A REAL DJ WOULD NEVER USE SERATO

mixx it 1:48 AM - 27 February, 2007
WHAT A JOKE THESE GUYS ARE www.myspace.com

THESE GUYS ARE CLAIMING THAT A REAL DJ WOULDN'T USE SERATO AND
CHALLENGE ANY DJ. SINCE WHEN DID USING A SERATO MAKE DJING EASIER. OBVIOUSLY THESE GUYS EITHER CAN'T AFFORD IT OR CAN'T DJ TO BE BEGIN WITH.
FYI.... SERATO IS THE WAY OF THE FUTURE... THESE GUYS SHOULD GET WITH THE TIMES OR TAKE UP A NEW PROFESSION.
punosion 2:05 AM - 27 February, 2007
These people just need to get a recalibration in what a "DJ" is...just suggest a thorough reading of this:

given their shitty trendy-electro/house remix/mashup of Flock of Seagulls and their subsequent claim that it is "one of the best records you will ever hear" I wouldn't really put too much stock into their opinions.
BIG DJ PHAZE 4:13 AM - 27 February, 2007
Not all DJs are technically savoy.
I find most people that feel this way just can't afford to make the investment in Scratch LIVE and a laptop, or else lack the basic computer skills needed to operate ANY software program.

I've seen it with my own eyes, and usally my response is, "why have you not switched over to Serato Scratch LIVE".

They usually reply with the truth, "I don't know dick about computers".

their whole style is extra-hot wack garbage, and I would never waste my bandwidth downloading that shiz. I had to hit the mute button when i surfed to their mysp page.

oh, and I switched to serato and dont use my vinyl anymore. it hasnt gotten any easier, in fact, its gotten harder ( I JUST HAVE A SHIZLOAD MORE MUSIC NOW WHOO HOO!)

I adore vinyl - I switched to Serato begrudgingly - my partner is a record store owner and he's definitely been feeling the hit from the proliferation of digital dj solutions and I do believe that Serato is a large part of the reason that vinyl is in a sharp downswing... I fully intend on still buying vinyl 80% of the time and just ripping tunes I buy (mmm... fresh pressing vinyl rip).

That being said, I still think that guy is a huge douche.

well, I think it would be more relevant if he realized that Diplo uses Serato - much more of a hipster icon... Sacha's uses the word "progressive" without any irony is definitely a nono among hipster douchebags.

I wonder if they know how to beatmatch? I hear it's the hot new shit.

That Flock of Seagulls track is okay, I like the concept but it drones on and on.

The percussion line sounds suspiciously similar to High Caliber's "Shakedown" sped up a bit. Correct me if I am wrong. Where's the originality? I wonder if High Caliber is okay with that?

this kid that works for me started djing on serato, knew nothign about it b4 and started straight on serato. it annoys me becuase he stares at the waveforms on the screen instead of actually listening to the music and mixing. he has improved alot tho.thats about the only credit ill give to serato for making it easier. mixing is still mixing regardless, i still consider it to be an art.....

serato makes djing easier. sorry fellas. i was using vinyl for over ten years and then switched to serato. why do i think it makes it easier? first off. i used to have to carry atleast one crate of records to work.(40 pounds i don't know what that is in kilograms, but it's more than a laptop) at most 8 crates.(do the math, i did that 5 nights a week for dumb long) now after 2 years of djing with serato i've become a fat bastard, but i'm getting back in shape, whatever, that's neither here nor there. reason 2 why it makes djing easier. it took me years to get my tracks on vinyl. when i started using SSL, i copied my homie's hard drive. it took about an hour. reason 3. i used to have to remember where to drop the needle on the actual record when i wanted to do quick mixes. now i have cue points, when i press a button , viola, i'm right where i want to be. man , i could keep going on, but i think you get the point. now the disclaimer. don't get me wrong, i fukin' luv SSL... it's the best. Why? cause it makes my LIFE so much easier... last, i consider myself a real dj, i've put some serious time into this , it' my career. so real djs do use SSL.
dj_soo 11:03 AM - 28 February, 2007
the only reason i bought serato was so that i didn't have to bring 2-5 crates to every gig i played. I'd say it's making djing easier for me...
Daim 1:42 PM - 28 February, 2007
a real dj what never ever use the the phrase "real dj"

..doh :p
Daim 1:48 PM - 28 February, 2007
stop justifying for using serato and leave the conservative guys who lost their jobs to u bitch a bit.. now they dont have any other way left to express themeselves :-)
LightFighter 1:53 PM - 28 February, 2007
there are pro and cons for both

One I agree Serato is the way of the future...... anyone who gigs will see this while the investment to get the initial gear is pricey it should pay for it self pretty quick. One for turntables it expanded the capabilities being able to set loops and non skip scrathing and Keylock.... that alone is worth the investment

you will spend more time organizing your music with serato period. the end result is still the same You have to spin the records!!
The E Head 2:26 PM - 28 February, 2007
My 2 cents..........

Does SSL make djing easier IMO i would have to say yes but on.ly to a certain extent!

When i first got SSL i never used anything but absolute mode, when spinning like that it made no difference (As i am not a microwave dj and dont use the waveforms to beat match)

But for maybe the last month or 2 i have been using relitive mode (i know i was incredibly stupid to overlook this mode but thats for another thread) and since i have been using this and saw the potential i am fully converted!

But back on topic i would say it is easier to produce the same set on SSL as with vinyl, but and this is a big but!! Since i have been rocking relitive mode i have been able to mix in a way that to me was not possible with standard vinyl!

Therefore my sets are better and more complex thanks to SSL and not only that the crowd also appreciates it alot more!
Mr. $weetlife 2:56 PM - 28 February, 2007
Yeah, I don't understand some of the hate that relative mode gets! Makes no sense to me! I'm guilty too cuz when I first got SSL I had no desire to use relative mode at all. But now its my first choice.

I came from vinyl and transitioned to CDJ's and now SSL on Techs. Serato has made me an even better DJ. With my setups I always felt like something was missing, but now I finally feel that this is it! My permanent setup.

I guess in closing, as a DJ, SSL has the POTENTIAL to make your job a bit easier. However, you still have to possess the same things any successful DJ needs (at least what I think) a love of music, a love of people, a knack for song construction and patterns and a desire to entertain.

However, no matter how many electronic toys or widgets you have they all must adhere to the GIGO principle! SSL is no exception. Nuff said!

for everyone that says people who use serato aren't dj's and you have to spin "real" vinyl to be a DJ... you're lame... if you want to be orig than go play everything off 8-tracks, a reel-to-reel or get use to technology.

I guess this guy has changed his My Space info due to so many responses to his ignorance!!!
Wow if you were such a great DJ, you would stand by your own words. Obviously you cannot compare yourself to any other well known Dj regardless whether they are djing in clubs or in there bathroom the DJ's you are talking about have more experience then your 1 year experience.
Hanging out with DJs for the last 15 years doesn't make you a DJ maybe a wonna be but definitely not a DJ. I would suggest not worrying about making a mockery out of electronic music but worry about the DISGRACE you make of yourself and your poor producer who is talented and is getting a bad rap for associating himself with you.
P.S. $10 is better then playing for FREE like you are known to do so you have nerve talking about others.
Obviously someone is listening cause you keep responding to the hype.........
Jay Ru 6:53 PM - 1 March, 2007
everytime there is a break thru in dj technology (cds turntables, ableton, serato etc, etc) some ignorant eijit comes out with the stupid statement that real dj don't use (insert any of the examples i've given above) At the end of the day real dj's use one thing, thats music, it doesn't matter what equipment u use to deliever the music. All that matters is the music thats being played! that just my 2 cents on the matter.

LOL Yall are pissed because, we Canadians have more style and class, and better dj's plain and simple. That why we get your chick, money, and most of all GIGS. I know a lot of dj's from Canada fly down often to play at the bigger jams and partys....Simply cause your DJ's can't hack it(thats out of the promoters mouth, that live in florida). Same thing happend to me a while back. A promoter from NYC heard what I could do on the deck and he wanted to fly me down, Why ?? Same reason, couldn't find a DJ that could deliver it the way we can. So I suggets you stop bitching and get back to your room and keep practicing. Then maby someday you'll measure up to one of our average DJ's.

I get a lot of Bigger named dj's come thru my radio show when they come to Canada. ( Such as Black Kat, Bass Odessy, and next week i'm getting Mighty Crowm from Japan). They all have walked away with nuttin' but love.

Hi All - I'm a newbie around here... I was just reading through the forums seeing what's happening and came across this and thought I should contribute my 2 cents.

Wow. There are some emotional people here. Personally, I use it all 1200's, 1000's and serato. While I'm glad to see you all have passion for what you use, wow. I think if these guys think lowly of serato, that's their right to. Personally, I like it and think it adds to my nights. But, if others aren't I'll let them get all riled up about it... no big deal.

From the sounds of it too, these Angry guys are messin' with us. They are probably laughing their asses off at how worked up everyone is getting. These kind of people eat that up. Check out their site now, it's talking about some Fisher Price record player... haha... I think I had one of those when I was a kid. That would be great to show up at a club with one of those!

In the meantime too, look at all the attention their site has gotten, more hits, more plays. Like Eminem said once: Any publicity is good publicity. And we're all giving these guys exactly what they want.

So, wrapping things up, it's too bad Serato got dissed in the process, but good on these guys for playing right into our hands. If they read this (which from the sounds of it they do), I actually really dig your Flock track. I heard it on XM back in January then got it on Promo Only shortly after...

Peace out.

I believe most of the DJ's on this forum have tons of residencies and for those who don't they are probably on the production side of DJ'ing looking forward to blowing Danger Mouse, etc out of the water....

lol what a joke!

only reason i use serato live is because i mix oldskool
and most of the best records are either rare or to expensive
i cant aford to be spending £80 - £500 on a single record !!
thats just crazy

...or they are working but won't use Serato even though they have severe back pain from carrying all those crates of vinyl because they don't want to be seen as fake DJs :)

ummm...yeah...of course, when i said "bitter djs are the ones that aren't working" i did mean those "fags" who were hating on serato.

Almost every dj that i've met that hate on serato are usually the ones that aren't working...that's why i said that j_static.

Maybe they hate on serato cause they ain't working...therefore, cannot afford it. Someone should send them a link and let these guys know they're getting dissed!
Dadysev 9:17 AM - 5 March, 2007
Serato is a great tool for DJ's and a first step into the future of DJ'ing. For some of us, the music we play hasn't come on vinyl in years, and now we get special remixes straight from the studios in MP3, or WMA format which will never make it to CD anyway, much less vinyl!
I love this tool, and its taking over the world! I just can't wait to see whats next.
Keep in mind that the media music is recorded on is getting smaller and smaller, which means the interfaces we play it back on are going to change also. As long as I can still use my 12's to manipulate the music I'm happier than a fly on a pile of $#@t!!!!!!!
Pete Moss 11:13 PM - 5 March, 2007
I don't know about anyone else, but I enjoy the extra time playing with my mix; because I'm not looking for the next record, not sure of where it is. And if I have more time for the mix, I think that makes Serato better.

I agree! With the music I'm playing speed can make a nice mix, and the ability to pull up loops when I'm on air on radio or internet radio, helps when the MC takes live calls or has some promo's to make.

Serato, much like any good technology, can be abused and used in a matter not intended by its creators.
Dadysev 12:53 AM - 6 March, 2007
It can also be used to create masterpiece's in a matter not intended by its creators.
brett rock 1:35 AM - 6 March, 2007
to me, serato is simply another way to the same destination. however, its not a replacement, its another tool to be assimilated into what is already there.

my advice to anyone would be to learn as much as possible about anything and everything, digital to analogue. take it all in because it will only make you better. i just acquired ableton and all im doing is raeding tutorials for it. will i dj with it? i will when i know how. why not include that along everything else?

i didnt always think of it like, that but im coming around. cheers to all of it.

So I travel around North America and the Caribbean to DJ. I guess I should hit you up to help me ship 8 crates of records on the plane everytime ? Oh ya and and i should get my own record press for all the new music I get direct from producers and studios who haven't pressed records in over 10 years ? What is a fake Dj such as myself to do whos been in the business for 30 years + to do??

I adore vinyl - I switched to Serato begrudgingly - my partner is a record store owner and he's definitely been feeling the hit from the proliferation of digital dj solutions and I do believe that Serato is a large part of the reason that vinyl is in a sharp downswing... I fully intend on still buying vinyl 80% of the time and just ripping tunes I buy (mmm... fresh pressing vinyl rip).

That being said, I still think that guy is a huge douche.

Makes me laugh. Almost all the music is produced digitally. So we should take that digitally image and put it on an analog medium? That's like taking your digital camera photo and putting it on film??? That's just ass backwards! We have to move with the times.

Technically this thread is 7 years old, so the correct "time warp" calculation is 3yrs.

Threads (arguments) like this can never be laid to rest. Peeps will be squabbling over analog vs. digital + turntable vs. controller, etc.. for the rest of our lives.

Trill
An adjective used in hip-hop culture to describe someone who is considered to be well respected, coming from a combination of the words "true" and "real".
