Yes this is easily done but i feel iTunes has a bug in it that will drive you nuts if you do this. I have always found that when iTunes cannot locate your external HD it puts the default "iTunes Music folder location" back to your startup disks home folder. Can you see how anoying that is?

iTunes>Preferences>General>"iTunes Music folder location">Change = the location on the new drive where you want the files. Now to copy the files over to that drive check off the "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library". Click "OK" to exit the preferences window. Next click on Advanced "Consolidate Library" (if you have a lot of music this will take a while!

I feel iTunes should just report back an error or say it can't find your music file(s) instead of making a change to your library. I hate changing Defualt iTunes music folder Location back. Speaking on iTunes bugs d:raf here is a Mac specific one. Did you know that you can drag a song stait out of iTunes and it will make a copy wherever you place it? Well, on iTunes (PC Version) you can drag multiple files and when you run accross 2 tracks with the same name Explorer/iTunes will ask you what you would like to do. If you try this on iTunes (mac) it wall cancel the transfer without ever asking you anyhting. That is a bug for sure. Finder/iTunes should ask if you want to overwrite, or not overwrite.

find your i-tunes music folder. also find your external drive... make a folder in the external drive. the easiest thing for you to do it to select all of your music in the itunes folder, and just drag them over to the new folder in your external drive. don't hastle with itunes finding the external drive. if your computer recognizes it you are fine. there is not even a reason to have itunes open to transfer the songs.

I reported Drag n' Drop - Finder bug to Apple. Not sure if they will bother doing anything about it. The first bug with the Defualt iTunes Library music folder is something I don't even want to get into with Apple because it is a matter of of opinion. Some people will think it should defualt back to the home folder and some will say it shouldn't.
