same demographic would show up. Especially since the chance of bangin her or seeing her do some dumb shit is X10 with her in the crowd drinking and not up on stage or in a booth working

lmao thats cute.... you ever done any real traveling in this country? go to Charlotte NC... pretty decent nightlife. Now go to the area schools and malls and ask the people around the target age if they have heard of sasha, bad boy bill, steve aoki... etc etc etc etc etc etc... the answer is NO ask if they are going to such and such club on such and such night to see said "world renown dj" answer is probably going to be "who?" "oh i might go" THAT AIN'T PADDING NO ONES POCKET. the nightclub industry is all about the money PERIOD. the nightclub industry is all about style and hype PERIOD. the nightclub industry is ABSOLUTELY NOT about making dj's feel all warm and fuzzy. Having seen dj's like Enferno LIVE not on youtube straight kill at a club and sat and watched the GENERAL response from the people in the room his name his talent his pure ability to rock a party didnt make that club not one extra dollar. At the end of the day he is just a dj. A damn fucking good one but a dj none the less.... However I can PROMISE you that if you put on a flyer that Brad Pitt is djin females would pay $100 at the door just to walk in the place and have just as much fun. Why? because the music is loud and drinks are served....
one day when you realize that clubs are NOT owned by dj's but instead are owned by INVESTORS (most of the time) if not some random schmuck that "always wanted to buy a bar" then you'll understand that WE are expendable and EASILY replaced and WILL be replaced on any given occasion when something comes through with a more flashy and recognizable name....
14 years I been in the club game and in 14 years I've seen the same shit over and over again. You got 2 choices... sit on a computer and bitch about the latest idiot that got on OR keep doing wtf got you the work you got in the first place... I have went with option 2 my whole career and guess what? my bills are still paid and idiots are still getting on and making more than me.... WOW

and the Jay Z reference??? are you really using Jay Z for that example.... wow I honestly thought you were smarter than that. How long have you honestly been in this game? How long have you honestly been playing nightclub gigs?
Jay Z was in the business before he was 20 has either released or been featured in over 20 albums and has run not one but 2 record companies.... his MONEY came from MUSIC and in the past few years has used THOSE funds to invest in other ventures.... meanwhile your OTHER ventures has financed your HOBBY which had led you to making a small income off of music and talent. Congrats and more power to you seriously.
90% of every dollar I see comes from a set of turntables graciously given to me by club owners that get 90% of their money from people that could care less if it was me or another guy standing in the same place. This business is not about right or wrong it's about what's real and what will make a dollar versus what might make a dollar... LOL EXACTLY, its no different than when the jersey shore cast came here, or in previous years when some road rules or real world goons would come and do "guest appearances" It blew my mind because they would advertise that some jackass who was on the real world like 4 seasons ago would be at ___ club and id be walking downtown and see a line around the corner. Im like really your gonna stand in line for 30 minuts and drop a $20 cover to see mike the miz?? REALLY???? LOL @ Waldo posting his resume and entire list of assets all off one or two words from Bezzle.
All that shit doesn't make what he said any less true. If you would pay to see celebs Dj just because they're celebs, you could've invented the turntable but you are still part of the demographic AKA "problem". Whether it's demographic or problem I'll leave that up to you two...but you could play basketball with Kool Herc on Wednesdays, but in the context that Bezzle was speaking of.. it still doesn't change anything

Anyway on topic, a promoter acquaintance threw a Tera Patrick hang out party once, they did alright.. There are four major filming locations in North America, this city is one of them. Some very serious stars are not only out and about in the city on any given day, but a lot of them have homes here as well (even Prince was here for years) and people are so used to it that half the time they don't even spot said celeb as one of the crowd.
But there are also three things this city likes to do in terms of "celebrity", basketball players throwing their own parties/hosting other peoples parties (althrough the title of host is actually BS since they don't do anything but floss in VIP) rapper release parties and TMZ style "WTF are they famous for again?" affairs. Luckily the latter is last on the list. The celeb Djing thing isn't that big here since there is already a very established nightlife, but there is still a crowd for the celeb "hanging out" events. Usually promoters go that route instead since there is way too much else to do and celeb Dj's won't guaruntee you much if some EDM household name is next door. That's not to say there hasn't been a celeb "Dj" or two around here. Luckily the Paris Hilton type Dj's are such an embarrassment when they show up they're rarely invited back. This month is the international film festival so it's really the only time these idiots get any "deck time" and part of the time it's only because it's their own party.

I think the celeb game is doing the sam ething the DJ game is doiing, DVS is making it easier by the day for anyone to become a DJ, which saturates the market and brings the wage down. So as a DJ you have to distinguish yourself to keep your cut of the pie high and keep the good spots, you do this buy scratching, doin vids, bringing lighting ect.
With reality TV, youtube, TMZ, the internet ect there are more "stars" than ever so its in the "celebs" best interest (if their not a brad pitt angelina ect) to approach the venue by providing something extra for th emoney their getting, ie you get a dj and and apperance, you get the novelty act, the morbid curiosity, and you get 2 employees for one

I definitely understand that, especially about the overnight celebs for stupid shit. And people who don't go out to clubs regularily, or are from some small market where there's little else to do they'll flock to shit like that. But it makes little sense to bring in a TMZ Dj for double what they're asking for an appearance fee, in a market where PVD is on one corner, and Jazzy Jeff on the next. It's better to shoot Janelle from Big Brother a few grand to hang out rather than chance her being horrific on the decks and have people bounce to the other venues.

Thats not what im saying though, your completley correct there BUT if you have jazzy jeff on the corner I as an owner would try to get a celeb apperance because there are are many real DJs that can draw his crowd away from him. So im going for a different audience. Now that ive made the decession to go celeb i look at a list and see for $ i can get a b or c.....now a and b are hot but c is hot AND djs.....c gets the apperance.

I think the only exception to this rule in a large market in terms of "Dj" vs. "appearance"would be LA, and remember we're talking about the TMZ and B/C/D list celeb, not the A listers who are around the globe 24/7 working, just because every "celeb" from the reality wack job to the soap opera wannabe lives out there so there's no hassle getting them there, they're there already and promoters have countless other wannabes to choose from if the first choice gets too diva on them.
But where it's more of a production to get these clowns out in places where there is already stiff competition, it makes less sense to have them Dj if they'll hang out and draw the same amount of people for half the ticket.

I never disagreed. I knew what you were saying. I was just pointing out why celeb appearances are much bigger than the celeb Dj in the market that I'm in.

Well, you can say that she's moved on to legitimate acting now (although she hasn't really blown up in that area yet)

I can't tell what she's running on that MacBook Pro, but it's definitely not ScratchLive so I guess it's pretty much irrelevant.

Damn you celebrity turned DJ's! lol
Pauly D was a dj way before he became a celebrity after he became famous for being on the show thats when he started getting payed more and doing bigger gigs. I dont really see what the point of hating these celebrity djs people who should be hating on instead of these guys are the djs that just keep start djing and just do the same thing as everyone else play the same music and are just doing it to be cool and try to use it to get laid.
