Moving Mp3s to different folders (SSL Search)

check this out... currently i have about 12 different "subfolders" in my "Mp3's" directory for SSL. Now, i have a folder called "New Mp3s" for all the latest songs i got. Say i put some of those in crates and then i move the files to another folder since they are no longer "new" to me... they are gone and i cant have SSL search for the files that were moved. I wish there was a way for SSL to check for mp3s that have been moved into different directories. Anyone else think this is a good idea?

You can do it now :-) Use the "rescan ID3 tags" feature in the setup screen :-)
Are you using SSL version 1.3?

yes, im using public preview 1 for now.... (when was this implemented?)
so your saying if i move mp3s around to different folders and my crates dont find the the songs anymore, i just rescan mp3s and the crates wont see them as missing again, and they will work in my crates again?
Another thing is ... say i move an mp3 from a folder to another folder.. i hit rescan tags... will that automatically remove the mp3 in my database that was in the old folder? will it change the location of the file to the new folder as well? (as oppose to keeping it in both places and only one of the locations working)

i guess my other question is ... if i move mp3's to a totally new folder that i created, i assume i have to drag those files in SSL all over again right? and will those files in the new folder be back in my crates that i previously setup? (i know this is WAY confusing, im having a hard time trying to explain this in writing, sorry about that)

Correct. In my experience,,,if i move an mp3 to a different folder, you must drag it into the SSL crate you had or want it in also, rescanning the file in ssl will not pickup that it was moved to a different folder or location on your computer

Chita79, after you move files around, just drag the entire Mp3's directory into your Scratch LIVE library. After doing this, rescan tags, sort by status column, and delete the 'not-found' files. It's not exactly what you are after, but a lot easier than dragging individual files.
BriChi - use preview.

Nope, you'll have to drag the missing file back into the apropriate crate.

iTunes smart playlist can help you this way... though you will have to reimport the entire library each time you move files from a folder to another different one.
thats the way i do it!
but i would LOVE to see some kind of "synchronized SSL crates & folders" feature or "auto folder scanning and library importing"... pleeeeeeaseeee!!! :)

Yeah, can you guys implement a function so that once you move an mp3 to a different folder, the songs will be found again by SSL so that you don't have to reinsert the track into each crate that you have it in?
I have several sets of like 100 songs and I've been moving my songs around a lot so it takes me forever to individual replace each song that I moved. Thanks.

Has been suggested allready, I would also like to see this function (SSL could calculate a hash for each mp3 in its database and with its help find the mp3 if triggered by the user).

the only problem with using itunes smart playlist is that it messes with the bpm's. that is if you used mixmeister to add them to the 1d3 tags. that's why i can't use itunes at all. have to keep moving and re-finding files. very frustrating. just so you guys know i spoke with upper level engineers at apple that developed the itunes program for about 2.5 hours on the phone. they are trying to figure out that bpm problem. they denied it's existance for about 2 hours, but i finally convinced them it was a itunes problem. i'm waiting for them to get back to me. should be soon, but it did't sound promising.

Next time you can also tell them that iTunes doesn`t recognize its own mp3 encoder anymore :-) . (it says "encoded with: unknown")

BTW, this happens only on a Macbook Pro. I might remember that this didn`t happen with iTunes 6.04 on a Powerbook and shurely not with Windows.

I forgot with a Mac the Mixmeister-BPM issue is not just in smart lists - it`s with every file in the library.
It`s strange that this doesn`t happen with iTunes on Windows, though.

SSL,
please add some sort of depth to your programing for file path relocation.
This is a new field, and as studious as some of us are about our folder and crate structures, we will always find ways to improve them, as time goes on. We WILL NEED to relocate files sometimes.
Some advanced functionality for these tasks would be more than welcome.
We have already spent countless hours arranging our music. The task of restructuring file architecture and backups should be safe and relatively painless.
Respect.
